UNLV at Univ. of San Francisco

I've always felt that UNLV should be the class of the MWC, and it's absolutely baffling that not only are they most certainly not that, they aren't even close to contending year after year. 20+ years of the MWC now and two tournament titles to show for it. Zero regular season titles. It makes no sense at all.

Best arena in the MWC, arguably the best city, best and richest history, and .500 ball every year is the result.

I hope Kruger works out for the Rebs, and it's too early to tell if he's going to be good or not, especially with a pretty tough schedule, but things not looking great out of the gate.

"...best city..."? Seriously?

The UNLV men's basketball team lost at San Francisco 83-62 Saturday night at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.

Bryce Hamilton led the Runnin' Rebels (4-5) in scoring with 25 points on 10 of 19 shooting. Donovan Williams added 12 points.

The Dons (9-0) remained undefeated and were led by Jamaree Bouyea's game-high 30 points on 11 of 16 from the field, including 8 of 10 on 3-pointers. Yauhen Massalski added 18 points and a game-high 16 rebounds, while Khalil Shabazz contributed 12 points, five assists and five steals.

BIG RUN: After trailing by double digits, UNLV fought its way back into the game and trailed by just two at 47-45 with just over 13 minutes left. A 19-3 USF run over the next five minutes put the game out of reach.

QUOTABLE: "We fought for 30 minutes, but that's not enough. The message to the team was pretty clear and is an easy one going forward. That point in practice that you feel tired, that point in the game you are feeling tired... 30 minutes just isn't enough. They made some shots early and we could have folded pretty quick but we fought back to end the first half. Again, it just wasn't enough and it got away there toward the end." - UNLV head coach Kevin Kruger

NOTES:
- USF improved to 6-0 at home this season.
- It marked the 16th time the two schools have met in men's basketball but the first time at USF since 1975.
- UNLV shot 51.7% in the first half, but only 25.0% in the second.
- USF shot 50.0% in the second half and 45.8% for the game.
- USF out-rebounded UNLV 46-29 and scored 42 points in the paint to the Runnin' Rebels' 24.
- UNLV's bench outscored USF's 40-12.
- USF led at halftime, 40-37.
- UNLV has made at least one 3-pointer in a NCAA-record 1,138 straight games.

NEXT FOR THE RUNNIN' REBELS: UNLV will return to Las Vegas for two games next week, however those will be at Mandalay Bay's Michelob Ultra Arena as the Thomas & Mack Center hosts the National Finals Rodeo. The Runnin' Rebels will face Seattle on Wednesday, Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. and Hartford on Saturday, Dec. 11 at 12 p.m.

???? how the hell do you gauge "recruiting success"?

Isn't winning the best gauge? TUNLVFAN has phucking "stars" in their eyes, Rebel recruiting has sucked.

I’m referring to recruiting rankings, merely because you said that UNLV recruiting is hurt by parents not willing to send their kids here.

That hasn’t stopped us from constant top 10 classes under Rice and even Menzies and TJ Otz had their share of success. We haven’t won due to the constant roster turnover and coaching that ranged from horrible (Rice) to just average (TJ Otz).

If you’re such a UNLV fan, why did you go elsewhere?

Penance for not hiring Ben Howland, whom some thought didn't have big enough "upside" in comparison to the short bus Dave Rice.

He was literally in TKM's office ready to sign, when Zimm's mom started tweeting about 'loyalty', and threatened for her son to go elsewhere. Tina caved and gave Rice one more half year.

I wasn't the one said it but regardless of stupid subjective recruiting rankings, which UNLV fans get sucked in by every freaking year, Rebel talent has been mediocre at best.

True statement. Boise State has athletes that never learned how to shoot a basketball.

The sheer number of 4* and 5* guys who cant shoot the basketball is shocking. Combine that with lack of on-court chemistry due to reliance on the transfer portal to build a squad and you get really crappy basketball.

Maybe in the MWC, but the better athletes in the P5 conferences shoot the ball pretty well. Better IMO than they used to. I think it’s because they are getting better coaching at a younger age in the AAU leagues. Ball handling is also much better than it used to be although part of that is they’re allowed to carry the ball

Part of the problem with some kids is all they learned to do is dunk and never developed good shooting form.

Overall basketball skills have come a long way from my high school days although it’s too much one on one. I’d like to see better teamwork.

4* and 5* players can occasionally be overrated by the recruiting services.

R E L A X Rebs scheduled tough this year the guys are still figuring it out it's a patchwork unit hoping they make some noise in conference. Year 1 of the rebuild "long term". Just need 3 consecutive years of success then things will start rolling.

At this point why would anyone prominent want to touch this job with a 10 foot pole given the extreme fanbase? Especially if TJO keeps it up in Ames, maybe we are a killer of coaching careers…

Dwayne Morgan.

If'n you say so.

I kinda wonder, though.  All of the recruiting sites rated Miles Norris 4* and a top-100 national prepster. If the scouts had known at the time he'd be a benchwarmer at Oregon and then a two year starter for UCSB, would they have still rated him the same?

Norris has shown glimpses at times, in games here and there, why he was rated so highly.  He was the missing piece last season and a great third option, but has been inconsistent as a #2.

When your getting your ass kicked by USF, you have to admit you don’t have elite talent. UNLV fans have been rather delusional for a couple decades now.

There is nothing at all special about Vegas.  It’s fun for a weekend to party and gamble, but it’s a pretty awful place to live.  Hot, zero natural beauty, nothing beyond the superficial going on there.  Anything more than 3-4 days there is a waste of time.
