Sandoval Says UNR to the AAU?????

I am not a Nev native nor did I attend UNR ...but have certainly noticed there is a  attitude by people living in Clark county about N. Nevada. There so insecure about themselves its hilarious! Always have to put down N. Nevada to try to hold up their very fragile egos.  ( yeah they have better casinos in the south).

Just look at this silly thread!

You guys have dominated them in the sport that they claim they are an "elite" powerhouse. If it happens again this year, they will start getting drastic with their insecurities. Rebel Robert and this new guy are one letter short of going postal with today's status.

Don't get me wrong... Ivy hockey is great, and those are real rivalries. That's just emblematic of the kinds of students who go there that "Safety School" is supposed to cut deep. Not a lot of flair to their smack talk.

If I was ever at a SJSU game and someone chanted "Safety School" at Boise State, I'd tell him to be more creative.

I always liked the Ivy chant "That's alright. That's OK. You'll be working for us someday." But that really only works when they're getting their ass kicked by some big state school.

Do you expect him to lay out a goal and then say it's an unrealistic one? What a moronic statement inside of a even more moronic tantrum of a thread. Get over it and quit being a baby.

Give me a break.  Pointing out how stupid and unreasonable Sandoval's claim is--and backing it up with facts and statistics--is somehow moronic, a tantrum and being a baby.  Yet you're the one who immediately jumped in with the most childish academic smack and stereotypes about UNLV.

UNLV alums can be unrealistic about our place in the athletic pecking order.  Hint: we're not getting into the P12.  UNR alums, however, are utterly delusional about their place in the academic pecking order.  It's why Sandoval could spout that nonsense and most UNR grads buy it hook, line and sinker.  Hint: you're a minor research university with low rankings, low graduation rates, a low endowment and close to open admissions--the same thing that UNLV is.  That I punctured your delusional bubble that you're something more and that there is some fundamental gap between where UNR and UNLV stand on the academic food chain is what brought about the real moronic tantrums.

The fact that you think its stupid and unreasonable to set goals is the moronic part.  Everything else is the tantrum throwing part.   But then you are clearly here to troll, so hey, whatever makes you feel better.

In the beginning the Universe was created.
This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

Setting reasonable goals or even reach goals is certainly a good thing.  Spouting utterly unreasonable goals to fan the flames of your alumni base's delusional self-image is something else entirely.  Telling the UNR community that getting into the AAU in ten years is a reasonable goal is like telling a kid with a 2.00 average after his sophomore year that if he works really hard next year, he can get into Harvard.  You're just setting him up for bitter disappointment when reality shoves its boot up his ass.

A dozen posts on this board. You’re a sock making an ass of yourself over a speech given by a new president at UNR. Facts.

Why do Rebel fans have such a huge chip on their shoulders when it comes to UNR?

So freaking insecure.

There hasn't been a single post or mention of this by a Nevada fan/grad. In fact, it had never been mentioned until you arrived and threw a tantrum about it....and yes, you're being a baby about it. I echo the sentiments of pretty much every other person in this thread, your fellow UNLV fans included, that I'd much rather have lofty goals that are difficult to achieve to push the school forward than not. And what do you care anyway? Again, get over it.

This is definitely a realistic goal, similar to how we set a goal to obtain the R1 classification through Carnegie within 10 years and ended up gaining it in less time.

Nevada (the state and university) is growing exponentially, and will continue to do so. With more and more tech and manufacturing companies moving into the area we will continue to foster public/private relationships.

The NSF hasn't updated their numbers in a few years, but when they last posted in 2017 Nevada had the 149th ranked research budget of $105 million (compared to UNLV's $66 million). Consider how it has been trending:

2019-$145 million

2017-$105 million

2012-$85 million

These numbers are higher than the University of Oregon which is currently AAU, and are very close to UCSC who is also a member. Obviously there are many other factors, and we certainly aren't a shoe-in. But having this is as our long-term goal is exactly what we should be doing.

Our endowment also increased from $93 million in 2010 to $232+ today. And our number of new doctoral students increased by 30% from 2018 to 2019.

UNLV is experiencing much of the same growth, and there's certainly room for two good research universities in the state. But it seems pretty small-minded to mock us for setting high (but still realistic) goals.

one needs to understand that those NSF (HERD) numbers are for research and development not just research

one can see the definitions here

https://researchadmin.asu.edu/nsf-herd-survey

The AAU is more interested in the research aspect of the numbers and again they are interested in competitively awarded research. As the Land Grant school in Nevada The University of Nevada will get money statutorily awarded from the USDA based on a number of factors the AAU will not count that in their measurements. And a university could get a large donation from a company say to conduct research on chemical leaching for mining operations. This would be perfectly valid research and important to The State of Nevada especially, but since there was no competition for the award the AAU will not count it in their measurements. So one cannot simply look at the gross numbers and compare them to the lowest AAU members and say "above that check that metric off the list". And again the AAU will "normalize" those numbers to the total faculty count of a university. Oregon with zero engineering programs and no medical school is a real abnormality and that is why they are investing close to $1 billion with $500 million of that from the Knights to improve their life sciences research because that is all they have.

Colorado used to have a much more in depth report on their state budget issues and the overall funding of CU, but I do not see that any longer. They do still have peer comparisons up including with AAU members.

https://www.colorado.edu/oda/department-institution-data/peer-comparisons

https://www.colorado.edu/oda/department-institution-data/peer-comparisons/aau-public-peer-institutions

here is a news report on past Missouri self evaluation (I have read that report, but can no longer find it) the "date" on the top is not the same as the 2015 publication date with the actual article

https://themissouritimes.com/report-reveals-mu-ranked-at-the-bottom-of-the-association-of-american-universities/

Colorado is very low in tuition and state funding, but they do a great deal of research especially for having no medical school. Missouri probably needs to get it together and fast. The AAU does not like to kick out members that is for sure, but their research profile is poor for having a medical school and as the news story said they were pretty much dead last. Considering they are a land grant their HERD numbers are bad and for many schools that gave them a leg up on life sciences research years ago. They have a medical school and a vet school was well which makes their HERD numbers worse. They are low on national academy members and Missouri has plenty of universities to meet their population needs so there is nothing that should hold admissions criteria down.

UCSC shows what is possible they have a low endowment, they had some low admissions standards in the past when there were students acting like children, and their research numbers are not massive. But of course now because of location, crowding at other UC schools, they have 37 national academies members, and they have some very famous human genome researchers helps them out along with high state funding for being a UC member. They are also not an extremely large university so there research per faculty member is probably high.

Looking at UCSC (no medical school) and Utah (with a medical school, but not the state land grant) and comparing aspects of those two gives an idea of what it takes. When you look at Georgia Tech they probably should have been in sooner with their massive research profile and their engineering prowess, but the AAU was clearly in stand still mode for quite a while.

There is no doubt the actions by Oregon are response to actions by the AAU even if the AAU never said a thing specifically to Oregon. Oregon has always been very clear and up front about athletics budgeting and spending and I respect that and I think they know they are lucky to have Knight, but I also think they have no interest in looking like a school that concentrated on athletics and spent massively in it while ignoring academics and one day finding themselves out of the AAU.....all the worse for another school that found that out just after their "big university move" to another athletics conference....where they have pretty much sucked......and all the more so when it was put out that they had a 10 year warning and discussions with the AAU to improve

It certainly does not help Nevada that The Desert Research Institute is not a part of their campus and has their own administration and reports their own research numbers....not sure why that came to be, but it did

Great post and some interesting insight.

I've always wondered the same about the Desert Research Institute? Does anyone have any background of why it was formed independently of the universities?

Desert Research Institute was formed & funded originally by Nevada & last I heard they were doing about 80 mil yr in research.  Don't know why they were broken away to become an independent entity but they are collaborating on a lot of projects with the University.    The molecular medical research facilities haven't been going all that long & as time goes by they should see an increase in research funding.

I would imagine it had something to do with no teaching load for the faculty and them being full time research or masters and PhD level teaching only

I'm still confused how Oregon and Oregon State neither have a medical school and Oregon created a Uni just for the medical school in Portland (OHSU)

you have to have the residency slots available for the medical students and they actually have to be treating people not just standing around in a hospital doing nothing

when all their schools were founded I imagine Eugene and Corvallis did not come close to having the medical facilities of Portland

worse for the state is the fact that 4 of their 7 non-medical public universities have enrollments under 6,500 students and some of them well under that.....that is highly inefficient and creates a lot of overhead expenses

As someone pointed out above, you can't be merely slightly better than the lowest ranked AAU member to get in.  Utah proved that point, as will the other Wolfpack when they get in.  You probably need to be in the middle third of public universities to get an invite.  UNR is far, far (really +++++ing far) behind the worst current public members.  Hell, Georgia Tech--despite their incredible strengths--was kept out for decades because it was felt that they were too one-dimensional and didn't have the requisite strengths in the core arts and sciences.  How are UNR's history, astronomy and economics departments these days?

We don't hate you because we ain't you.  We hate you because we don't want to become you: a stagnant, lowly ranked, essentially open-admission inter-mountain university.  True, we're the same thing right now (minus the stagnant part), but we're fifty years old....not one hundred and fifty years old.  We're a work in progress with shiny new law and medical schools in the fastest growing metropolitan region in the country.

There is no established century old flagship in Nevada, no Berkeley...no Texas...no Wisconsin or Washington.  If there were, they would have established the names as "The University of Nevada" and The University of Nevada at Las Vegas."  Nope, it was "Nevada, Reno" and "Nevada, Las Vegas."  The foaming at the mouth responses here are really a function of me rupturing the balloon of delusion within which UNR honks operate.  That they're some under appreciated UC/Big Ten level academic institution.

I'm sure that most of UNR's faculty rolled their eyes at Sandoval's boast.  I'm sure that he's been told that his "goal" is completely unrealistic.  I'm sure he's been informed that publicly boasting about his AAU goal is, in itself, frowned upon by the AAU.  And I'm sure that Sandoval shrugged it all off because he's a politician doing what politicians do: lying to whip up his base, making completely insincere promises and knowing full well that he'll be down the road when those unkept goals turn into dust.

At least you're good for a couple of laughs. Did you get rejected by an AAU dream school? I run in to people all the time who wishes their alma mater were an AAU school said no one ever. I'd bet you 90+ percent of the general population even know what that is. I think that the vast majority of Nevada/UNR grads realize that we aren't the Harvard of the Sierras and are just fine with that. It's the school president's job to set goals and raise money.  All you've done is strengthen the stereotype of a UNLV fan.  You realize that admissions policy is set at the State level right? Most people, still very few, care more about whether their school get's a PAC invitation and I'll concede that UNLV has the lead over UNR in getting their butts kicked by USC and Oregon instead of San Jo and Wyo. Continue obsessing because honestly, Nevada grads don't give a second thought to UNLV academics. Most objective people realize denigrating UNR doesn't make UNLV any better.
