NBA to Las Vegas? Ownership lined up

Recommended Posts

Only a matter of time.  The most important thing is unlike Stern who hated the idea, Silver is on board.  The only question about the next expansion go around is will they put two teams in the Pacific Time Zone (Seattle and Las Vegas).

As an aside, how would Tark have felt about an NBA team inLas Vegas?

Although it was not full-time, Las Vegas did have the NBA briefly in the mid 80s when Irwin Molasky was able to convince his friend, then Jazz owner Sam Battistone, to move some of their home games to the Thomas & Mack Center.

Publicly Jerry was supportive but privately he had some concern.  He was never fond of how big the Thomas & Mack Center was and knew the pressure he faced in having to fill the arena as the primary revenue source at the time.  The thought process was having a pro team come in temporarily was only going to make it that much harder for him to draw.

One of the big reasons he wanted to leave Long Beach was he wasn’t thrilled with the program struggling so much to get any attention despite their success having to compete with so many pro sports teams as well as UCLA basketball and USC football.  Sig and the others did a great job selling him on UNLV men’s basketball being the only game in town at the time.

As with the Jazz I think publicly he would have been supportive, but privately I don’t think he would have been too thrilled having to compete with the Raiders, Golden Knights and a NBA team.

The NBA to Vegas is way more likely than MLB.

Think that LV being in the pacific time zone helps - then they can move some of the central time zone teams into the east - Like Memphis & New Orleans - or got to 4 geographical conferences )West, South, Central & East )

Just based on the fact an NBA ready venue already exists where MLB has to build a stadium like the Raiders did & that's a 3 to 5 year process at best

NBA team could begin play in October at T-Moble & just has to think about building the team HQ & practice facility which could be done in 18 -24 months

Comments saying unlv will struggle or attendance  will die when pro teams move to the city are just silly.

UNLV tickets will always be more affordable than NBA - and in CBB UNLV could get back into the national spotlight where UNLV FB probably never will while in the MWC

Basically UNLV BB could survive in the MWC & draw fans where UNLV FB in the MWC is an after thought to most of the local population...........would take a move to the PAc to get the average local to really pay attention to UNLV FB & that interest would probably be more focused on the visiting PAC teams until UNLV could be a factor at that level (meaning at least playing .500)

It's just UNLV hate porn.

College sports and pro sports can co-exist in an uber sports-friendly market like Las Vegas. Hockey was predicted to be a disaster here, and sports-writers are calling T-Mobile Arena last night one of the greatest fan atmospheres---ever. and even outside playoffs, player polls rank T-Mobile as the best environment in sports. Vegas's reaction to hockey is what spurred NFL, NBA, and possibly MLB to Vegas. Everyone wants a piece now.

Fan enthusiasm is always tied to one thing and one thing only: WINNING. UNLV basketball is, and will always be one NCAA Tournament run away from being largely relevant again in Las Vegas. March Madness is bigger here than in any regional host cities anyway.

UNLV having a sold attendance of around 9,000 in 2019 is pretty decent for how apathetic the program has been the last 10+ years....a far cry from avging 15,500 in 2013....but WINNING changes that. Especially since UNLV tickets cost atleast 2x as much as any other ticket in the MWC.  SDSU had a sold attendance figures in 10,885 in 2019 and they win the league every year. Anyone remember what Viejas looked like before Fisher turned the program around? They were lucky to get 4k butts in seats.

Plenty of sports fans either in Vegas or willing to come to Vegas and take in a game while they are here. College sports definitely have a market here primarily due to the lower costs. Most people won’t or can’t afford more than a few seats at pro events. College games make it possible to take the entire family.

It always has been and still is about winning. Nobody spends money to watch losers except die hard fans. I have season ticket to both football and basketball.

Twolves aren’t going anywhere.  Memphis maybe but Nash would put up a huge fight for them.  New Orleans is most likely possibility.

I like to think the TWolves are more in with the Bucks, Bulls, Pistons, Pacers, Cavs, then the Thunder, Nuggets, Jazz, Blazers. Pelicans can stay with the Texas teams. That's why I think that split works better. Great Lakes to the East, Gulf Coast to the West.

That...plus baseball in Vegas really makes no sense.  Baseball in the desert during the summer months is tough.  I don’t see tourists all that interested in a game.  I’ve been to the AZ venue and it’s no fun watching indoors when the roof is closed, but at least in PHX you have a metro much much larger than LV, so it’s worth MLB being there.

Add in selling tix to 81 games is much tougher than 41 for hoops, or 8-10 for football. It’s a different type of season ticket holder.  I know the casinos could comp a bunch of tickets, but there are only so many high rollers and how many want to spend 4+ hours at a baseball game?  It’s much different than a prize fight, NBA game, etc...
