Did I hear a WOOSH?

Conference Realignment thread

Recommended Posts

Toledo has had like 16 winning seasons in a row in FBS already?  In terms of football quality, there aren't many other better options of schools who have sustained winning.  Northern Illinois is a good team who is at the edge of a bigger market.  They are at edge of the MAC geographic footprint and are also ambitious.

Texas St no doubt wants to wait for a P12 offer--but the P12 might be a bit paralyzed--they really want Memphis or an AAC school but seems like they can't afford them until they get the settlement money back from the MWC.

Texas State needs a travel partner that is close proximity. UTEP is on El Paso, Texas which is closer to New Mexico than San Antonio-Austin-Houston Areas.

Texas is so huge that some of the assumptions of "travel partners" or proximity that people make doesn't hold up.  For example it's closer to San Diego from El Paso Texas, than it is to Houston from El Paso Texas.  Not by much, but still the point stands.  Saying that UTSA would be a UTEP travel partner is like saying that USU would be a UNLV travel partner - it's about the same distance apart in both cases.

I'm glad you agree with me, Texas State is about and 1 hour driving time from UTSA and about 3 hours driving time to Sam Houston which is just north of Houston. However, UTEP is about 8.5 hours driving time to Texas State or UTSA and 11 hours driving time to Sam Houston. Compared to the extra expense of flying, schools like to save money using buses when to bring the athletes, coaches & equipment.

Whatever the two conferences do to fill out, industry sources agree those additions are going to be "dilutive." That is, not adding to the value of the league. UNLV AD Erick Harper provided a hint of what the Pac-12 is offering when he told CBS Sports last week that number was projected to be $10-$15 million per school annually.

That prompted this response from veteran Jim Williams, an Emmy-winning sports media consultant:

"From a television standpoint, who the heck is going to pay you [that] money?" Williams asked. "You took a conference [MWC] that was worth $5 million per school and you split it in half. No sense. They're not going to get that [$10-$15 million).

"How the hell does Oregon State and Washington feel as if they're entitled to big money?" Williams continued. "[Those leagues] don't have four time zones. They have two time zones where 22% of the country lives. I like watching Mountain West basketball and football, but not to the point where if I'm a media person I'm going to give you a check for $7 million or $8 million or $9 million dollars."

If the number is, in fact, $7-$9 million, one would have to question why Memphis might pay most of $25 million to take a lateral move.

Jim Williams is the same guy who claimed UConn was a lock for the Big 12, that Wazzu and OSU were getting legitimate interest from the Big 12, that the B1G was prioritizing Miami and UNC over Washington and Oregon, etc. He has been wrong every step of the way in realignment.

Hard to take his credentials seriously when his Twitter account is indistinguishable from the likes of MHver3.

Please let it be true! Go for the FCS BIG4 (Montana, MSU, SDSU and NDSU) would make the MWC strong!

I have to think these four are among the FCS schools they are looking at, plus perhaps Sac State and Davis.  I can't imagine they would take all or even most, but I could see 2 or 3 of them as potential, but there are still other options, including FBS options like NMSU or UTEP.  That said, if they don't add enough TV value that each share is significantly diluted, it is a tougher sell because that is what is driving everything now.

I'm not so sure. I haven't heard any rumors of FCS schools. It's looking more likely to me that they will add NIU and Toledo football only, and UTEP all sports.

I'll never agree to the MAC schools being better Football options then the Dakota States, both from a travel perspective, competitiveness, fan support etc. If they want CTZ Football only members the Dakota States are better options.

Sure. But this is not about travel, competitiveness, or the fans. It's about what schools move the needle for media partners.

I think that Snow Belt Conference with Idaho, the Montanas, Wyoming, Colorado State, and the Dakotas would be amazingly fun to watch. But the money they generated from media contracts would be abysmal so we'll never get to see it.

Just look at what decision would suck the most fun out of college athletics possible for the fans and students and you usually won't be too far wrong.
