Hard to imagine them surviving but we've thought this before. If the Utah schools get an invite to the Summit, then I think the WAC is dead. If the three stay with Cal Baptist, somehow (I don't know how entirely) they will keep the league alive. Central Washington and Western Oregon D2 football are sending their teams to Texas to play. If Utah Valley adds football (as hinted at recently in the Deseret News) that at least gets them six FCS teams. Find a couple of other schools in Colorado and California that could possibly move up??? I keep hearing that North Dakota State is looking for a new league (evil grin).

If the Summit were to add the Utah trio, I wonder if they'd have any interest in breaking from the MVFC and starting football? Initially it would be the Dakota 4 + SUU/Utah Tech. Perhaps Northern Colorado would be interested as well?
jdgaucho
@VandalPride97, I want to be the 1st poster to say "Welcome back to the Big West, Idaho!" .... even if it's only men's golf https://govandals.com/news/2024/5/15/idaho-joins-big-west-for-mens-golf.aspx That conference lineup looks much better with a second member from outside California.

They're raking in 12.5 times what a MWC school gets. Hey if it's market value, it's market value but I've completely quit giving a shit about those guys. 4 1

None of these schools have ever had to scrape a budget together with dimes, nickels and pennies. And they definitely have it rough trying to get to the bottom of these problems. Lol. “But within this oceanside luxury resort, among its carpeted hallways, inside its spacious convention space and around its marbled lobby bar, there exists grime. There is unsaid animosity here, uncomfortable squirming and awkward moments. There are eye-rolls, glares and even the occasional public barb” 1 1

Agreed but for some reason, I am now rooting for complete chaos with these P4 conferences as they slowly realize they have ruined college sports... 3

I wonder if the Big West would consider adding Cal Baptist? Would allow them to get to 12 without upsetting the UC/CSU balance.

alum93
When Washington buys a USU transfer for $2M to play basketball the system is broken. When NC and FSU complain they can't compete while getting $50M from the ACC deal, the system is broken. The BiG, SEC, B12, and ACC need to figure out who is going to make the final cut and break away already. Let them compete with $100M+ athletic budgets, insane NIL deals, and kids that transfer and go to the highest bidder every offseason. Let the next level of schools, currently known as G5, have their own playoff and stop pretending we are all playing the same game. If P4 goes to P3 or P2, so be it.

One of the biggest lures for me for college sports has always been little guys competing and beating the big guys. The NCAA Tourney has milked that cow for decades and it worked. Much more parity in hoops but even that has changed. Sports are a huge mental release for fans. College sports fans have been more loyal than pro sports fans IMO. Schools are pressuring more fans to open up their wallets with NIL just to keep their head above water. On top of season tickets, booster clubs, gear, parking, beer and hot dogs. If the split comes, I think it will be the straw that broke the camel’s back. Unfortunately I think we’re headed that way. Completely ruined. At least they can finally start being honest and call the G5 the Farm League. 1

Likely true but the direction this is going appears to be unsustainable and it's not clear exactly how pro college football and basketball will mesh with the actual pro sports. So if it doesn't go well... meaning if they lose viewers they will eventually figure it out.

MisterSpartan
Realignment destroyed the landscape of college football and college sports in general, a long time ago. Obviously all about money, but should be more about the athlete and the success of programs. I mean a lot of teams were already struggling and will do so even more due to even more powerhouse programs coming in(Vandy in the SEC for instance). Granted, they will not play Texas and Oklahoma all the time but point still stands. It is going to get worse before it gets better, of that I have no doubt. Tar Heel basketball fan myself and in my heart I do not believe they will ever leave the ACC nor do I want them too. However, who the heck knows what the future will bring with them and say FSU and Clemson. All programs like SJSU can do and basically every other MWC program do is just go with the flow, be as succesful as we can, and hope for the best. We can't change anything no matter how much we bitch.

Like I said, this thread has been all over the place. This anti-trust case gives me a little hope in that all of the reporting is fairly specific about the "most powerful" conferences making players employees. We're not in that bucket. That would likely indicate a very solid split between academic conferences that want to play football at the highest level that they're capable of, and the athletic conferences that want to hire athletes and hope the athletes take school seriously enough to make the degree worth a crap. It looks imminent to me, and I'm excited for the MWC to be in the "academic" tier. As an aside, speaking with an acquaintance who is a UGA alum and booster, he reports that most of the folks he knows are very upset with the new direction, and would also prefer to be in the "academic" tier. I don't think that even most P4 fans are on board with this arms race.
