FAU, Charlotte, North Texas, UTSA, Rice and UAB to AAC

I expected them to expand but not by that much. Going to cause so many issues with $$ unless that many teams was necessary to keep the tv deal they had

They're going to lose money regardless.  And the new schools will have no issues taking partial shares for a while.  That combined with exit fees will lessen the blow for Those Who Remain.

This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

Damn. Adding four schools would have basically forced them to go East or west, but adding 6 let’s them do both. Clearly a way to preempt the MWC from encroaching in to Texas.

But adding Rice and Charlotte was just dumb IMO. If you really want to go with 6 schools then drop those two and add Marshall and Coastal Carolina.

Losing out on UTSA and UNT sucks, but them adding some crap schools is a net positive for the MWC, IMO.

The only thing that I see Charlotte having is a good TV market. Rice only has academics. If this forces us not to encroach upon Texas then I suppose it is a good move for the AAC but Rice just adds dead weight.

God damn the SMU 247 board is gold.

Your administration is the reason why our basketball league is bleeding out currently. If you didn't insist on San Jose being in the MWC, so you guys would have someone that votes similar to SDSU, every team in the MWC wouldn't have to play 2 games vs. a team with a 330 RPI ranking EVERY season.

They pissed? Hopefully enough to leave the AAC

They will still make their 7 million.  MWC is only paying 5 and our TV providers don't seem interested in making an increase.  They can be upset but, they aren't going anywhere.  It seems like maybe we are with the wrong TV money.

Not gonna happen.  Like the Big 12, they'll see a cut in their per team money.

They will keep the 7 mil and pay the new schools +2 million.  That is what I'm hearing.  The new schools are okay with that because they are doubling their money.

Well hopefully they're pissed enough that they would at least consider joining the Mountain West. If yall could get them and another Texas school it would be awesome or is SMU against any other Texas schools being with them?

Aresco just admitted that the MWC is the better conference.  Wana bet money SMU and Memphis are on the phone with Hair right now? Don't do it Hair, we don't need them LOL

SMU would be an awesome add but I don't see Memphis being the 2nd option, probably Tulsa if any other AAC team were to jump ship.

The claim is ESPN will keep the payout the same if they expanded to 14 without raiding any ESPN conference.

The leftover eight will still get their 7 mil until the deal expires.

AAC is now being held together by paper clips and scotch tape.  League won’t last more than a few years until the buyout and ESPN money run out and things start to look really bad.  That is the not the move of a conference planning for long term sustainability.

If MWC looks for any expansion, NMSU and UTEP have always made the most sense based on history and regionality.

SMU/Memphis/Tulsa/etc. aren’t likely going to leave to the MW. Per Thamel’s report, the AAC is expecting to be able to pay the remaining “old” schools the $7m a year while paying the new schools around $2m (slowly increasing upwards) until their contract runs out in the 2030’s which is still around 3x their old pay. Likely a bit of them keeping the same level of pay probably has to do with the exit fees from the schools leaving imo.

right now in terms of pay it’s a wash or less due to exit fees for any AAC school to MW jump excluding travel

Found this from back in Sept.

https://www.mwcconnection.com/2021/9/14/22671827/how-the-mountain-west-should-navigate-realignment-which-can-benefit-basketball

Now a lot of what he says I disagree with but with the latest AAC expansion rumors there is a tiny bit more Merit to some of it. If the AAC is fully going in on Texas this in particular is going to piss off SMU. The MWC should go after SMU and Tulsa along with Gonzaga which would make the MWC a good basketball conference and a solid Football Conference.

MOUNTAIN DIVISION:

SMU, Tulsa, USU, WYO, CSU, AF, NM

STATES: (OK, TX, UT, WY, NM, CO)

WEST DIVISION:

BSU, UNLV, UNR, SJSU, FSU, SDSU, Hawaii

STATES: (CA, NV, ID, HI)

With this move you would have Boise getting what they wanted by being able to move into the West division and AF gets the central/TX exposure they desire. Also in regards to football create a little bit of cushion for inevitable future expansion shenanigans.

For basketball you add a traditional March Madness team in Gonzaga giving you a total of 14 Football and Basketball schools. Granted this is very much a Longshot idea but I don't think it would be wrong for the MWC to pursue it

The MWC and AAC contracts are very similar dollar wise. The AACs is just much longer and backloaded. The MWC gets a new contact much sooner and may surpass the AAC in a couple years.  If you take a ten year rolling average starting about now, you will see why it didn't make sense for Colorado State or Air Force to leave-- if a bigger payout was their goal.

Supposedly,  SMU was on the expansion committee and signed off on the six, CUSA programs.

Temple has to be upset over the adds. Their travel costs were already killing them.

Wichita can't be very happy either.

There must be a huge disconnect between the fans and the Administration of SMU then.
