SJSU continues it's march towards a NCAA championship in women's golf!

San Jose State finished in seventh place after 4 rounds at the NCAA championships in women's golf and has qualified for match play to determine the NCAA champion.  Fifth ranked SJSU will face off against second ranked Oregon in the morning match with the winner advancing to play the winner of Texas A&M and Florida State in the afternoon.  The winner of the afternoon match plays for the NCAA title on Wednesday in the match play format.  That's a potential 36 holes of golf in one day after playing 4 grueling rounds with some extreme heat and wind during the past four days.  The teams that survive this schedule are to be commended.  The announcers on The Golf Channel commented after the round today that the three best teams are Stanford, Oregon, and San Jose State (Teams 1A, !B, and 1C) and it was too bad that Oregon and SJSU had to play in the quarterfinal instead of the semi-final.  Stanford is seeded #! but no #1 seed has won the title since match play started in 2015.  Natasha Andrea Oon finished in second place in the individual competition, 3 shots behind Rose Zhang of Stanford. Oon's birdie on the 18th hole helped secure SJSU's spot in the match play event.  The matches will be televised on The Golf Channel on Tuesday and Wednesday.  GO SPARTANS!

PS: It's a disgrace that the MWC official website has not had one story posted on it's website on SJSU battling for a National Championship since the tournament started.

Both Oregon and San Jose State played extremely well in the match play event at the NCAA tournament but unfortunately for SJSU, Oregon went on a birdie fest.  We played well but ran into a buzz saw in Oregon.  Congrats to Oregon.  I am proud of my school for representing SJSU so well all season long.  Winning the MWC title, a NCAA Regional championship, qualifying to the match play portion (one of only 8 schools remaining to compete for the NCAA title) and for being the only G5 school out of the 24 schools that qualified for the NCAA tournament.  In addition, our best player, Natasha Andrea Oon was ranked fourth nationally as an individual in the college rankings, won the MWC tournament individual title, won the individual title in the NCAA Regional tourney and finished second as an individual at the NCAA tournament behind #1 ranked and top ranked amateur in the world Rose Zhang.  Yesterday, Oon was leading her match play opponent by two holes when Oregon clinched their team victory against us.  Oon played like a champion all year long and she earned being named a finalist for the Annika Award for female golfer of the year (the equivalent of the football Heisman).  Congrats to SJSU for a job well done and for representing the conference well.
