The old farts will have to die off and new blood come in with different priorities before that would ever happen. That’s why, football-only. Think football attendance revenue. Who cares if that person/family drove from Fresno to the Rose Bowl to play against UCLA vs a person/family flying in from Colorado or Oklahoma. $70 is $70. The money part might be different for media rights revenue, but constant and heavy marketing touch points with close rivalry games, means greater market penetration. Ok you want to make the lower academic institutions partial Football-only members, ok you get to keep your exclusivity. It’s like the Hawaii high schools, public schools vs private schools. They got beef with each other and fanbases loved it. That was the heyday. Make California Football Great Again (MCFGA; horrible acronym). CKS007
Due to a lack of options, the Big Ten is avoiding expansion talk. Big Ten, with lack of options, right to avoid expansion talk for now (msn.com)

This would be the opposite way of thinking, and keep their footprint tighter. I find San Diego State to be accretive to this strategy from a fan base strategy long term. The P12 invite could really boost things in California (and the Phoenix market) regarding rivalries, cross attendance, water cooler talk. Make California great again for college football. So think a step ahead. Instead of far flung conferences chasing eyeballs and then like the WAC’s pods, and downsizing due to Tulsa and Rice having little connection with Hawaii and Fresno State, for example. Chase and win hearts! I run a YouTube channel and an important metric is viewer retention. Double down in California. Sure, go football-only/upgrade the Big West with SDSU added. I love you. 1 Quote "Make like a tree and scram" - Rosegreen Your administration is the reason why our basketball league is bleeding out currently. If you didn't insist on San Jose being in the MWC, so you guys would have someone that votes similar to SDSU, every team in the MWC wouldn't have to play 2 games vs. a team with a 330 RPI ranking EVERY season. You guys are as stupid as you are desperate. - Cowboy Junky

The presidents of the PAC-12 don't want football-only members, and certainly not from academically inferior schools. You don't seem to understand how upidy and elitist their attitudes are regarding academics. To most if not all, still, the presidents think of it as an academic conference first. So if you pass the academic test, and pass the athletics test with success and good TV numbers, then you have a chance to get in. That's just how the conference has been for decades.

You are on the money though, the PAC Presidents are snobs, they won’t do anything that may tarnish their perceived reputation.

That just may happen, but a healthy PAC12 is good for college football. If the PAC12 ever folds that would be bad for the sport. I think that would also be very detrimental to the MWC. But if they don’t get over themselves they will slowly slide closer to the MW than the rest of the P5. Exhibit A is not adding BYU as a football only. They can feel good about who they associate with but when people watch sports they don’t care about anything but being entertained
raadsel
2 hours ago, SparkysDad said: I tend to think this has a lot more to do with the NIL than people are giving it credit for. I mean, how's a potential starting QB on a Big 12 team going to generate a $1,000,000 in endorsements in the midwest? A White Castle deal? Texas and OU need to keep recruiting at the highest level to maintain their football cred and status. I kind of think that the other conferences won't feel like they absolutely have to expand to 16 (maybe the Big 10) but the Pac 12 and the ACC can maintain current numbers and actually have an easier path to the larger National Championship field and won't lose money by maintaining the status quo in their conferences. Regardless, with Texas and OU being what they are, the SEC SEC SEC is the clear winner and whoever's left in the B12 are the definitive losers. I also think that if Texas and OU go to the SEC, no other football conference will come close to the power and finances of the SEC for a long, long time. The Big 10 could potentially get to 16 but no programs that they could add (Notre Dame maybe?) come close to the value of the SEC additions. Two issues with your post -- first, I'm not aware of any White Castle's in the current Big 12 "territory," though I guess there could be in West Virginia. If you wanted to make the joke, you should have used Sonic (headquartered in Oklahoma City). You could have even used Whataburger. As for endorsement deals, I think you forget just how large Texas is and how many companies are headquartered there -- with more moving every year. Sure, Tesla (moving to Austin) is not likely to pay sponsorship money, but you still have American Airlines, ExxonMobile (and about 5 other major oil companies), Oracle, Dell, AT&T, etc.
