SDSU Recruiting 2022

Aztecs lost a QB commit who just got a Colorado offer (his dad played QB at CU). Not a huge loss, as he was kind of a sleeper/unknown prospect from Somoa and we recently added a similarly ranked QB.

I was worried the Aztecs would lose the athletic QB prospect Oakie Salave'a to Colorado once the Buffs offered.

Nothing's been confirmed but the Colorado bloodlines run deep as his dad Okland Salave'a actually played

D-Line for Colorado in the late 80's. I think the Buff QB you're thinking of is Sal Aunese (from Oceanside HS) who tragically

died from stomach cancer before he graduated.

Not a huge surprise here, Aztecs land OL Drew Azzopardi. Staff has been on him for a while now.

Mmmmm kay.

The lower end of the Big Sky wanted him. Then a huge void of upper level Big Sky and the lower end of Western G5 FB that passed on this kid.

What did Nevada and SUDS see in this kid besides his size ?

The staff was HARD after him. OL recruiting is arguably the trickiest position of all. Level of competition, growth, and lack of stats all make it tough to find guys. We’ve done a pretty good job of turning kids with zero offers into good OL. Hell, we turned a walk-on in to an NFL starter. If Goff, Krum, and Embernasty like him, I trust them. Also, this class isn’t super deep at OL, so they gotta pick wisely. Not a huge factor, but if he’s a guard, he’ll be behind Simmons and Masueli, two VERY highly recruited OL. If he’s a OT, he won’t see the field for a few years anyways.

I like it

WRT to Oakie. Good athlete with unknown ceiling, but it’s hard to really evaluate him purely as a QB. We recruited him as a QB/ATH, and I think he would have seen the defensive side of the ball for us. A loss for sure, but I think we find a good ATH to fill that void now.

Picked up UT QB Liu Aumavae (2* w/ offers to BYU and Central Michigan). Our lowest two rated recruits are QBs, which isn’t surprising. Hope he’s patient, because he likely has 3-4 years behind Haskell.

Ryan Henderson, DE from North LV: https://247sports.com/player/ryan-henderson-46113534/

Appears as though he may a silent commitment back on October 7 and it's now been acknowledged.

He wasn’t silent, he made a post about it. Arizona just offered so it’s getting new attention.

Arizona offered two of our commits. We’ll see what happens, but I think both stick. Pretty late in the game to offer guys, especially those committed to programs that aren’t in turmoil.

Like Lucas Johnson, the kid throws a good Fade Route to the corners.

There’s obviously a lot more that goes into recruiting than rankings, but I find it interesting to see how we are trending.

National Rank / MWC Rank / Avg
2022: 60 / 2 / 84.42 (2nd highest avg)
2021: 62 / 1 / 83.10 (4th highest avg)
2020: 95 / 3 / 82.11 (3rd highest avg)
2019: 92 / 6 / 81.49 (5th highest avg)
2018: 79 / 2 / 81.52 (2nd highest avg)
2017: 77 / 3 / 81.25 (2nd highest avg)

Class of 2022 (15 commitments so far)
110 offers total
7.33 offers per recruit
2.13 P5 offers per recruit
- Not bad considering we’re coming off a 4-4 season and are playing in the empty Dignity Health stadium and we haven’t held a single official visit yet. I think we’re done for the early signing period and we finish strong with good ‘22 guys and transfers once we can host OVs and showcase the stadium more.

Class of 2021 (24 signees)
154 total offers
6.42 offers per recruit
3.13 P5 offers per recruit
- Really solid class, but the COVID season is a bit of an unknown with recruits across the country not playing their senior year until after signing day.

Class of 2020 (19 signees)
76 total offers
3.68 offers per recruit
0.84 P5 offers per recruit
-Rocky’s last season. Not sure if, or how much, he was checked out during recruiting. He left after the first signing day, but before the second. Fairly certain we lost Sears because of that, and there could have been more.

Class of 2019 (22 signees)
5.13 offers per recruit
1.81 P5 offers per recruit
- This class likely dealt with lots of negative recruiting from other schools with all the stadium uncertainty. Hell, there was a small chance we wouldn’t have a program anymore if Soccer City won.

Notes:
-2019 class, 25 P5 and 23 G5 offers came from 2 guys who barely played a snap and transferred (Dinka/Blake). Remove them and we have:
3.57 offers per recruit
0.71 P5 offers per recruit

-Patrick McMorris was one of our lowest ranked recruits in the 4 years studied, yet leads our team in tackles. Many of our top recruits have transferred out or never made significant impacts.

-As of right now, this is the first season Boise State hasn’t had the #1 avg ranking in the MWC. They’ve been #2 overall, but that counts for total commitments, so it’s skewed towards bigger classes and not necessarily quality.

-UNLV has the #1 avg recruiting class so far in 2022, barely edging us out. They also edged us out last year (Boise, Fresno, UNLV, SDSU).

-Boise State 2022 (16 commits)
79 total offers
4.94 offers per recruit
1.56 P5 offers per recruit

Not knocking Boise’s class, simply comparing us to the top class. Still surprised we didn’t offer Virgin (local kid and one of their top commits) as he is a stud and we always recruit TEs heavy, although he may project as DE.

Like I have said before, it's not who you recruit, it's what you do with them.

We haven’t held an official visit this season. I believe the plan is to do so the week after the CCG (if we win tomorrow). Pretty incredible job by the staff to build this quality of a class without hosting anyone do OV.

Liu has three offers us ybu  and Central Michigan so some respect. The transfer stuff will hit the fan after spring practice and a lot of guys will want to leave, if they are too far down n the chart that will be true for alot of teams This year  one-year waiver y that will allow college football teams to sign up to seven players to replace those that leave. Or up to 32 until you reach 85 total ..

EDITED by HMHB because it was super annoying to scroll for 15 years
