Sandoval Says UNR to the AAU?????

Recommended Posts

Is he fricking delusional?  He says it's a 10 year goal.  I guarantee that the youngest and healthiest member of this forum will die before UNR even sniffs an invite.

Here is how UNR really stacks up.  Keep in mind this is how they rank among only public research universities.  Private ones are not included.

Total Research Funding: 106th.  Federal Research: 99th.  Endowment: 93rd.  Annual Fundraising: 92nd.  National Academy Members: 83rd.  Faculty Awards: 89th.  Doctorates Awarded: 99th.  Post Docs Appointees: 86th.  Median SAT Score: 134th.

And how UNR stacks up against UNLV.  Hint: the gap ain't what you think it is.

Middle 50% SAT scores.  UNR 1070-1290 UNLV 1030-1250  Acceptance Rate: UNR 88%  UNLV 81%  Graduation Rate: UNR 53%  UNLV 40%  Endowment: UNR 367M UNLV 305M

And this is before our medical school kicks in.  Nevada isn't Texas or Washington or Wisconsin where there is one unchallenged historical flagship.  There's a reason that the legal names were changed to Nevada, Reno and Nevada, Las Vegas.  The system was set up as co-equal brances.  What's going to matter is demographics, politics and private support.  Good luck competing with Vegas in that regard.

I’m just surprised there wasn’t a 750 word article in the LV Sun about this with eight “professors” from the Brookings Institute (who don’t actually teach but write op ed for a living), condemning Sandoval for setting this goal “because Vegas is the mostest diverse school and we can’t even afford pork and beans or remove our racist mascot.”

It's true.  It's been known for awhile. He has a viable plan to get us there and the connections to make it happen.

10 years may be a bit optimistic. 15 is more likely.

The way things are trending, NV will be an AAU school before Vegas gets a win in the Dance.

Ironic that fans from a school that is apparently headed to the B12 or P12(they can write their own ticket really, both conferences are begging), making final 4 claims in the next few years are discrediting realistic academic goals for their rival.

The author of this thread has 2 posts to his name and he starts out with the typical UNLV bang..

One thing we know for sure is UNLV will never be a AAU school. A degree there gets you a discount at a whore house, not much more.

A degree from UNLV gives a lot of bang for the buck!

What fricking connections does he have that will get UNR into the AAU?  Having gone to law school at tOSU?  It's not a 10 year project or a 15 year project or a 50 year project.  It's a delusional pipe dream.

Again look at the data that I linked.  By the exact kind of metrics that determine AAU membership, UNR is somewhere between the 83rd and 134th best PUBLIC research university in the US.  Not exactly setting the world on fire.

UNR and UNLV are essentially peer universities, decent regional public schools that aren't all that hard to get into.  The difference is that UNLV people have a realistic image of their school.  UNR people have deluded themselves into thinking the place is a UC campus.  Hell, by the data I posted, it's not even the University of Cincinnati.

What self own?  I stated that there was a gap between the two schools but that it was nowhere near as significant as UNR honks like to believe.

I’m more interested in why UNLV’s president isn’t making this a long term goal for UNLV. As much as it kills me to say, I’m not mad at Sandoval for setting the bar high for Reno.

That's a bit harsh.  I respect UNLV grads.   The best gardener we've ever hired is a proud UNLV alum.   They also produce some of best bartenders in the world.  Although most of them have a graduate degree from UNLV as well.

I think they did.  I think there is a stated mission and a plan to get Vegas to tier one status.

IIRC, that began a couple of years ago.

Despite all of the "fan speak," the reality is both schools are trending in the right direction.

I hear the beverage curriculum is brutal. Which is why so many students flag out and park cars for a living. That’s where the BIG money is!
