Play-off Committee Jan Meeting

Recommended Posts

Well the conference managers are going to meet again during the Championship game to decide on a model to expand the play-off.  We shall see if we get agreement.  The plan on the table is top 6 conferences get an auto bid and 6 at large teams for a 12 team play-off.

I suspect the PAC-12 to push to maintain preferred status with P5 auto-bids and throwing a bone to the top ranked G5 team.  Basically the PAC-12 sucks and would not have been a top 6 conference this year.   Instead of earning it on the field expect them to politically flex their muscle.

Except they would have been a top 6 conference.  Matter of fact, they were top 5 - Utah was #11 in the rankings, Pitt was #12.

This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

Rankings are newspaper power not on field performance

Top North teams
Oregon: squeaked by Fresno (2nd pacific) at home
WSU: lost to Utah State (1st Mountain) at home
Oregon State: beat Hawaii (5th Pacific) lost
Cal: lost to Nevada (3rd Pacific) at home

Top South Teams
Utah: lost to SDSU (1st Pacific) at SDSU
ASU: beat UNLV (6th Pacific) at home
UCLA: lost to Fresno (2nd Pacific) at home
USC: beat SJSU (4th Pacific) at home

* The top PAC teams played the MW 8 times regular season
* 7 games were at home with PAC-12 refs
* They were 4-4 in those games
* They were 2-4 in top 4 versus top 4 games (5 at home)
* None played Boise who beat BYU (beat Utah, ASU) or AF who beat Louisville

Oh man, do you think they'll make CFB regular season as popular as College BB?!

The problem with basketball is the regular season champs should get the automatic bid.

No they weren’t. The PAC’s OOC winning percentage was abysmal.

You need to look at the CFP rankings.  Thats how they determine the playoffs.

And yet Fresno barely squeaked by UTEP.

They should still let the Tourney Winner in.

Oh c’mon, this is all about you beating the world power known as UCLA.

No it’s about the conference beating the PAC-12.  I get as a Boise fan it’s hard to think about the conference first but give it your best shot.

I would prefer an 8 team Tourney. The Five Conference Winners. The best G5. Two best at large. Sixteen is to many because you would have to start right after the CCG.

This Years Tourney based on final CFP rankings would have been:

1 alabama v 8. Utah

2 Michigan v 7 Baylor

3 Georgia v 6. tOSU

4 Cinci v 5 Notre Dame

Except they dont choose a conference.  They choose the conference champion.  The MWC champ was unranked.  I know its hard to think about that but give it your best shot.

The regular season already went to shit when the BCS was created, and conference realignment shoveled dirt on its grave by breaking up historic rivalries (and in some cases ruining potential great rivalries before they could even get going). It's bizarre that people still complain about the "sanctity" of the regular season when it's already been gone for like 25 years now. There's a reason why the media already spends all season talking about the playoffs instead of the games in front of them.

The downside to that model versus what was negotiated is it puts the G5 as second class citizens.

Double checked the proposal.  You are correct it is the highest ranked conference champs.  My snark by the way was not directed at you.
