Should the MWC try to land UNT, Rice, UTEP, and/or UTSA FIRST?

Based on what? What’s bad exactly? That they lost members? It looks like they’ll have the pick of the litter for replacements, I don’t see where the doom and gloom is coming from.  The only bad news is going to come from the lower level g5 conferences that will fall victim to consolidation.

What? The pick of the litter.  You know what that means right?

It means the aac will get to pick any school it wants (out of those not in any conference which is worth anything).

Do you honestly think that is even remotely correct? Any school? Seriously?

Dont sweat it - Woosh is playing ignorant (or maybe he's not playing) with regards to my comment on how Aresco took his orders from ESPN during realignment then screwed them up.

Emails, right Woosh?

This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

Mountain West won't be expanding in football but they are probably looking at a few basketball schools. Maybe Grand Canyon but their goal is the WCC.

Why?  We are already stuck with a 20 game conference schedule next year..Bumping up to 12 means a 22 game schedule..Blech...

If CSU and AFA leave and aren't backfilled with all-sports replacements, adding a hoops-only school would bump up the conference schedule from 16 to 18 games.

Naturally Gonzaga is the target, but if the Zags were to pass then GCU would be the next best alternative, assuming the MWC presidents could stomach their poor institutional fit.  GCU enrolls about 25,000 on campus and 90,000 more online.  Their arena seats 7,000 and they frequently sell it out.  They won the 2021 WAC title and had four 20-win seasons from 2015 to 2019.

The alternatives to GCU aren't great.  One is Utah Valley, which has the largest university enrollment in the state with 37,000 students and puts about 3,500 fans per game in their 8,500 seat arena.  The Wolverines had a couple of 20-win seasons in 2017 and 2018.  Seattle and Denver are desirable market-wise and academically, but haven't done anything on the court recently and only draw 1,000-1,500 fans per game each.  Cal Baptist with its shiny new 5,000-seat arena and good fan support is intriguing, but lacks enough of a D1 track record to be a good candidate.

If two schools leave it would be 10 for football and 9 for other sports..I am not sure why there would be a need to add..However, because of the vote to go to 20 game basketball schedules next year I guess we will have to take on 2 non football schools..Not delightful..But what the hey...

Or they could take another vote.

Unless we get raided for 4 schools and it’s a matter of survival, the only teams worth adding are basketball only schools. Gonzaga, St. Mary’s, etc.

A shrewd move would be to offer St. Mary’s a spot in the MW to really force Gonzaga’s hand. Is there a chance in hell Gonzaga would stay in a West Coast Conference that doesn’t have St. Mary’s?

This is not the Ivy League.  A poor institutional fit will not matter to the MWC.  But if I'm wrong and that does matter, GCU still has the money to make it work.

Just came across this interesting tidbit in an interview Karl Benson gave a week ago in which he talks about why the Sun Belt decided on 10 football members:

“And we looked at the analytics, and we looked at the statistics and we've looked at the history — is that [a] 10-team league delivers more teams that have winning records than a 12-or 14-team does in the percentage.”

Not sure how much credence to give this but it may be another reason to stand pat if AFA and CSU leave.

Probably the best idea.  No reason to add in more middle of the pack teams.  Same reason I don't get by AAC would want middle of pack AF and a bottom feeder. But sure go for it.

It's looking like the AAC would prefer UTSA out of that group. UTSA just beat Illinois and is undefeated.

The MWC would probably be best served trying to get them off the board first.

Otherwise, Hair will get what's left.

Hair getting what is left is something we all are accustomed to.  UTSA is not great now but they do have a good future. UTSA is very probably the best Texas school we could get. That is why Hair will not even try to get them.

At the g5 level yes.  The only program I’ve heard that hasn’t made any overtures to the aac so far is Army (of the usual suspects).
