Conference Realignment thread

Recommended Posts

For all of the people that keep suggesting that the MW adds Gonzaga, why would Gonzaga make that move?

Why would they give up their stable, like minded peer institution conference in which they have considerable influence and power over, to move to the MW which at this time is unstable and there are a lot of questions regarding membership?

Aren't they the ones who reached out to MW last time around?  They must have their reasons

After AFA & CSU leave the MWC, there will be nine basketball members and adding Gonzaga will be a huge overall upgrade for basketball.

Them staying in the WCC would be a surprise at this point.

When the MW didn't appear to be as unstable.  I'm sure the Zags want no part of a MW without SDSU.

They also could have just been using the MW for leverage as the WCC gave them concessions to stay.

And they got a sweeter deal from the WCC and stayed.  Now the MWC may be losing CSU and AF, and possibly Boise and SDSU within 2 years per all the recent rumors.  Seems like a heck of a risk to move now for Gonzaga, and certainly more than when they were considering the change before.

I disagree, their OOC is about as good as you will find, they get ranked #1 preseason, get the best MTE's, and are recruiting at an elite level while in the WCC.  BYU didn't make that happen, it is just their growth.  They don't need to come over, especially when our institutional make up is completely different and theirs aligns well with the WCC.

They wouldn't come.  Suggesting they would, is about like suggesting the AAC would absorb the B12's leftover 8.

Addressing the MW point of view:
You're seeing how it is now. Not what it could likely be.

If Air Force, CSU, SDSU, and Boise are gone, Wyoming, Utah State, and NMSU are all basically on their own island.

The proposed Texas backfill has practically the same distance away (except UTEP) as NDSU.

There's not going to be that big of a difference to Fresno if they'd be going to UTSA or NDSU in flight miles.

The only difference would be that NDSU would have a packed house and fans that watch the game.

Addressing the NDSU point of view:

They fly quite a lot already. They just flew to Maryland. They'll fly to Ohio and Illinois this year too. They already fly in an even lower revenue conference with fans that care a lot less than a gutted MWC.

Been saying this under my @Cowboy account, and other accounts.  North Dakota State on deck

We would have to be turned down by a whole lot of programs before we looked to NDSU as an addition.  Honestly, I doubt NDSU would be the first FCS school we'd contact.

UC Davis, both Montana schools, and South Dakota State would probably get calls before NDSU did.  And before we even contacted FCS programs we'd have to get turned down by UTEP and other FBS schools in TX.

NDSU fans are barking up the wrong tree.  We would probably stay at 8 or 9 teams rather than add FCS schools, who add no value, other than being a warm body.

There'd be no reason for them to join.  In that scenario MW hoops drops below the WCC, even without Provostan, in basketball strength.

California grew 6% in the last decade. In the last decade we added two Montana's or one Idaho.  We are losing people to internal migration and our share of the total US population is shrinking as a result of faster growth in Texas and other states but the population continues to increase due to births and immigration.

Yeah I hear that argument a lot, but even the state dept. of finance said we lost 180,000 people last year. Some “experts” were expecting us to lose two congressional seats!

New Mexico State is already on an island on their own.

NDSU could be the new Boise State. They've done well on establishing their brand - even from a FCS platform.

Why not give them a shot?

I'm sure this has been mentioned in this behemoth of a thread but I'm too lazy to look for it. Do we know if our leadership has reached out to SMU or Tulsa or anyone from the AAC?

AAC fans are acting like they just checkmated the MWC. lol

As I've said, the idiots on the AAC board have no idea how much of a negative effect Air Force can have on conference Olys. I haven't kept up with it but as of a few years ago, AFA had won like two MWC titles in Oly sports. Ever. So when you're at or near the top of the conference in hoops and lose in Colorado Springs, it's devastating to your NCAA at large chances and hurts your seeding if you do get in.

And those idiots have no idea about playing at Coco Springs. AFA uses that Princeton offense that can be difficult to defend AND those idiots will see their teams playing at altitude there and in Ft. Collins for the first time ever. It will be great when, not if, Temple or Tulsa or whomever are on the bubble and then don't get in simply because they lost to a terrible AFA team in Colorado.
