I still have memory of Jerry Jeff c.1981 playing Sun Valley and me and a buncha cowboys I knew were all singing louder than fvck out of tune to the chorus spelling out M-O-T-H-E-R w/the back chant of “so what, so what…”.  I miss the ‘80s.

This morning it’s Larry McMurty’s (Lonesome Dove author) boy James on the Spotify.  I’ve never seen James live, but with some old favs now dead, I’ll try to catch him next go ‘round.  Like his dad, he can paint with words:

He puts on a great show.  Would highly recommend you going.  Painting with words is absolutely correct.  I really enjoy his Live in Aught Three album.

I haven't gotten a chance to really dig into that one yet but it is on the list.

It’s exactly what a great rap album should be. Part egomaniacal self-promotion part “f*ck you whitey” and part brilliant meditation on the era in which it was released.

The title track to last year’s album (Canola Fields) is one of my favs.  I’ve listened to James for a few decades now, but just intermittently.  I’m digging a bit more into his older stuff.

Bought this on vinyl, love it!  He plays the Cowboy Saloon every two or three years so he is about due.
