If that hadn't been an overriding consideration they could have built a nice little academically-focused non-power Pac with the four MWC R1 research universities west of the Rockies (Utah State, Nevada, UNLV, Hawaii) plus San Diego State (which will be an R1 soon) plus three of the UC schools in the Big West (UC Davis, UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine). That would have given them nine members for football and twelve for Olympic sports, reasonable travel, and a presence in eight top-100 MSAs (#2 Los Angeles, #13 San Francisco-Oakland, #18 San Diego, #28 Sacramento, #29 Las Vegas, #36 San Jose, #55 Honolulu, #96 Spokane). The remaining seven MWC schools could have bounced back with some combination of the Montanas, UTEP and NMSU and not missed a beat. With Boise State, Fresno State, Air Force and Wyoming still in the conference the MWC would probably have ended up as strong or stronger in football than the rebuilt Pac. Would definitely be more likely for CAL and Stanford to have accepted but I still think theyd go to the ACC. That being said as a Montana fan I'd love to be apart of that version of the MWC: BSU.........WYO.......AF..............*UTEP Fresno.....CSU.....*Montana....*NMSU SJSU.......NM.......*MSU..........*Sac State

I also think OSU will do better than WSU but this could be the start of a very steep decline for these schools. I'm not surprised they are pursuing every angle they can. Stop making sense. Oregon and Washington withdrew from the Pac-12, essentially ending the conference as we have known it, on Aug. 4, 2023. That's still less than a year ago. The Washington State Supreme Court declined to review a lower court's decision that granted control of the Pac-12 board of directors to Oregon State and Washington State on Dec. 15, 2023. That's just over eight months ago. OSU/WSU reached a settlement agreement with the departing 10 schools on March 25. That only four months ago tomorrow. "Years-long pity party?" Hardly. Anyone (on either side) who rushes into a decision of this magnitude is a fool. Everything I wrote in my previous post is 100% accurate. Mr. Steed, if you are really an attorney, I'm glad you're not working for me.

Why get all personal? You are entitled to your opinion, as am I. And, just cause you don’t like it, does not mean it is not true. And…speaking for the powers that be in the MWC that are pretty clearly fed up, Gloria just said it better than I. ———- While an invite to join the Mountain West would be a major sign of relief for Washington State and Oregon State, MWC Commissioner Gloria Nevarez says she ” does not see a need” to expand membership. “When I first started, everyone was growing to 14, 16, and I thought maybe that’s where we need to be,” Nevarez said. “I’m not seeing a need now. Certainly, if there’s an opportunity to make us better, I would absolutely chase that down. But I’m feeling pretty good about where we are.” While the road ahead for the remaining members of the Pac-12 is still rocky at best, OSU and Wazzu’s disappointing ballad continues. ——— Sounds like I am right — OSU/WSU outwore their welcome and pissed off the wrong folks. I agree it sucks (I was hoping for a full merger there), but that is where it is at.
Beaver-Poke
You're the one who called me a liar by saying, "Everything you said is untrue." That nothingburger of a story reads to me as if both sides are taking their time to make sure a merger would be right for both parties. A perfectly sensible approach. GCU doesn't have Gonzaga's reach and I don't know how much weirdness there remains with the for-profit stuff. Their huge enrollment and expanded footprint does make them worth discussing.

Zero chance of that happening. It would kill the Hawaii football program, perhaps not immediately but eventually. We're already having trouble scheduling OOC games despite the Hawaii and Week Zero exemptions. That's why we're scaling back to playing 12 games per season instead of the 13 we've played historically. No one wants to travel to Honolulu after their conference season begins. With so much CFP money on the table the stakes are too high. If we were indy it would be well-nigh impossible to schedule any home games after early October. It’s been 15 years since a power conference school played a game in Honolulu that wasn’t in August or September (Wisconsin, in December 2009). Moreover, other than this season’s Washington State game that got added to our schedule due to the MWC-Pac scheduling agreement, all of Hawaii’s currently contracted future games against power conference schools will be played in August or September: https://fbschedules.com/ncaa/hawaii/ If not for our MWC affiliate membership it would be virtually impossible for Hawaii to land home games against FBS competition that would be played later than October 1st. Convert’s comment just isn’t very smart. You typically aren’t going to see power teams playing at Hawaii in “ the winter” because they are balls deep in conference play if their season isn’t over already. OOC is mostly wrapped up in September. Not the sharpest tool in the shed.
