Funny (not really) true story.  One of my childhood friends is Mexican and adopted by his white father, who is super MAGA, election stolen, no shot for me, commies won't win dude but otherwise a good enough person.  As many kids do, he has adopted his parents political beliefs and will go on tirades about how Mexico would have been better off if the South won and Mexico joined to Confederated States of America....

No, that isn't what I was going for. 

"Hispanic" isn't a race. It's used as a placeholder, generally for "mestizo", in American English, which is some weird shit. "Hispanic" doesn't mean "brown", it means "native tongue = Spanish." "Latino" is short for "Latin American" which means "Speaks Spanish or Portuguese west of the Azores". There's a lot of brown people who speak Spanish, but there's a hell of a lot of white people and black people who speak Spanish, too.

This is true but I've often found it's based on class more than anything. Latinos who've made it in America, are solidly middle and upper middle class, and who are, let's be honest, lighter-skinned are more likely to do this. 

This phenomenon doesn't represent the majority of Latinos in this country who are working class.

This is true everywhere in Latin America. Colorism is pervasive. Lighter skinned people with more ancestry from Spain are almost always the wealthiest and almost always compose the ruling elite. Systemic racism continues, not just against Afro-Latinos, but also people with more indigenous ancestry.

ok, so portagees, French and Italians are white now.?  Right. Try telling my grandmother that.  The definition is always changing.

Any family that has lived in a place like CA for more than a couple generations is so mixed that classifying someone as white or non white is absurd.

a Romanian immigrant are they white?  Is a 4th generation American with some Mexican American heritage and a Spanish last name, they aren’t white?

No, it's idiotic.  The whole notion of a "white race" is counterproductive and biologically, anthropologically, and historically inaccurate.  It's not imprecise,  it's a fallacy.

Yes, if your family members came over, say, in 1940, they would’ve been deemed “white” and avoided the discriminatory actions faced by black people, American Indians, Latinos, etc.
