Well, that was quick. The devil is in the details of course. I would like to see UH continue annual games with Fresno State, San Jose State and UNLV, at minimum. If we can get a fourth protected rival I would like it to be San Diego State.

The Paniolo Trophy game with Wyoming is a nice tradition but I don't think it warrants an annual meeting.

Think that will be hard if they base it on quads.

Boise St, Nevada, Hawaii and Fresno St in a pod together will bring back some good memories of the WAC.

Why.  Whom do you think you will be missing?

If they stay at 8 games it will be a 3 5 5.   If they go to 9 games (a mistake) then it will be 3 6 6.   Either way you for sure play C State, Air Force and UNM every year.   Given you aren’t stuck under Boise every year you might actually make the Championship game for once.

the only possible variation I see is do they swap Utah State and New Mexico?

A poster on the CSNBBS realignment board pointed out that a 3/5-5 doesn't work for a 12-team conference but rather for a 14-team conference (your own team plus 3 protected rivals you play every year plus 5 non-protected teams you play in alternating year A plus 5 non-protected teams you play in alternating year B equals 14).

What does work for a 12-team conference is either a 5/3-3 (if you want an 8-game schedule) or a 7/2-2 (if you want a 9-game schedule).

12 schools, 5/3-3, 8-game schedule, new protected rivals replacing current division opponents are italicized

Hawaii: San Jose St, Fresno State, San Diego St, Nevada, UNLV
San Jose St: Hawaii, Fresno St, San Diego St, Nevada, Utah St
Fresno St: Hawaii, San Jose St, San Diego St, Nevada, Boise St
San Diego St: Hawaii, San Jose St, Fresno St, UNLV, New Mexico

Colorado State: Boise St, Utah St, Wyoming, Air Force, New Mexico
Air Force: UNLV, Utah State, Wyoming, Colorado State, New Mexico
New Mexico: San Diego St, UNLV, Wyoming, Colorado State, Air Force

12 schools, 7/2-2, 9-game schedule, new protected rivals are italicized

hawai’i at 5-3 getting in over a 7-1 air force in 2018 still got the hillbilly’s and hair thompson’s pantys in a bunch. west side.

In 2014 a 6-6 and 5-3 Fresno, got in over a 10-2 and 6-2 CSU squad.

In 2016 SDSU won the West at 6-2. Boise also went 6-2. Since they didn't play each other that year, the next tie-breaker, I assume, is common opponents.  In that case, Both beat common opponents except CSU.  Boise beat CSU. CSU beat SUDS. Boise should have been in the CCG.

I mean that was a little uneven but the only truly horrible year for division was 2014 when Fresno made it in at 6-6 over (in the non division method) a 10-2 Colorado State. Fresno ended the year 6-8 and probably gets the nod as the worst team to ever make a MW championship game. I mean that Fresno team did play (and lose) to 5 ranked teams so it is possible they were better or at least as good as some 8-4 teams that ended up in the MW championship game but I am not sure.

Hmm

i think the poster misunderstood how it would work.  The advantage is you see one out of division teams 1 more time. It’s really each out of quad team every other year (like we have now) and one of the 8 once every 8 years.  So in an 8 year cycle you play 5 times instead of 4.

using Fresno as an example and the most obvious pods.

year 1

Fresno would have 3 games against their protected rivals:

At hawaii, At SDSU and SJSU

Then

At Nevada, Boise, Utah st

At Wyoming, CState,

Year 2

At SJSU, Hawaii, SDSU

At UNLV, Utah State,

New Mexico, At Air Force, At CState

Year 3

At Hawaii At SDSU SJSU

Nevada, at Boise, UNLV

Wyoming, At Air Force

Year 4

Hawaii, SDSU, At SJSU

At Utah State, UNLV

New Mexico, C State, At Wyoming

This model is too imbalanced and won’t work.  You are also assuming everything must be on a 4 year cycle.  It doesn’t have to be…..  you can have a 4 year cycle and an 8 year cycle in tandem.

That's exactly what we do now, just without official Divisions.

Personally, I like 3 pods of 4 teams. Playing against out of pod teams 5/8 beats 4/8.

I would miss playing Nevada yearly as that has become a good and competitive rivalry. But, UNLV is pretty much a guaranteed W.

Meh

Could you link ?

I like the idea but, I know the AFA doesn't like the idea. I'm thinking there's another School that doesn't either. Hawaii maybe ?

Last time this was discussed quite a few schools were cool to the idea and AFA was flat out against it even saying they would leave MWC if that would happen.

I think we should have two pods.  Each team from each pod could play half the teams from the other pods home and home, then play the other half home and home the next two years.  Of course you would play everyone in your pod annually.  At the end of the season you could take the best team from each pod and have them face off in the CCG.  This system would give each team a random opportunity to finish as the best of the conference as opposed to making preseason assumptions to try and create a match up that would never result in a playoff appearance.  I'm not sure you could find a fairer way to determine a conference champ in a 12 team conference.

Sounds like what they are doing now.

And just like that, one of the greatest groupings of college football teams in the universe ever is up in smoke.   RIP SEC Mountain.  #Neverforget.  #SECMTN. #P5originals.
