Palo Alto is beautiful.  Incredibly nice.  Its like saying Beverly Hills and Malibu are shit because they are in LA.

Never been to Malibu, but one of the issues I have with LA is that you can be in a nice neighborhood and within a few blocks you aren't. San Diego is a much nicer city and it isn't close.

Somewhere Lobolast is responding as such at the mere mention or thought of a “State” Conference…

Penn State and Florida should definitely be tier 1. They are their town.

So is Illinois (Champaign).  Doesn't make it  nice though. It's pretty much a ditch, filled with gas station mini marts.

Everyone has an opinion and that’s cool. But I work in Mtn. View and have spent a lot of time in Palo Alto/Cal and surrounding areas and the wealth is mind blogging. Now, I wouldn’t live there just because of how congested it is but to say it’s not nice is not based on realty. It’s based on the fact that you went to a small city university and it’s different.

MWCboarding!! 😂

You are likely correct. Because the original poster talked abou Ivy League Schools, I was referring to them. I've also read and seen photos of the neighborhoods surrounding Duke and Penn specifically.

Things might have changed in the last ten years, but white flight and urban sprawl were the reasons they looked more like Central Ogden than esteemed University neighborhoods

Utah becoming an AAU school after joining the Pac 12 is a great model which Hawaii, New Mexico, and Nevada can emulate.  The big deal about the AAU is the members usually obtain more than half of over all research funding and that is where the money is in academics, not teaching undergraduates.

However, the 66 member AAU is not the most exclusive group in college football's division I, rather the 48 federal land grant institutions are.   Of the 130 universities that play division I football, there are 47 AAU members that play (39 FBS, 12 FCS ).  All of the 48 land grant institutions play division I football and 39 play FBS.  Only 15 land grant institutions are AAU members; Cornell is the only land grant AAU school that plays FCS.

20 land grant institutions play in the Big Ten and SEC.  Nebraska is a land grant institution even if it's not in the AAU.

The mountain west has five land grant institutions (Colorado State, Hawai'i, Nevada, Utah State, and Wyoming), which is more than the four in the Big 12 and Pac 12, and the three in the ACC.   Yes that is correct the Mountain West has the third highest number of land grant institutions, ahead of the Big 12 and the Pac 12, in FBS football.

Both Washington State and Oregon State are land grant institutions and every land grant is a significant academic institution.  The SEC consists of a majority of land grant institutions that aren't in the AAU so there is every indication that a primarily land grant university can compete at the highest level of college football.

Ideally Wazzou and OSU decide that a Division i FBS conference with a core of land grant institutions is a great place to be with respect to playing college football at the highest level.

What advantages are provided being a Land Grant Institute than a mere property owner like SDSU ?

They might be stuck with a large bill and uncertain how to pay it in the near future.

The remaining PAC getting a low ball offer tells me the New12 will as well. TV partners just don't see value in Schools not located in or near Big TV markets.

Now, the ACC may be the king of the Little 3, despite the perceived disadvantages of having their GOR as far out as 2036, it does provide the Conference with Membership stability for the next 12-15 years. Something every other Conference lacks.

Under the current TV and Bowl Deals, they are currently at the bottom of the payola barrel. Now with the PAC being worth far less and certainly the New12 as well.,..........

Guess who the clear #3 Conference is ?

the Pac12 needs to stay togethor, the Pac12 by far has the nicest locations

I don't think USC and UCLA even want Washington or Oregon to join the Big Ten because it will steal their recruiting.

this is why I continue to believe John Wilner that the conference will stay togethor and add San Diego St. and one other, probably SMU which also has a nice lcoation

it is nuts thinking that college kids will want to travel so far while being students.   keep the geography and the tradition.

If I was an Oregon St fan I would hoping for the Pac sticking together...   But lately I've been thinking what happens if the Big10 decides to just take all of the California Pac schools and call it a day.  That would get the Governor off UCLA's back and create a nice pod California base to decrease travel.  Then what would be next for the Pac?

Mostly it's a collaboration thing.  Kind of like a different version of AAU.  Land Grants focus a lot on ag research and will collaborate a lot within that community, and it's not minor research.  Beyond simple genetics, etc., a lot of it spills over into things like biomedical sciences.  There typically is a higher level of state support as well, although that has been waning over the years.  Mostly a lot of Tier 1 research, just not space shuttle stuff.  CSU for example does a lot of cancer research, T-Cell research, etc., they just study it in four legged critters instead of two legged.  Important stuff that translates.  Being a land grant gives them the advantage of being part of a club (like AAU) of like minded institutions and helps them increase their overall research budget.  They are also tasked with taking a higher level of "average qualifiers" on an undergrad basis if that makes any sense.  Still, you'd probably be surprised at what the land grant institutions take in for research dollars, and what they do with it.

Sooo, that won't happen.  The B1G is picking and choosing.  They're trying to build their version of an 'elite' conference which naturally results in the exclusion of most members of the other conferences.

Yeah, the B10 isn’t stupid. They hold all the cards with the SEC. No hurry needed when you sit in the catbird seat. They can pick and pull when they see fit.

Don't know if it will or not, but they both likely would take less to get their foot in the Big10 and both of them are 2 best academic institutions in the Nation.   The Big10 could say we will only give you $50 million for the next 5 years and then you will get a full share or what ever....   Both schools would jump at that offer and the Big10 would have all of the P5 schools in California.   That would give Big10 4 schools for that late night window.

Maybe?? To me that’s as good as any conference. Add the Montana schools, and UC Davis and Cal Poly and call it a day. The realty is no schools not in the big 3 are wanted or valued at a level that lets them compete with those programs who are. It’s delaying of the inevitable. So your second tier or third tier? You’re still looking in from the outside.

So, generally speaking, I agree with where you're headed.  I actually heard a version of that on a podcast with our AD today regarding a big split coming.  I say be proactive.  Form the conferences that make sense, with the rules that make sense.  Why would a K-State, etc. complain about that.  If the P2 came calling, you can always leave, but why wait around for a couple of conferences to make the decision for you?  Let's just move forward in the direction that we're being forced to and take advantage of the opportunity to set our own standards.  Call it surrender if you want, but I think a better level of amateur athletics can be built if those of us destined to be relegated to it, get to design it.
