UNLV Going to the PAC12!

Recommended Posts

There it is. As reputable as any other source that being quoted and passed around. Quietly and in the background like true professionals. My sources say SDSU is a quiet partner in the process as well

Was listening to Bill Riley’s interview of Matt Hayes this afternoon and was surprised to hear Haye’s take that if the PAC 12 expands under Kliavkoff, UNLV will definitely be 1 of the schools that gets in. I’ve always thought UNLV was too far beneath the conference’s academic standards to be considered. But I did look online to see where they are at in regard to being a tier 1 research institution and was surprised to see that they’ve reached that milestone.

Compelling reasons beyond performance on the field. Money fixes the good coach issue over time.

What else does UNLV have going for it? For one, the media market is viable when considering expansion guidelines. The Las Vegas market comes in at 39th nationally in the latest Nielsen DMA rankings. Only fellow MWC member, San Diego State, is in a better situation, registering at 29th. The next closest is the Albuquerque area at 46th, Colorado Springs at 85th, and Boise, which isn’t even in the top 100. Available TV sets will be a huge factor when the powers that be start looking for new schools.

But what more will the P5 require? The Pac 12 looks at academics very stringently from their fellow institutions. Since UNLV will most likely covet a Pac invite the most, they can rest easy in regard to their academic standings. As of 2018, UNLV reached R1 (The top) status by the Carnegie Classifications of Institutions of Higher Education. There are only 130 other schools in the entire country that share this accolade with the Rebels.

Article is wrong is. San Francisco-Oak-San Jose is #6 in Nielsen DMA rankings. So two fellow members are in a better situation. It's a moot point. SJSU is faaar from being invited. Keep building it, rebs!

Just about every conference TV deal is coming up in 2023/2024. This year and the first half of 22 start slowly and then the real dominos fall will start. Everyone will be positioning for when  the real craziness and carnage starts with conference schools leaving the NCAA behind and going semi-pro in essence. The final puzzle pieces are now aligned with the OUT move.

If UNLV ever gets a sniff from the PAC - It's going to be the Vegas package that gets it done & not just UNLV on it's own merits ........it's going to be TV market, growth in/of that market, the peripherals that LV brings as a location/destination & the immediate bump in local interest / perception / involvement in UNLV that would come with PAC membership

There's current P5 schools & programs that are now considered major players that before the insertion of TV $$ (ESPN era to today) have benefitted from the surge in TV, surge in $$ to turn around once miserable programs..........Wisconsin, Kansas St & Oregon are three that come to mind.........all were pretty much crap from the 60's to late 80's & then got going in the $$ / TV era

There's a lot of potential for UNLV if it were in a big $$ conference

“Las Vegas”is absolutely a big part of the draw for all of these various sports migrating here. The “Entertainment Capital of the World” sells well across all sports spectrums professional and otherwise. The professional teams here are supporting the community as well as UNLV and it is having an impact as well. Teams from across the country are scheduling games here as a neutral site just so there fans can come and play in Vegas. It seems that UNLV can and has been preparing to leverage this even more.

UNLV would benefit probably more than any other school by going to a P5 conference.  The biggest issue is finding a good head coach, and the money would be there to hire somebody.  Plus, we are a desirable city to live in.

Speaking of desirable, how come Vanderbilt football never got going?  Nashville is the best city in the SEC.

Because other than Jay Cutler, they dont let dumbasses into Vanderbilt.  Shrinks the talent pool.

In the beginning the Universe was created.
This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

When UNR gets into the AAU?

*I'm being facetious.  UNR's campus, in the next twenty years, has a higher probability of burning down in a wildfire than getting into the AAU.

Well Vegas has that going for it! It’s hard for fires to start on miles of parking lots.

Tons of ideas and options out there…

My idea is that the PAC 12 and MWC create a merger of the conferences. How it would work is that the top 12 ranked teams from the previous season would be in the PAC 12 and the bottom 12 teams would be the Mountain West. It is a variation of the relegation of European Soccer where the top 3 teams move up to the next league and the bottom three move down a league. In this version, there is no limit to the number of teams who can move, if you are a top 12 team you are in the top league. One advantage is that the geographical area is the same as the two conference cover the Western part of the country so travel would not increase for the teams. If two rivals happened to be in different conferences they could be scheduled as out of conference games Oregon/Oregon State, Washington/Washington State, or Utah State/Wyoming as the battle for Bridger’s Rifle needs to happen. The conferences could also set up a similar system for basketball and baseball to maximize the number of teams and seeding in March Madness and the College World Series.
