No search TEAM might be fine but it's stupid not to hire a search FIRM. For about a paltry 50 grand you can get some very worthwhile info.

Unless you already have your guy picked.

Maybe they already have their guy.

I have only an incomplete opinion of this move until the new name is announced.

Til then not sure if stupid or not.

To UNLV fans, the announcement of hiring a search firm has always been the death knell for our HC aspirations. Nothing says "we dont know wtf we're doing" like a searchfirm.

You already know who the BIG NAME out there are. Either get a big name, or stop trying. Firing Arroyo after Year 3 sent a message: we want to win in 2023, not be put on another 3-5 year fking rebuild.

Arroyo took over in 2020 after UNLV football went 5-7 in 2017', 4-8 in 2018', and 4-8 in 2019....then went 0-6 in 2020, 2-10 in 2021, and now some people here are pretending like reverting back to 5-7 in 2022 is progress with the Fertitta Football Complex and Allegiant Stadium at your disposal when the Bishop Gorman's own TONY SANCHEZ was winning more games in Sam Boyd Stadium and sharing weight/training facilities with the fuggin' soccer team in the dumpy old Lied Athletic Complex.

To again refer to Chuck Long, 18 years ago SDSU's AD hired Chuck Neinas' firm to vet candidates. SDSU paid Neinas something like $30K. It wasn't known at the time who Neinas recommended but it didn't matter because SDSU's idiot AD already had HIS guy picked because he and Chuck had worked together at Kansas State. About six months after Chuck was announced as the choice, it leaked out that Neinas had recommended a young Jimbo Fisher who was hired by Florida State three years later.

From 20 years of following college sports closely I'll tell you this. A surprising number of athletic directors are little more than paper pushing educators who have come up the ranks. People like that can hire rowing coaches because those sports don't matter. However, they shouldn't be trusted to hire head football coaches. Neinas had been commissioner of the old Big Eight Conference for about a decade and so knew a ton of bigshots. In contrast, SDSU's AD was an idiot with a law degree from Minnesota who had worked there and Kansas State as an underling and knew nobody important that he might have gotten great inside info from. Checking Harper's bio, he sure seems to be that same kind of AD.

Well, it's apparent that I know far more about this stuff than most of you Rebels and I'm by no means unique on this board in that regard.

Search firms recommended TJ Otzelberger and Marcus Arroyo. So your points on maybe missing an unknown up and comer is lost on UNLV fans.

We have had our own issues here, and this idiot hired Arroyo using a firm and TJ Otzelberger using the same firm.

We'd rather have an obvious big name, cant miss, proven commodity coach and that list isn't that long.

Especially if they did this firing the right way by having a deal on the back burner with the new hire before swinging the ax on the current coach.

No. Questionable suggests the decision might actually have some merit.

UNLV could have the most effed up athletic department in the country.

The only fear I can think of is clueless out of state people not into sports confusing us with UNLV.

What out of state people are clueless about is reno's existence.

We only know about you due to the smell from southbound wind gusts.

Harper was a starting DB for Kansas State for 4 years. He was Director of Football Operations for Arizona for 8 years. He understands football. Maybe he gets the hire right and maybe he doesn't. But he knows the game and has plenty of contacts.

This is exactly right. Sanchez was better without all the tools we have now in a MWC that was much better! Arroyo nuked the team when he got here and started 2-16. It's not progress when 3 years after you took the job you are in the exact same place in a league that is worse than when you started.
