Well, this is quite the opposite in actuality...in terms of the good guy with a gun myth. An FBI active shooter study released in 2014 that studied 14 years worth of data proved it. The bullet points were as follows:

-160 events that qualified in populated areas from 2000 to 2013

-486 people killed, 557 wounded

-21 incidents ended at the hands of unarmed individuals, including 2 where off duty officers assisted

-45 incidents ended in law enforcement engaging in gunfire, where in 21 of those 45 incidents 9 officers were killed and 28 wounded

-5 incidents ended after an armed non law enforcement citizen engaged the shooter

I'd still rather have people with guns engage a shooter than unarmed citizens.

It sure hasn't killed multiple GOP careers for outbursts and interruptions

Maybe not.

What's the GOP equivalent of what that POS did?

Planning is an exercise of power, and in a modern state much real power is suffused with boredom. The agents of planning are usually boring; the planning process is boring; the implementation of plans is always boring. In a democracy boredom works for bureaucracies and corporations as smell works for skunk. It keeps danger away. Power does not have to be exercised behind the scenes. It can be open. The audience is asleep. The modern world is forged amidst our inattention.

I mean. Abbott and Patrick have highly politicized speeches after shouting Beto down. Hell, Patrick even implied that Beto was “evil” in his.

it’s just hilarious that they didn’t want “politics” to be involved while continually invoking their own politics.

If they did after beto made his idiot move, they deserve a pass.

I know, right? Too many books to choose from. Good thing we're doing something about that!!!

Yeah, banning books is dumb. We certainly are fond of it in Idaho though

That’s exactly what the GOP wants. They want to take their kids out of public schools, along with their funding, so they can put them wherever they want.

My twins go to a charter school in a different county. They were eligible when we got them in because we lived there at the time, and now it’s expanded to the surrounding counties. That said though, we still pay school district taxes here where we live and I wouldn’t be looking to take that money out of the local district given the opportunity. My kids are there because it’s a top five school in the state, and equidistant between us and their dad.

A strong public education system is really important for our society as a whole.

It is. And it is under attack. However I wouldn't put it all on the GOP. We are solidly blue and the union has completely screwed our District. Funding gets spent on a bloated Admin and the union has done nothing to improve the pay or working conditions for teachers. They are complicit with the powers, which do not have the interest of teachers in mind. They hold hands while everyone suffers.

I see it as an inevitability that education will be completely class based within a decade. It will become day care / indoctrination camp for the working poor while the middle (if they still exist) home schools and the wealthy private schools.

There will continue to be a re-education campaign for the working poor. But mostly it will be based on knowing their place, which benefits the power in both teams. This is because both money and power are consolidating and while there are subtle philosophical differences, power protects power. It is not a political debate but a classist one. I see us heading towards circa early 1800's educational system, with the change of perpetuating the working poor class via public education. Where the purpose is to keep the poor parents working and their children indoctrinated to taking their place, while the elite get private school and the few lucky in the middle get home school in the apprenticeship tradition.

Maybe all that is fatalistic. I hope it is, but I see what was old being new again. Maybe it is actually our default position and we've been living an abnormality believing it to be progress?

To take this to the right wing argument… shouldn’t parents have the right to decide whether or not they want their kid’s teacher packing heat?

Of course they should.  The teachers would also have to be willing and well trained.

It's probably not practical in many or most areas.  If it's a viable option in some schools, and the parents want it, why not?

It would suck to be a PTA member and even have to discuss it.

Governor Hochul had a press conference after the shooting in Buffalo....Governor Polis had a press conference after the Boulder shooting....Governor Northam had a press conference after the Virginia Beach shootings. It's standard practice and to be honest, the optics of a governor NOT having one after a shooting would be pretty bad.

A press conference.

Not giving the daily briefing.

Not standard practice.

In the beginning the Universe was created.
This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

Yeah, but the point is to have these incidents reduced by legislation addressing root causes rather than symptoms so that there are less situations to eventually respond to. Then have those "people with guns" actually have the adequate training required(which is like a crazy amount of training) to respond properly.

More people to respond with guns to more active shooters isn't really a solution. It's just a cyclical continuation of a worsening problem meant to stifle dissent while politicians pad their campaign coffers with money from one of the largest lobbies.

... for convenience.
