I don't understand why BYU fans have a hard time grasping why former conference mates would be upset with them regarding the project. BYU was looking out for its own best interests. BYU and USU worked together to bring a few MW schools to the WAC where BYU could park their Olys + a scheduling agreement for football and have the ESPN TV deal they lacked in the MW. This would mean a weakening  or destruction of the MW- a conference they were in at the time and had been in for quite some time. Poaching teams from the MW for this new conference felt like betrayal to the other members of the MW. Anything here that's not well founded or controversial?

OK, that doesn’t support any of the popular claims here about “The Project” - nowhere states in the article an active plan to bring MWC schools with them to the WAC just speculated some would follow.  Heaven forbid a program look out for its own best interest,  have you even followed college sports the last 20 years?

What are the popular claims? The previous post is all I'm claiming. Namely:

  • BYU and USU tried to recruit certain members of the MW to the WAC so BYU could park Olys there
  • The plan blew up when Nevada and Fresno decided not to go along with the project (after they agreed to do so) and bolted to the MW
  • Conference mates now view BYU as school non grata for what they felt was a betrayal in trying to steal members from the MW and effectively blow up the conference

Which claims are you referring to?

There are only two things I can't stand in this world: people who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch.

I remember the reports at the time of Benson casually meeting with the UNLV (IIRC) AD who was a long time friend and associate and he floated the idea of them joining the WAC.  The normal crybaby crew spun that as BYU actively recruiting UNLV/SDSU to join them in the WAC despite no mention of BYU in any report.  That was the “proof” they came up with.  The whole rewrite of “The Project” on this board to be actively driven by BYU was one of the most hilariously stupid things I witnessed in my almost 20 years here.

the project was designed to screw Boise State, by Utah State

Utah State wanted to be in a conference with BYU

BYU needed a home for basketball so it could go independent

Wyoming was not mentioned in the emails, only that they were glad to screw over Boise State.

here are the emails after doing a google search

No they didn’t. You guys wouldnt take BYU’s tv issues seriously, so they left and it worked out perfectly bc now we’re in the B12. Grow up

My recollection is that Craig Thompson killed the WAC in an (unsuccessful) attempt to retain BYU, bringing Nevada and Fresno State into the fold, and eventually Utah State and San Jose State, too.

Best decision he ever made was to 86 YBU

Worst decision he ever made was to not invite Boise state in 2003 when they had the chance.

Nobody has ever provided a shred of evidence of the MWCBoard version of “The Project”.  It’s a cute story though…

Wasn't their an email uncovered that showed the Utah State president had less than good things to say about it after the Thompson blew up the deal.

Super duper mean post. I think the B12 will as well. There's something you and others here who hate BYU have in common. It's frankly a little strange how much contempt you have for BYU, yet don't place a shred of blame on anyone else who participated in the project who stuck around. Sorry BYU took a better opportunity for themselves that resulted in a more stable and lucrative situation going forward for them. I'm still waiting for you to provide some actual evidence about the project, and wondering why you don't hate USU for spearheading it.

Dude we kicked yer asses out over ten years ago. Its time to go now . Why are you still here,.

byu was screwed after the project failed with and the WAC collapsed because they couldn't schedule enough games

then Boise State, Utah State and San Diego State all agreed to schedule annual games against BYU.  I don't know why.  Those are the 3 best football schools in the MWC.

if that didn't happen, I think BYU would have had to schedule Conference USA

Regardless when Boise State builds its new stadium they will probably be a top choice for the Big 12.   The Boise vs TCU game was fun.

It would be awesome if Boise State gets a good coach again.   Brian Harsen might be available soon.

But we will have to see what happens to the PAC10 first.

That game in 2011 in Boise was heartbreaking.

I am sure you guys felt the same way in the 2010 Fiesta Bowl.

Lot of great games between our schools.

Don’t forget about Karl….he was still super pissed about the airport meeting and would do anything he could to kneecap the MWC.

Yeah, so screwed.  The WCC proved to be an adequate home for Olympic sports and Independence afforded BYU an opportunity at way more $$$ and build its brand leading up to a BigXII invite.  Doesn’t exactly sound screwed to me at all.

Know what isn’t included in ANY of that paper trail?   Anything about recruiting other MWC members to join BYU in the WAC, and certainly nothing about BYU leading any mythical recruiting effort.

Folks cry about BYU’s fiduciary responsibility and stabbing conference members in the back.  Go back and reread what Fresno St and Nevada did to their conference mates, but that was all upstanding behavior for the the crybabies on this board.  It’s only bad when BYU acts in its best interests.  Hypocrites!
