Conference Realignment thread

I think it's more of a game of chicken, to see who blinks first.  Reports (and that's all they are) are that UT is willing to finance OU's part of any buyout.  What may have gummed up the works and given OUT some incentive to hold out more is the breakdown in the playoff expansion talks.  Guess we will see.

There’s no way Texas gives OU 80+ million dollars.

Big-12: 8 -> 14 -> 12
MWC is safe.

"The Big 12 is engaged in plans to split into two seven-team divisions in football beginning in 2023 to temporarily restructure as a 14-team league as the realignment process unfolds, league sources tell CBS Sports. "

"Assuming BYU, Cincinnati, Houston and UCF join ahead of the 2023-24 athletic year, the league would be at 14 teams for two seasons in 2023 and 2024. The Big 12 would then shrink to 12 teams in football, playing in six-team divisions beginning in 2025."

Let's assume your source is reputable: is Gonzaga talking to just the MW or also the Big East or anyone else?

They've talked a few times but the issue is with other sports. Soccer, baseball, and etc don't wanna travel across the country on a weekly basis. But from what I've heard there might be some scheduling agreement though

Them, UMKC, UT-Arlington and another school have been pushing to become that 12th team in the conference. If UMKC is interested in leaving Summit, then maybe Horizon goes after them to remain at 12?

The biggest news is the 9 conference game schedule being continued.  Not huge news but good news as it will help with viewership/attendance to cut down on buy games/etc.  Always important with tv negotiations coming.

There is a high likelihood at the north/south divisions.  Dodd has some basis to his projections, this is a somewhat more likely breakdown of what to expect:

BIG 12 NORTH BIG 12 SOUTH
Cincinnati Baylor
BYU Houston
Iowa State TCU
Kansas Texas
Kansas State Texas Tech
Oklahoma UCF
Oklahoma State West Virginia

Only two guarantees, Texas and OU will be in opposite divisions and OSU and Baylor will be in opposite divisions.

edit: fwiw I think there’ll be texas teams in both divisions, but competitively it’ll be tough to switch out texas tech and Cincy.  Feel the geography will be gerrymandered

That's a Gerrymandered goat Phuck.

I’m curious what the Horizon League ends up doing. They have typically just poached from The Summit, but The Summit seems to have pulled a Sun Belt and become the better conference. I’m not sure if they’ll be able to convince a Summit school to leave.

UMKC is looking at leaving, they were petitioning to get into the Valley

No the only basketball school the conference would take is Gonzaga. And from my sources they're talking to each other

Are these your sources ?

I don't get why small B-Ball Schools go shopping for Conferences they are not regionally aligned with.

That is why was surprised at seeing UMKC name mentioned, they went into Summit for that reason because they felt more aligned in that conference.

Nope lol people within the athletic department

I figured you'd take it in good humor.

I would love to see the Zags having a BB scheduling arrangement with the MW ala ND FB.  I don't see the WCC letting go of their Tourney Credit ATM.

The Zags flirted with the MW enough to bend the WCC over a barrel. They're not giving up their Golden Goose either.

Losing BYU is gonna hurt the Conference, losing Gonzaga would be a near mortal death blow.

From what I've heard the higher ups at Gonzaga are worried about how much of a loss the TV contract will be once BYU leaves. Even though MW tv contract isnt the best it's still better than the WCC's. Plus they are starting to get worried about scheduling good OOC opponents as well. Apparently a lot of the teams like Duke, Texas Tech, and etc didn't wanna travel so far out west just to play a game against us. At least playing in the MWC will give us some decent teams to play against within the season.

I don't think they want to play in Spokane, not play Gonzaga. There is a huge difference in that, if they say let's play in Seattle they would probably be up for it. But also Duke doesn't travel much anyway I think their farthest OOC games are sometimes to NY

In the MWC the BB portion of our contract is about 20% of the total.  I would be fine giving Gonzaga a 50% share.  But I'm not emperor of the MWC.
