The curious case of Bryce Petersen

Recommended Posts

Bryce Petersen was the starting Center (and occasional OG) for Akron for three years (2018-2020) after first playing one season at Riverside City College in CA.   I have no idea who or IF he played for anyone in 2021 but he entered the Transfer Portal in August of 2021.

https://gozips.com/sports/football/roster/bryce-petersen/6739

He eventually ended up committing to San Jose State and was even listed on this projected 2022 lineup for SJSU as their starting center:

https://www.ourlads.com/ncaa-football-depth-charts/depth-chart/san-jose-state/92729

And several stories in newspapers and websites also mentioned him as a likely starter on the O-line for SJSU for 2022 as well.

Yet NOW..............he is not listed at all on the San Jose State football team roster and it appears he has entered the transfer portal again as of April 27, 2022.

And on his listing on 247Sports' entry for him on the Transfer Portal he is listed with this recent clarification "Bryce Petersen is a 6-3, 280-pound Offensive Guard from Mckinleyville, CA. He has committed to Nevada Wolf Pack."

So it would seem that after playing one season at Riverside City College in Riverside, CA., and three more seasons as the starting Center for Akron he entered the transfer portal in August of 2021 but didn't transfer to San Jose State until December of 2021, i.e., he sat out the 2021 season.  Then four months later jumped back into the transfer portal and is now said to be a "commit" to Nevada for 2022.   And that would be his 6th year of eligibility by my count.  I just find this journey of his to be curious.

2017 - Riverside City College

2018 - Akron University

2019 - Akron University

2020 - Akron University

2021 - ????????

2022 SPRING - San Jose State

2022 FALL - Nevada ???

Petersen didn’t work out at SJSU. He came from a pretty basic straight ahead run blocking scheme at Akron and had trouble picking up a more complicated scheme. After spring practice he was looking at a backup position, so he decided to move on. Not sure why because with only one year left and no spring practice, he’s going to be hard pressed to play anywhere. Maybe he’s just done with football.

Update: Looks like he’s headed to Reno.

Interesting, here’s some more info:

https://nevadasportsnet.com/news/reporters/six-years-after-committing-to-nevada-bryce-petersen-will-finally-play-for-wolf-pack

I guess he originally committed to Polian out of HS, but Norvell pulled the offer when he was hired. With how awful our o-line has been we can use all the help we can get.
