Hearing rumors…

Are you guys ready to welcome Hawaii as a full member of the MWC?

Not really.  I like Hawaii, and would love to see their VB in the conference, but the travel.  Yes, it's a real issue.  Maybe not for the coastal schools so much, but ex-CSU AD's have made a point of complaining about the Hawaii travel for football.  Jack Graham stated that it wasn't fair to the students and he hated it.  I don't see it getting better when you throw in BB, VB, Softball, Track, etc.  Too much travel in the AAC was part of what led to CSU turning their offer down, Hawaii certainly isn't closer.

That would be nice! Wonder if they would do well in basketball.

All our oly sports both men and women would contend except men’s basketball initially. I’d give the men’s BB program maybe 3 years to rise up to MWC standards.

So @Warbow, when do we say aloha and mahalo to the Bows? 2026?

I'll miss our matchups.  :crying:

My guess is it will be in 2026 when our TV deal with spectrum gets renewed. Also when the PAC-2 has to make some decisions.

For Hawaii to get involved...wonder if the politicians is trying to scrap the new stadium project because of the fire in Maui?

A bill was approved a few weeks ago on the House side of the Hawaii legislature to kill funding for NASED (the New Aloha Stadium Entertainment District project).  If enacted the bill would direct part of the $400 million in already approved NASED funding to Maui relief, but more than half -- reportedly $277 million -- would be given to UH to expand Ching Field into an FBS-sized stadium.

However the bill is likely to die on the Senate side of the legislature, where there's more support for NASED.  Apparently the Senate leadership is routing the bill for review and approval through five different committees.  That's tantamount to killing it since there's little likelihood that all five committees will find time before the legislature adjourns on May 3rd to hold hearings on the bill and vote to move it to the Senate floor.

I think the important takeaway here for the MWC is that whatever transpires, the Hawaii state government clearly understands that the current 15K erector-set stadium in Manoa isn't an acceptable long-term solution for UH football.  At some point the program will have access to a decent facility, either as part of the NASED development or on campus.

I agree on the timing, but let's keep in mind that this actually happening is far from a sure thing.  All we're going on right now is an unconfirmed report from someone we think is an insider, who says UH has had discussions about this with the MWC and been told nothing will be decided until after things are worked out with OSU and WSU.

The only reason this is news is that it appears the trial balloon wasn't immediately shot down by the MWC.  It could easily be shot down later.

The travel concern is mutual.  However if Hawaii were upgraded to a full member in conjunction with or following a merger/reverse merger with OSU and WSU, the conference would have 14 full members, which is enough to set up non-football scheduling in a way that minimizes travel between Hawaii and the Front Range schools.

For example basketball could have a 19-game schedule, with everyone playing home-and-homes against six members and single games against the other seven.  In that scenario the Mountain time zone teams would only have to travel to Hawaii every other year, and it could be a single-game trip rather than a two-game swing (no stopover coming or going).

Slightly off topic, but it won't surprise me if Hawaii was lukewarm about Washington State and Oregon State putting their other sports in the BW, which is why they're going to the WCC for the next two years.  As I told you before, I believe UH's mindset is that until they leave, they don't want anyone else from outside California coming in. Just a hunch

A shame that an opportunity to strengthen your current league was lost. OSU and WSU would have added an at-large bid across all sports.

Nah, I think if the BWC had a realistic chance to land WSU and OSU for a couple of years, UH would have been all for it.  Flight times from Honolulu to Oregon and Washington aren't much longer than from Honolulu to California.  I know Hawaii fans would have loved to see WSU and OSU teams coming to town for conference games/matches.

My guess is that WSU and OSU opted for the WCC over the BWC because the WCC is much stronger in basketball, and because it was a slam dunk travel-wise.  Gonzaga is a perfect travel partner for WSU, and Portland is a perfect travel partner for OSU.  Win-win.

Being that all new members to the BWC wouldn’t receive travel subs from Hawaii, I would think Hawaii would be all in for the add-ins.

Four of the WCC teams finished with a sub-200 NET, and LMU was at 199. Pacific had the nation's fourth lowest at 359 and Portland just missed being a sub-300 team.  Half the league was poor.

OSU and WSU will be playing in those gyms too

Will you guys re-up with Spectrum?  The Islands are obviously unique but having games as PPV is tough.

Are there any other options that might pay comparatively without being PPV?

Moot point now, since they're WCC bound.

Agree but I don’t think full membership to the MWC was ever pushed by the previous administration to even gage their interest. Matlin and Lassner were all in for the Big West so I don’t think they even tried. They were content with the financial aspect of it more than anything else. Now with both of them out the door soon, Angelos is listening to what the fans want first before the bottom line.

Can someone be so kind as to remind me the monetary penalties the Pac 2 agreed to with the MW in regards to poaching MW schools.  I vaguely recall it being something like $18mm per school if done after the two year agreement expired and twice that if before two years?

I can see Hawaii spitting the Spectrum TV contract into 2 different contracts, one for MWC sports and the other for Big West sports. Right now our Big West sports are getting the shaft as it’s part of the overall contract. Which means the MWC is benefiting from the spectrum contract right now as Hawaii spectrum contracts includes ALL sports.

By spitting the contract into 2 separate contracts Hawaii would probably then opt to receive their MWC portion of its TV deal instead of the spectrum football portion and still collect on the BW portion. Right now Hawaii has opted to receive the spectrum TV monies (which includes BW sports) instead of a MWC TV deal share.

If they do that I don’t foresee any PPV football games being aired.

MWC commish has said she would like to expand beyond 14

isn't the Spectrum TV $$ worth as much or slightly more than the MWC media payout?
