Boise Quietly Replaced 40% of their Assistants

Recommended Posts

OUT:

RB coach Winston Venable (to pursue other opportunities)

ST/Edge coach Stacy Collins (poached for same position at Penn State)

TE/ST coach Kent Riddle (to spend more time with family)

CB coach Jeron Johnson (to spend more time with family)

IN:

RB coach Keith Bhonapha (from Washington, formerly on Petersen's staff at Boise and UW, not retained by new staff this year)

ST/EDGE coach Kelly Poppinga (BYU grad and a victim of Mendenhall's retiring from UVA, where he was co-DC)

TE coach and running coordinator Nate Potter (from Montana State, a former consensus All-American OT at Boise State, '08-'11)

CB coach Demario Warren (fired Southern Utah head coach)

---

Most Boise fans think Bhonapha (excellent recruiter) and Poppinga (very experienced) are upgrades at their respective positions.

Riddle has been around the Boise program forever (since ~2001) so that one was a head-scratcher, but Nate Potter has been rising fast.  Hopefully can resurrect the Boise running game.

Warren is 36 years old and already has 6 years experience as a head coach.  Started off well, then tanked at a tough place to coach in FCS.  Played running back at UC-Davis when Boise OC Tim Plough was their QB.

---

Besides the schools with HC changes, have any other MW programs had notable staff recycling?

Change was needed but the OC needed to go.  Real basic halftime adjustments stumped him.  Might still be time to remove him.

Some people don't want to live directly in their big brother's shadow.

Depends on the paycheck.

"I never saw a buckin' hoss to top Steamboat. Fact is, he was the closest thing to perpetual motion that ever wore hair. Few men could stand that kind of battering without bleeding from the nose, and most became nauseated as well. Ol' Steamboat put some of the toughest into the hospital for repairs."

You hired Poppinga? God save you.

There are only two things I can't stand in this world: people who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch.

Why do you say that?  BYU defensive stats look pretty good when he was OLB coach there (2011-2015). Also okay at Virginia and 3 years as Co-DC.  He took an Edge/ST position at Boise so will be back to what he knows.  I could coach Boise's EDGE position this year as much talent as they have.

He’s likely a good coach but one of the most unlikeable people on the planet.

Kelly? Are you maybe thinking of Brady?

Oh shit you are right. My bad @roughrider and @bsu_alum9. His brother is insufferable and his name is Brady.

I'm going to say Kelly is just a lesser dick. The whole Poppinga clan is a collection of douches... but no doubt that Brady is king douche.

I don't know any of them personally, so I won't make a judgment, but what do you expect from a bunch of Wyomingites?

That is a lot of coaches being replaced in one sweep.  If you guys expect the team to jell out of the gate, you're mistaken.  Even mid-season would be a stretch.

It's going to be another year of rebuilding but with a little easier schedule 8-9 wins should be doable.  2023 or 2024 is the year IMO.
