Conference Realignment thread

An industry source told The Athletic that BYU’s ESPN games generally garner bigger audiences than the remaining Big 12 schools in comparable windows and could increase their per-school TV revenue by about $2 million annually in the Big 12’s next deal.

I don't think it will be quite as interesting as you suspect.

The AAC will take 3 Sun Belt schools and UAB with perhaps 1 of the 2 south Florida schools (from CUSA).  They may of may not take a pay cut but I expect they will have a small pay cut.

I am not sure we will lose anyone but if we do it may be Boise in which case we will also have a small pay cut unless we can pick up UTSA. Perhaps even if we pick up UTSA.

If Boise goes to the B12 which I see as improbable then the AAC will also lose Memphis which will further weaken them.

In any case I do not see SDSU going anywhere however they would then have both the best basketball and best football teams in the conference.  But it might not be much of a conference.  However the AAC would not be much of a conference either.

This makes too much sense to, A) happen, and; B) be on this board! Well done!

Too bad the Alabama-Auburn rivalry ended in 1981 when Bama won their 9th straight.

The Ohio State-Michigan rivalry never really started since Michigan won 13 of the first 15 games.  The other two games were ties.  Michigan was 8-1-1 in the 10 games through 1997.  And Michigan still has the overall advantage - 58-51.

In the 90s, UCLA won eight straight against USC, effectively ending that rivalry, too.

Georgia Tech also took out Georgia in eight straight games - guess that's not a rivalry.

Notre Dame won 12 of 13 against USC (the other game being a tie) in the 80s and 90s.  So that one wasn't a rivalry even before USC won 8 straight from 2002-2009.

Florida won 9 straight against Florida State from 1968-1976.  Not a rivalry.

By the time BYU had 3 wins in their series, Utah had already accumulated 34.  Between 1972 and 1992, BYU went 19-2 including individual streaks of 9, 6, and 4 games.  Since then, Utah holds a 19-7 advantage.

College football rivalries are often cyclical.  Just because one of the teams went on a streak doesn't necessarily mean it's no longer a rivalry.

After Utah won the 1971 game, stretching their streak to 4 games and their overall record in the series to 38-5-4, I doubt there were many people that anticipated that Utah would lose 19 of the next 21 games against BYU.  Just because Utah has won the last nine doesn't necessarily mean they'll win the next one.

I love the new streak.  I'm counting it as two games after they forfeited the game in 2020.

In other interesting news this morning, the Pac-12 apparently gave serious consideration to inviting TCU and Houston before announcing it is not pursuing expansion at this time:

According to sources close to this latest conference round of major conference re-alignment, the Pac-12 targeted both the University of Houston and TCU as its preferred expansion candidates.

Both schools were considered desirable by the league because of quality athletic departments in schools that are located in major metropolitan markets in the central time zone.

The Pac-12’s formal extension of the invitation to Houston and TCU may simply be a delayed formality. The Pac-12’s media rights deal with ESPN and Fox Sports expires in the summer of 2023. It is expected that new Pac-12 commissioner George Kliavkoff will want to do something to increase the value of the league for a bigger media right’s package; that would include expanding the conference into major TV markets located in the central time zone.

Houston is the fourth largest city in the United States, and Pac-12 officials regard TCU covering all of the Dallas-Fort Worth market. DFW is the fifth-largest media market in the U.S., and Houston is eighth.

Houston was originally approached about joining the league in men’s basketball and football only, but that proposal was a no-go.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/sources-houston-tcu-were-close-110000556.html

This may be why the Big 12 is hinting at possible further expansion down the line.  If the Pac-12 circles back and invites TCU and Houston a year or two from now, the Big 12 will need two more additions to backfill.

We just back fill with BSU, SDSU, UNLV, NM or CSU Same or better conference.
