Director’s Cup. Where is your school ranked?

UH did pretty well, tied for 84th.  That put us first among Big West members and ahead of all but two MWC members (Air Force and New Mexico).  Most of our points came from our men’s volleyball team winning the national championship and our women’s water polo team winning the Big West and finishing fifth in the NCAA tournament.

Out of curiosity, how many universities sponsor men’s volleyball and woman’s water polo?

A belated congrats on Hawaii’s national championship. I most have missed that. That is pretty cool no matter the sport.

According to ncaasports.com there are 48 D1 and D2 schools that compete for the men’s volleyball championship and 46 D1 and D2 schools that compete for the women’s water polo championship.  Based on recent rankings the Big West is the nation’s top men’s volleyball conference and second best (after the Pac-12) women’s water polo conference.  Of the six Big West schools that sponsor men’s volleyball, three finished the 2021 season ranked in the top 10 nationally.  Similarly of the seven Big West schools that sponsor women’s water polo, three finished the 2021 season ranked in the top 10 nationally.

Both men’s volleyball and women’s water polo are admittedly niche sports, but sponsoring and winning in a large number of niche sports is how schools like Texas, Stanford and Michigan are able to dominate the Director’s Cup standings.  I make no apologies for grabbing a few slices from that pie.

UH and UCSB were hurt by the Big West sitting out the women's volleyball and men's soccer seasons.  Both would have finished higher had those sports been played.

UC Santa Barbara finished 89th.  Despite missing women's volleyball (2nd round in 2019) and men's soccer (quarterfinals in 2019) which likely cost us 10-15 spots in the overall rankings.

It was an okay year, all things considered.

Covid really effed Boise. They haven't finished in tripple digits as long as I can remember. They are ususally in the 60s somewhere. The year before they were 49th. Had they just played their Bowl game they would have been in double digits, but still higher than usual.
