MLS to Las Vegas

Kinda surprised it wasnt bigger, but then Leon isnt a glamor club like Chivas or Club America.

This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

Ever heard of ENGLISH Premier League????

Nobody in Europe cares about MLS.  Hardly anyone in the US cares about MLS. If they follow any soccer at all it’s usually EPL.

The Vegas soccer demo is almost all Hispanic.  The Lights suck donkey ass but they do a great job marketing to the local hispanic community.

The only people that will give a shit about a Vegas MLS team are those same people.  That is our soccer market.  But it's a rather large soccer crazy demo.

In California it’s the same thing.  The fan base is largely Hispanic and most speak English as a second language.  That’s the target audience of MLS here. Sorry, but them are just the facts.

In your original comment you used MLS in place of soccer. And it goes without saying that Euros laugh at the thought of the MLS. Your argument is disingenuous. That fact that the MLS continues to expands means there is a US market. Further, cities have voluntarily put in bids for expansion. Which invalidates your comments.

Yup...they have more cities interested in teams than they have spots.  And all the recent owners have one thing in common - their net worth involves a 'b'.  The exploding price to buy in has so far only scared one off - Sacramento, which is why Las Vegas is even in play right now.  When Ron Burkle bailed on Sacramento during the pandemic and their bid collapsed, that opened the door.

The stadium will be new and it will be in the downtown area. Sam Boyd is for monster trucks. It is not the droid they're looking for. Smh.

That'll have to be a new stadium fully privately funded then.  How many soccer games have you personally attended at SBS?  Did you go to the 1999 CONCACAAF cup games or the Real Madrid/Santos game?  I did.  SBS is just fine for MLS to start with.  Let's just hear from UNLV's old soccer coach on the matter.  It could also be a boon for UNLV athletics on selling the property.

"Among the options if UNLV were to sell the property on which the stadium sits, Barry Barto, UNLV’s former soccer coach and a specialist in the school’s planning and construction department, said it would still be a viable option for Major League Soccer should the city eventually land a franchise.

“There are great (sight lines) in that stadium … and the stadium itself really has great bones,” said Barto, who doesn’t believe Sam Boyd’s edge-of-town location would be a major deterrent to an MLS owner.

“It’s not that easy to get to the arenas now if you’re in Summerlin or deep in Henderson. I would think you could put forward a reasonable amount of resources and dollars that would make it a quality (MLS) facility.”

Sam Boyd's edge of town location is absolutely an issue.  Its why the Fire left their SSS to go back to Soldier Field and why FC Dallas has attendance issues.

Dude.  Just stop.  The location is the BEST part.  You don't seem to have any fckn clue that almost the entire soccer fan base in Vegas lives within probably 15mi. of that location.  East/NE Vegas.  Off the 95.  Easy access.  The biggest soccer park in the city right next to it where EVERY KID playing soccer in Vegas plays at one time or another.

Keep going though.  You're fun.

That seems like a small crowd to me too, especially for such a big event.

Think this was a lower hierarchy soccer matchup - there was some soccer match this summer that had well into the 50,000 range attendance

If the "edge of town" was an issue the AAA Aviators wouldn't be out in Summerlin..........& they are there because Summerlin parent company owns the team

Personally I wouldn't mind seeing a nice clean 25,000 seat soccer stadium for a new MLS team - Not that i would go, but it would be good for the areas

You mean a minor league baseball team?  Not exactly a valid comparison.  But Summerlin is one of the proposed stadium sites, so one of those billionaires and MLS dont think Summerlin is an issue. The fact that nobody is talking about Sam Boyd as a site should be a clue.  I dont claim to an expert (unlike some people) but I do follow this stuff pretty closely.  Moreso than 702, apparently.  Everything Ive said about LV and MLS is public and verifiable information.

FC Dallas' stadium is in the midst of a huge youth soccer population.  The nation's biggest youth tournament is played there.  Hasnt and doesnt translate into attendance.  There is a couple others where mistakes were made in choice of site, prioritizing site cost to site location (hello, Chicago and Salt Lake City).  MLS has learned from their mistakes.

It's looking real good for LV to get a franchise, and good for them.  You couldnt have said that about 18 months.  Somebody needs to send Ron Burkle a thank you card.

I hope LV does get a new MLS franchise - would be good for the overall community & adds the the changing perceptions about Las Vegas as more than just gambling centric - Another thing that brings business legitimacy to the area !!

Looks like group looking to bring MLS to LV has a stadium site in mind.  And it aint Sam Boyd.

https://soccerstadiumdigest.com/2022/02/mls-talks-vegas-expansion-with-edens-and-sawiris/

Adding Las Vegas in 2024 would give Edens and crew time to put together a development and stadium deal; Allegiant Stadium is being discussed as a stop-gap venue option should a new stadium not being completed by then.

For Edens, the play would be a real-estate play as much as a soccer play. Edens’ Fortress Investment Group owns Brightline, which is planning a high-speed light-rail line between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, terminating at Las Vegas Boulevard and Warm Springs Road. Brightline controls the 110-acre site, considered prime real estate at the south end of the Strip, a few miles from McCarren and within easy access of Interstate 15 and the 215 Beltway. It was once coveted by the Oakland A’s as a ballpark site, but the plan now is for Brightline to use it for development and a 65,000-square-foot terminal—as well as potentially a new soccer stadium.

Nah, Mexican Spanish speakers that speak English as a second language watch Liga MX and Eurpean leagues and don’t give a shit about MLS. Non-Mexican Spanish speakers also don’t give a shit about MLS. Im not sure they watch Liga MX, but MLS would be firmly behind Euro leagues as far as interest goes.

Think of it this way, if you got a job in Japan and permanently relocated, would you just immediately drop your favorite MLB team and become a supporter of the nearest NPB team? Probably not, I imagine you’d still watch your team on some streaming service. If it were me would I adopt a local team and catch some games in person? Probably. But I’d still always be a bigger fan of MLB.

Looking at that rendering and I can't pin point where that location is - not from the road & freeway layout - Think it might be this large parcel with the 125 & 15 FWY interchange at the north & Blue Diamond Road interchange in the south -- But none of the roadways align like the rendering or any of the background existing buildings -- Looks like a conceptual rendering from another proposed site in another city that we will be basis of LV design

Raiders Stadium was originally designed for the LA market, but they took the design & moved it to LV when Raiders shifted locations
