I always wondered why the UNLV administration has never valued football. It seems they should have a lot of built in recruiting advantages, but have never really bothered with doing what it takes to build a program, but have instead gone easy or cheap routes, such as hiring high school coaches and such. Kind of a shame, as I do think of all the MWC schools UNLV would be the one with the potential to eventually become a Pac school due to market and geography, but their athletic department is not close, and their football is pretty much never even competitive.

I think they're serious now, but they weren't in the past.

Arroyo is our first shot since maybe Robinson of dedicating more money to the program and staff. Over the last decade or so UNLV football has been making strides forward in many areas but they have been very slow and behind the scenes. We have a new top quality practice facility, play in a new state of the art stadium and have hired a new coach with deep ties and recruiting experience in the P5 and increased salaries at all staff levels? We  are at a point needing to put all of that together.  For 3 decades that has been a mystery for UNLV. Now new President, soon to be new AD, near new coach and staff, money and facilities.

About everything that can be done have been done. I guess sometime in a month or two when the new AD is hired we can start complaining about them being incompetent but other than that…

It's a combo of two things:

1) UNLV went D1 in 1978 & had an agreement with the old WAC to join, but there was a test run of 4 years 1978 to 1981 where UNLV would play a full WAC schedule but just wasn't eligible for a conference title.........the test was to see the fallout of Tarkanian's NCAA issues (UNLV nwas on NCAA probation following the 1977 final 4) - So the WAC which just lost ASU & UA to the PAC10 was looking to fill the void but UNLV had NCAA issues.........anyway by 1982 the WAC said NO to UNLV's joining the conference so UNLV was pretty much left with the only option of going to the PCAA

2) Once UNLV was parked in the PCAA / Big West.........the NCAA issues had cleared & BB was back on track in 1984 being #1 in the country but by 1986 & Harvey Hyde's issues the FB program was hit with forfeitures of games.......at that point the entire athletic focus was on the BB program and FB became an afterthought......CBS & ESPN were putting together UNLV matchups with national programs while FB was scraping along with Cal-State Fullerton........UNLV would give you FB tix if you bought UNLV BB scholarship donor tix..........by 1987 to 1991 UNLV BB was riding high as one of the top 5 programs in the nations and totally overshadowed UNLV FB .......it was hard to compare UNV BB playing deep into the NCAAT & playing top 25 national tv games while FB was playing Pacific & Long Beach St.

In short..........had the WAC invited UNLV as a member in 1982 I really think FB would have been much better off and BB would still have been very good

UNLV FB is in the best infrastructure & facilities condition it's ever had.............all that is left now is to recruit and win the games

Most everything is in place to turn this program around

Your basketball team was better before you got the "best infrastructure" that you've had for several years now.

UNLV has made exactly one good, BB hire since Tark.  Hopefully, Kevin makes it two, but we won't know for another year or two.  We're still waiting for good FB coach to arrive in vegas.  Some Rebel fans have just given up hope.  You can't really blame them.

You guys need to hire a real AD.  Other schools can do it.  Why can't vegas?

The AD hires haven't been overly great over the decades

UNLV has been in the MWC for over 20 years. The basketball program has gotten worse, and the football program has not advanced. At some point they need to stop worrying about conference decisions made 40 years ago, and do the work that it takes to maximize their current situation. As you said, they have great facilities now for both football and basketball, they should be one of the dominant teams in this league.

There's no worrying about the WAC thing 40 years ago - that was just a turning point for the FB program - Since 1996 when UNLV joined the WAC which got UNLV out of the Big West, things should have had some chance to improve...........but but it's been hit and miss in BB & FB has only had about 3 or 4 winning or .500 seasons.

Everything is in place now from a facilities standpoint...........it's time to get both going. Neither is in the shadow of the other anymore..............if anything the shadow is now cast by the VGK & Raiders.

And you are correct.........the location, local talent pool and everything else is in place...........time to make it happen

It is amazing that FB over 35 years could even sustain a decent run of 7-5, 8-4, 6-6, 5-7, 7-5, 8-4  type of run which would even be a step up over the the string of 1, 2 & 3 win disasters that have been the norm............FB has just been god awful

30 years since the Tark vs Maxon debacle. Since then we have had a run of presidents that could care less about sports or felt threatened by them like Maxon. If there was a president that got out of the way then we were saddled with an incompetent AD. Most of the time we had both but never did we have both positions filled by people that saw a value to invest seriously in sports.

We may at this point have a president  that sees reasons to seriously invest in the FB program. Now we’ll see if that is correct by the hiring of the new AD. It’s all about personnel now because everything else is ready and waiting.

Arroyo has improved recruiting by a bunch. Question is whether he and his staff know what to do with them. It will be an interesting year. We have a decidedly tough schedule which won’t lead to many or even any wins but will we play better, be more competitive showing signs of improvement or even capability within this staff? First week didn’t look good for them by leaving Rogers in that long considering how little he did through 3 1/2 quarters.

We have idiot AD's like Livengood & DRF who run off good coaches to hire 'their guy', who inevitibly is a total dumpster fire.

Half our fanbase are retard incels (see Rebelnet) who are hell bent on self sabotage and think Dave Rice and Jim Livengood were the best things to ever happen to UNLV.  Some of these incels still wear anti-TKM shirts and speak of her as being the great destroyer of UNLV athletics.  LMFAO.

A local media led by a midget schmuck idiot from San Diego who is perhaps the worst sports writer in America...who still sucks on Livengood's d!ck like he was the last bastion for UNLV athletics.

The list can go on from here....lots of issues.  But a retarded fan base and a retarded local press can be overcome by.....just winning some games and shutting them up.

True, our basketball team was good with the 6K Convention Center Rotunda but the T&M (completed in 1993) brought in huge crowds, lots of income and a national championship.

As the SEC has shown, more $ solves most problems.

UNLV football has sucked for years. I am always amazed when fans from other teams ask why Rebel football game attendance and support is lacking. Who wants to see their team get beaten every week?

The investment in football (new practice facility and new stadium) will hopefully get a quality  AD and better recruits that will result in more wins and more fans.
Time will tell.

T&M was completed in 1983, the first year that season tickets were available for many of us to buy.

And on top of that, since UNLV is a relatively new and a large university in the biggest metro area in the state, the board of regents treat it as some kind of tool in their short-sighted and misguided political aspirations resulting in this micromanaged/mismanaged nightmare rife with administrative incompetence.

UNLV  Athletics is the most mis-managed large D1 univesity (30k+ students) in the entire nation.   We have the best BB facilities on the west coast, Team USA +++++n practices here, and yet...we suck.   We have a top 3 NFL facility to play in now, we still suck.   We have the best facilities in the MWC, we still suck.  So much potential all the way around being wasted.

Someone needs to come in and lay the fckn hammer on this clownshow.  It won't change until that person shows up.  Who that is???  No clue.

And. There. It. Is.
