Had to put Charlie down last week, drove him over to the Equine hospital in Salinas and did an ultrasound.  Infection was in both the bone sheath and the hauk, it would have been a ten grand surgery with less than a 50% chance of success, so I had to be real about it.  Absolutely broke my daughters heart, god she loved that horse, he was a beautiful magnificent sonuvabitch.

The NP brand stands for National Park, he was originally a trail horse at Grant and Cedar Grove.

Horses are majestic animals. Very sad and very tough decision.

I have some Bear pics from 1998. I had a crappy digital camera, so the resolution is bad on these, but it’s an interesting situation. These are very downsized, I do have original much much bigger images.

I’m just off Lake Mary near Mammoth Lakes, CA in the Sierra’s, and I see a fisherman take off running yelling  “Bears!!!”. LOL. They were walking along the edge of the water and I jumped behind a wide tree trunk and peaked around to take pics. I also have shitty video.

The momma bear didn’t pick up my scent…..I had a fresh pair of underwear on. But not for long. After a while a park ranger shows up and shoots some firecracker type noise makers and the cubs went up a tree, and momma bear took off running. Then cubs eventually came down, walked over to the creek and went into the bushes (I thought they were gone).

So I walked over to the creek, and just stood still quiet. Then the momma bear FINALLY came back to the other side of the creek, and the cubs saw her and came out of the bushes, and the last pic I snapped was her showing concern seeing me next to her cubs. So I backed up slowly up the hill and talked nice to her and it was fine.

Now why was I auditioning for Faces of Death 2023? Because I know that momma bear. She was known by the rangers, sheriff and us semi-locals as Betty. We had a place up there. She was a daily visitor at Lake Mary and didn’t see people as a threat. Once I got to my truck on the road, she led her cubs right past two people talking outside of their truck, crossed the road and disappeared into the forest. Obviously, the fisherman didn’t know they were people friendly. Too bad they ate all his fish. LOL.

Love those bear pics @Nevada Convert. Very cool. Here's one of the few decent wildlife photos I've shot. Taken in Kaziranga during mating season (hence the puncture wound in his flank from another rhino's horn). Kaziranga is where Kipling based The Jungle Book after spending some time there himself.

More wildlife in that spot than anywhere I’ve been except maybe Yellowstone.. Elk, mule deer, coyote’s, foxes, bear prints(haven’t seen one though), mink, badgers, porcupine, all kinds of stuff. Southeastern edge of Boise.

Sounds kind of like where I was living in west Fort Collins right there close to Horsetooth Reservoir. Foxes, raccoons, mule deer, big old bucks eating off my apple and peach trees at night, even a big ass wolf came by the side of my house one night. Foxes everywhere. I’ve got pics stored somewhere.
