I somewhat disagree with this. It depends on many things. Also on what exactly counts as "heavily"

I’ve gone through two “crashes” as I approached retirement.  The later was very short-lived a few months before retirement, but the former was pretty painful and a decade-plus out. Both times I some raised cash on the way down and hedged via selling a few long calls, buying a few puts, and trading a short index etf.

Those moves were insurance. In the long run they actually cost me. I knew they likely would even as I raised cash. I did sell one fair sized holding around $50 on its way down to $4, but everything else eventually recovered and rose.

Anyway, I don’t live for myself and especially financially.  I live cheap and try to grow capital over time for the next gen. Equities are great, simple long-term investments.  Have some cash, real estate if possible, a little gold, a little crypto.  Be diversified and a bit nimble.
