Conference Realignment thread

No I'd be correct at this point.   The ACC "at this point" is a better, more prestigious conference than the BIG12, which is why Stanford and Cal wouldn't even consider the BIG12, but joined the ACC which is miles away.

Trying to be objective:

(1) ACC has much higher academic reputation than the BIG12 "at this point".    Is it even debatable?

(2) ACC "at this point" has more impressive programs at the top.   Clemson, Florida State, etc

(3) The difference in money between the BIG12 and ACC is not significant enough to matter.

My guess is that West Virginia and Cincinatti would prefer to be in the ACC than the BIG12 right now.   Can you name a single ACC team that would prefer to be in the BIG12?  Sure, the ACC might lose a few programs in the future.  But that is hypothetical right now.

Tv viewers don't tune in to root for Academic Institutions.

They root for the School they attended or they want to see an appealing ballgame.

Cal vs Georgia Tech may have been an attractive Rose Bowl 125 years ago. Not so much anymore.

I'll put it another way @Brew_Poke.

Currently you need seven full members for a basketball conference.  I don't believe 818's scenario of a Cal-led West coast Ivy League would work without Nevada or Hawaii. There simply aren't enough institutions for Berkeley that are available and acceptable to them in-state, Oregon and Washington. Nevada and Hawaii are state flapships. Much easier to stomach aligning with.

There are plenty more CSU campuses that the remaining seven Big West members could backfill with.

Like San Diego, Fresno and San Jose right?  :hmmm: You're all charter members. And you did say "the MWC IS history, a few members just don't know it yet."

It was the Mtn West that took a pass on Wazzu & BeaverSt BB teams for 2024-'25 & 2025-'26.  The Pac-2 had no choice but to play w/the 'Zags, St Mary's + Friends.

If Pac-2 FB merges w/the MWC, our conf will accept their hoops teams.

FWIW...this yr, Wazzu would be competitive in hoops.  Los Beavs, not so much.

There were rumblings that George Kliavkoff was trying to grease the skids with Gloria Nevarez for OSU and WSU (and perhaps even California and Stanford at the time) to merge with the MWC 12. As such, if the ACC didn't get NC State U to change their vote for expansion, the Pac 4 becomes the Pac 16. George Kliavkoff felt he could keep the CFP Autobid with that 16-team group but Stanford didn't want to elevate the MWC California State Schools with that association. So now they have to fly their volleyball team to Wake Forest and George K is out of a job.

Your post (if true) is the precursor to my post about the 2-yr stop gap deal you linked above.

What color is the sky in world where GK can pitch Cal-Ford playing in a conf w/CSU-San José, FresNO, Boise CC, UNLV, etc... w/a straight face?

OSU and Wazzu are going to pursue the following in order, regardless of how likely it is or not:

1-Join or buy their way into the ACC or Big12 (banking on ACC collapse)

2-Poach teams from the MWC and probably AAC, try to get Calford back, keep P5 Status

3-Go Independent, maintain P5 Status

4-Full merger with the MWC

The most likely scenario is obviously #4 and the one I personally think is going to happen eventually. As a Montana fan I'm hoping for #2 as it would give us the best chance to move up with MSU.

I thought the Administrations of MSU &/or UM didn't want to jump up to D-1A.

Has their position on the topic changed recently?

The United Athletic Conference plans to move up to FBS at the "earliest possible date". Montana and Montana State should try to go with them.

You're kidding, right?

If serious, do you think Utah Tech & Friends have the resources to meet the D-1A requirements for FB?

There was no way that Stanford and Cal would have accepted sharing a conference with Fresno State, San Jose State and Boise State.  None, zero, nada.  That Kliavkoff would try to promote such a thing, even momentarily, underlines his incompetence.

He would have had a better chance pushing for Stanford, Cal, OSU and WSU to convert the Pac to a non-football conference and bring in some combination of the Big West UC schools, Gonzaga, San Diego State, and Hawaii.  It would have lost its status as an FBS conference and CFP member but the FBS members could have played as independents with a joint scheduling agreement.

Such a conference would have been a multi-bid contender in basketball and baseball, nationally competitive in other Olympic sports, and dominating in several niche sports in which Stanford, Cal, the UCs and Hawaii excel and in which USC and UCLA would probably have been willing to sign on as affiliate members (e.g. men's volleyball, beach volleyball, and men's and women's water polo).

Not true at all.  Visit an Utah Tailgate anytime. I love silly stereotypes.

My bad, I read "Utah" as referring to the average citizen of the state, not UU. Not SLC, for that matter. As an example, my Mormon friend who lives there can drink me under the table and nobody's ever called me a teetotaler.

That point makes some sense but neither of those flagship universities has academics even as good as SDSU's. Hell, maybe Cal would want to fill those last two slots with Land Grants that Cal long partnered with: OSU and WSU. Both are much closer to Berkeley than Honolulu is.

It's humorous how much people (myself included) proclaim they know things about realignment.  The last several years should have taught us we're all Jon Snow.  I'm sure people said Texas will never give up the Longhorn Network or the P12 will never collapse or SDSU will never be in the PAC.  Wait that last one is true..

So, WSU was/is basically a football school but some of that might have to be changed. Personally I don't like basketball schools (more exclusive, less of a chance for comraderie..) but you don't control chips if they fall as they may...

Cough bball isn't great really, but was the football really that much better?

There is a market for hoops on the palouse and if wsu can learn to dominate its neighbor ie the zags, then it could be a new baseline from which to carry forth coug athletics. I mean, if Gonzaga is the standard, then it's an ambitious standard to beat.

I think wsu shedding its little brother rep is a positive.

And if the pac legacy can be transferred forward then the mwc is a power conference, especially in basketball and more and more in football.

What is a power conference anyway? It's all discretionary..

I'd say def poach Montana and MSU, and wait for Calford to come back, and rename the Cali city schools. San Diego is not a state. Call them Academies, the 2nd hand embarrassment is hecka cringe 😬

Eventually Calford will leave the acc...and then the huskies and ducks will be left on an island of irrelevancy. I mean where else would they go? Classist perhaps, they should just join the Ivy's like I told them but that's not their level sorry...ACC lol, watch that domino fall. They really are so stupid, I've lost respect for them not for any other reason other than they make stupid decisions apparently. So much for standardized testing lol

I think it'll end up being a new pac of about 16 or so, in 2 years.

In any case, it's about championships..is WSU closer to winning a natty in bball or football because of all this?

Yes or no? I wonder what people think..

So I guess WSU is now slowly becoming a basketball school? Well, the football part of its history.. perhaps that's just better left in its history.

I want winners!

Recruiting as far as WSU is concerned becomes more challenging, but hey life isn't always easy. I would say that the recruiting map needs to change. First and foremost, WSU is definitely the best school in its region, probably for at least an 8hr radius. It also has a huge presence in Hawaii, it recruits well internationally, but that could still be improved. And then it's Canada and Alaska, and down towards Vegas and towards Kentucky. Then poach from the East. But Cali? Cali is oversaturated.

Where are these Canadian bball/football players anyway? They should be like 1/4 of the student athletic body because why not?

WSU really needs to step up its hockey game because for me, that'd be the next best step.

Who makes these decisions lol, I need a suggestion box.

Cougs have 9 lives, we'll survive. That's the school spirit. Fight fight fight for WA state..

Always a hope at the school for those who keep hopeful.

People who refused to give up and ended up wherever just trying to keep their hopes and dreams alive.

I wonder what the culture is like at other schools?

If you come to the pnw it's not hard to spot the cougs lol, we like to take our chances and sometimes it pays off lol

Best school academically or athletically?  I think Boise pretty much trumps you in athletics.  I know UW trumps you in both.  Just exactly how many schools are there in an 8 hour radius of Pullman and how big is the bong you're smoking?

Academically obviously. First, Boise isn't even a state. And 2nd go look at those pretty crimson and gray bricks.. especially in late fall. It's like a dream lol

It's just a good place to be if you want a quiet place to study, grow up in, and a place from which you can ease into adulthood. And 3rd in the fields that its known for, WSU is more than competitive...

And also fifth, sixth and 7th, across the board it has good athletics..idk track and field and baseball and volleyball..idk what else..

Why are you trying to knock what is obviously a good school?

I'm not saying it's Harvard. But that's like saying west isn't east.

Stop hurting nice people lol

Also, drugs? lol party hard, work harder. What is a non sequitur? I'm literally at work right now, drinking coffee. The mug's pretty big, the coffee pot is bigger. I wonder what the letters on the mug mean though hmmm...

I'm proud of my alma mater, so what?

College town, USA. No shame in it lol. Stop trying to make everything corporate. We'll keep our traditions lol

Y'all are just jealous, trying to break my spirit..I'd do it again. This coug could have gone to the Ivys but he was just a little bit too smart for that.

I'm just glad I never applied to UW. I wouldn't have made the right decision..

I really should show you all my academic profile. It's quite entertaining lol

Quality over rep. I thought I'd transfer out but hey, Pullman is a majestic place and it's the community that makes it so...I was happy. So stop trying to make me unhappy.

Taking all our happiness away..vampires I tell you what..

I don't even know why I'm so defensive about this lol

It feels like the world is trying retroactively to make me live regretfully.

Where is my garlic 🧄*hsssss* 🤞

Also we are 5 and 1 vs Boise in football, as I thought.

Do you know what you are talking about?

Use your brain bruh

What is the agenda you are pushing? Find some semblance of critical thinking somewhere..you're being a parrot for a national narrative that simply isn't true.

Your brain is washed sorry
