UNLV Arroyo fired

Recommended Posts

The one major change on the LV landscape in regards to interest in UNLV football has been the Raiders coming to town. Could be someone thinking that one successful program brings value to the other? The same person/people might want to support us in our push to a P5 bid also? Money for a quality coaching staff would be step #1.

Again, Davis or a group put together by Davis?

Personally, if we hire Gary Patterson or some other legitimate HC who is looking at a 3-5 million a year That means we’re going P5, heading to the PAC12. I don’t see a booster out there that wants to waste that kind of dough.

That SDSU leak a month ago wasn’t supposed to leak out before the ucla decision.  Obviously the PAC isn’t going to be stuck at 11.

I'm extremely dubious of a UNLV invite.

I do think it makes sense from a TV market perspective. Coupled with it being Vegas, it seems a shrewd move. Sam Diego and Vegas are the biggest Western TV markets left in the West. Without El Lay, they are necessary.

However, their lack of FB history and lack of Academic standing make it a no-go for the PAC.

UNLV is actually closer as an academic institution than they are in athletics.

If boosters want to get a coach, they will pay. If they don’t, they won’t.  It really just comes down to the boosters. I remember when SMU bought June Jones. I know coaches made less then, but the process was the same and SMU didn’t have any Power 5 hopes. They were just wanting somebody to get them going in the right direction. I wish that was important to some UNLV alum, just to get the Rebels going in the right direction.

Raiders and Rebels...which team is the successful one exactly?

UAB has now hired a HS coach as well.

North Texas also hired one, Todd Dodge. Dodge's record was right up UNLV's alley:

Year Team Overall Conference Standing Bowl/playoffs
North Texas Mean Green (Sun Belt Conference) (2007–2010)
2007 North Texas 2–10 1–6 7th
2008 North Texas 1–11 0–7 8th
2009 North Texas 2–10 1–7 8th
2010 North Texas 1–6[n 1] 1–3[n 1] 8th
North Texas: 6–37 3–23
Total: 6–37

I would hope any moves by UNLV were with a nod to being looked at by a P5 -- Not sure if or why the Raiders would be involved or care that much.........but maybe there's boosters out there with an eye to get UNLV in P5 radar especially with the recent PAC12/10 situation

PAc might not have the old option to be snooty on academic standing...........Plus UNLV of 2022 & forward isn't the academic low bar of UNLV 1975-2010 --- THere's been major strides at UNLV in upping the academic game

Plus with the LV biz (think casino & tourism) they would most likely get behind any UNLV to the PAC movements & be a full partner with the PAC, even more so than they already part partners with the PAC - PAC has bowl & BB tournaments in LV for a reason ......toss UNLV into that mix is just icing on the cake

I think it would be epic if UNLV hired Jay Norvell away from Colorado State.

I don’t think any CSU fan would be that upset

Actually I doubt the Raiders hurt UNLV FB all that much - Raiders main fan base is spread out across a wide region, mostly northern & southern California. I'd go so far as saying the Raiders don't have the majority of LV area as Raider fans........most still cheer for their old teams ........and driving around, you don't see near the Raider gear compared to the VGK

The above also applies to UNLV as most transplants still follow their old home state/town college programs & when those P5 schools, then they see UNLV & the MWC as small time

UNLV might & should have a growing local alumni base which is a positive because back in the 1970's to 1990's most big UNLV boosters where just local mucky muck's who made a $$ and UNLV BB was the only sports show in town....those "boosters" weren't alumni & most didn't send their kids to UNLV ( The Fertitta's are all U$C Alums), UNLV was just a local fad & the tourism people of that era used UNLV BB as a marketing tool to southern Cal & to get the "Vegas" name out there.

A lot has changed locally over the last 30+ years some good and some bad for UNLV sports..........Once the nationally known BB team was the only show in town, now a limping BB program is playing in the shadow of the NFL & NHL, the old guard who "built UNLV BB" have died off.... the local population has grown from 500,000 to 2,300,000 with most moving in from somewhere else .................but over the last 30-45 years the academic side of UNLV has gone from a 4 year community college to a research university with major programs added and new one being added every year so the old academic argument is losing credence.

But in the end, if UNLV is G5 that alone will cap UNLV FB ........going to take UNLV being a P5 to give FB any chance for any decent market saturation ........BB has the luxury of still being able to get some national notoriety even in the MWC & winning will bring those fans back faster than FB.

Get UNLV FB in a P5, especially the PAC where it's more regional to LV & UNLV FB attendance will increase instantly just because more will view it as better competition & visiting fans fill a lot of seats ..........When the Denver Broncos played here against the Raiders the crowd was at least 40% Denver fans

Wouldn’t the Big 10 be better than the PAC 12 for UNLV since it has the LA teams?

B10 isn't coming for UNLV

UNLV's only shot at one of the current P5's is the PAC or B12 ..........geographically UNLV & SDSU fill a close gap that UCLA & USC left, so those two make sense in that regard.

Sure without UCLA & USC as conference mates hits, but if UNLV does end up in the PAC, I'd wager you might see a UCLA/USC vs UNLV be scheduled because of the proximity of the fan bases

B12 could be a fit if the B12 wants to add more out west to give BYU some short trips & regional games.

All depends on what other PAC dominos fall (if any).........Oregon & Washington or ASU & Arizona -- If either of those pairs get poached UO/UW to the B10 and/or UA/ASU to the B12 then the PAC is down to P5 light and would have to grab SDSU, UNLV, BSU & maybe UNR just to survive .......The B12 is adding some suspect schools and the PAC might have to do the same if the 4 above leave the PAC - Like the B12, the PAC would be 2nd tier P5 while the B10 & SEC rule the roost

Larry Scott lacked vision.  UCLA and USC would still be in the PAC-12 if he didn’t spend YEARS f-cking up the relationship with them.

T-minus 4 hours! 😊

I’ve been to UNLV men’s basketball games and overheard people say they were here on vacation.

Like I said before, T-minus 4 hours. 😊

That's a big plus UNLV BB & FB have.......with the large FB stadium & large BB arena...........UNLV should be able to attract some solid opponents that travel well

If BYU can host games here then UNLV can also if they up their programs to a consistent level of decency ---- People will travel here & UNLV FB proved that awhile back with the Wisconsin FB games
