Restaurant and hotels worker quitting in record numbers

For tipped workers, $3.15/hr. Some states like Louisiana, it's as low as $2.30/hr.

We rely solely on tips to make a living. Our paychecks are negative, meaning our wages don't cover our taxes and rather than getting a refund every year, most of us owe.

Your employer is paying you less by using the tip credits. Minimum wage under the tip credit is $3.35 with a tip credit against the wage of $3.90 to meet the Federal minimum wage balance of $7.25. That's a really scummy practice in my opinion.

For sure. If I work a shift and no one comes in or I don't earn tips, then my employer is obligated to pay me the federal $7.50/hr.

I think, therefore I'm.

I couldn’t handle that stress. Especially if I have a bad night and get stiffed by an ahole then I’d be worried about making it up on another shift.

It all evens out. For the most part I've learned to get over the assholes and shitty tippers. Good people and great tippers make up for it. But there are still bad nights that make me want to rage quit and this last year has been extra enraging.

I think, therefore I'm.

I never understood how food service workers put up with the pay/conditions in the first place. If wages and prices must go up then they will. Free market and all that

If you’re smart you work someplace that doesn’t get slow, or you’re senior enough to only work the busy nights.

Back when I lived in Key West there were bartenders at Sloppy Joe’s working 4 nights a week making 100k a year.

I still average $40/hr in tips so there's money to be made. Though that kind of money is increasingly not worth the shit you have to deal with.

I’m surprised bartenders haven’t been replaced by robotic machines. You type in your order and they mix the drink and pop it out of a portal. You pay by credit card or phone scan before you get the drink.  They pay some minimum wage person to keep the machines full.

I’ve seen the concept for beer houses but not a full bar.  Not sure if anyone’s been to a WAWA but you have to order through a computer.  It doesn’t go so well for those that have had a few drinks in them.

Bars are an experience just as much as they are about drinks.  In Boise I loved the concept of the Bourbon Bar, but the fcking crowd was terrible - the majority of patrons were ordering tecate on special.

Most people want a person to make their drink for them, someone to recommend things, someone to complain about their food or drink to, or just someone to talk to.

Automation works for some industries, I don't think it'd do well in the bar world.

I think, therefore I'm.

Whiskey Bar in the slow early evening is where it's at. Though I do order PBR bottles there too!

USA transitions to service economy over last 40 years.

US workers...nah.

IIRC the "service" areas that are growing are the kind of superfluous office staff you see. Like... compliance officers, or administrative bloat, or that kind of thing... the number of restaurant jobs per capita has been more or less constant.

Remember that every argument you have with someone on MWCboard is actually the continuation of a different argument they had with someone else also on MWCboard.

I graduated in 2016 on Derby day, that place was a blast to watch the ponies.  And you’re exactly right, early crowd is far better as it turns into your average bro bar at night.

This 100%. I can see beer taps being automated, but not full bars. One of the best bars, or in this case pubs I've ever been to was called The Eagle over in the Little Venice district of London when I was studying abroad. The pub was about a block from my apartment and one day while I was out exploring I decided to go in and try it out. There was a sign posted on the door that said, "no electronics! Step in and socialize". When I walked in it was like stepping back into the 1940's. The bartender without hesitation said "you look American". I pulled up to the bar and we started talking about the area and where I was from. I asked him about recommendations and he asked if I ever had a "snake bite" or "diesel", it's a mix of cider and lager. He used Strongbow cider and Heineken, and for the "snake bite and black" he used Guinness. After drinking two I was about shitfaced. He was a good guy and I ended up spending nearly 3 hours in there just talking with him.

Oh geez... the idiots from the Visalia Country Club. I worked for a private computer repair company in 2004, and had to deal with those idiots downloading porn on to their computers and then freaking out when they lost files and shit. My dad actually told me at one point that even if he could have afforded a membership (he could now), he wouldn't join because they were a bunch of idiots who thought they were better than everyone else. The same went for people who live(d) in The Lakes.

Agreed! There's nothing worse than people who think they're better than another group of people.

Maybe at some shitty college bar with $1 beer nights and piss infested bathrooms.  But myself, and most like me, like conversing with the bartender as they may have good suggestions, or just are social folks.  I don't know many who would ever go to a bar where there wasn't a bartender.  Beer taprooms with the self-serves are obviously different, but I don't spend much time in those as it is just impersonal.

Take away the bartender, you will lose a heavy dose of customers.  Probably the ones that tip well too.

Yep. Bartenders and barbers aren't going anywhere. I can get behind the idea of a robot dentist though...

No, he's right. I grew up in Visalia/Tulare and they were 100% a bunch of idiots.
