OT: MLB to Vegas??

Recommended Posts

Baseball needs a system of promotion and relegation now that there is no differences in the rules between the American and National League.

If I were able to hypnotize the MLB owners and the commissioner at a board meeting, I'd have an American League  with 20 teams in four divisions that would be the top league and then have a national league with 10 teams in two divisions.  The attendance numbers fall below 20,000 after 20 on the list too.

The American League would play an eight team playoff while the winner of each National League division would play the two American League teams with worst records overall in order to promote/relegate up to two teams each season.

I think it would be more interesting if teams that are eliminated from the playoffs still have something to play for later in the season.  Ideally this would make fans of teams like the A's, the Marlins, etc. something to root for.

Oakland needs an ownership that cares about the team, they haven't had one for a while and these owners have done everything they could have done to destroy the attendance for this season for some reason, and other MLB owners are not very happy with the A's ownership right now.

I mean you dismantle a team, trade away the players that the fans know, you are going to see low attendance and put that with a glorfied AAA team on the field

Nah.  They need a hard salary cap and a salary floor.  They also need to forget about any expansion.

Players are in favor of a salary floor but not a cap, owners aren't in favor of that. Owners like expansion and players don't

According to Lacob he still has a standing offer from Fisher to buy the A's if he keeps them in Oakland.

Unless you're the Cubs.  Then you get 35,000 suckers out for a Wednesday day game.

I wouldn't mind going to a Cubs game though during the day if ever was around there mostly for the stadium experience of course.

Not sure they’re suckers, though. Wrigley day games are so much damn fun, even when the Cubs stink.

The genius move by the Cubs was bringing in Harry Carry as TV PbP guy and getting games on WGN nationwide cable systems --- That combo made the "lovable losers" an instant hit & Wrigley Field became a must visit for any baseball fans list and made Cubs games a 3 hour party where the results were secondary to the Wrigley Experience

Better hope it is the Angels going to Las Vegas. If it is the A’s you will have terrible ownership for at least 20 years. Fischer purchased the team for $180 Million and can sell for $4B. However if he puts team in a trust and they sell after he dies his estate doesn’t have to pay any CD capital gains taxes.

No need to compete in MLB since they don’t have to in order to earn big bucks. Plus the city and state will have to pretty much match the Raider tax giveaway in order to make that move.

They will price out the average Las Vegas citizen for their games too. Only those visiting will get the good corporate seats. Plus they will be a AAA team competing in MLB.

Have Fun!

States only move was a legislative session to allow Clark County to create a special room tax district for Alegiant Stadium............and after that, even though it's mainly a tourism paid tax, there's not much stomach for any public funding for any more sports venues -- A's , Angels, MLB will have to do it on their own ---- about the only "local" help will probably be some favorable zoning waivers, depending on whatever sites they might be looking at.

Allegiant Stadium works well for the community and a facility of that size was needed here. Over the years to come it will pay for itself many times over for Las Vegas. Then there is the whole payday that is the NFL. The Vegas tourism industry in general benefits here. Super Bowl will be giant. Nothing else moves the needle like this. MLB may be profitable here but not to the point where public funds should be used like the Allegiant deal. Pretty much the same with the NBA.

No water no future.  20 years from now… Vegas will be drinking there own urine.  Teams and people will flee the ghost town. Get real….  Major investors aren’t really making long-term commitments to the area.  I’ve said it before… family was to make a large investment in the area and they walked away because they couldn’t see 20-30 years into the future.
Sports teams like the Raiders are known transients.  They will pick up and leave at the first sign of trouble. Others, with options, won’t make that mistake…

Good luck…

The main things was Vegas needed a venue of this size & the Raiders were the 1st to come along...........now that Vegas has the large venue, does it really need another for MLB, even though MLB will use it 81+ days per year. Allegiant has been a boon so for for events that vegas could have never hosted or held, so it was a much needed venue.

That's why I think any "public $$" will be a hard sell. As it was giving Allegiant Stadium the special tax wasn't overly popular, even though it really doesn't affect the locals much.

Just think that any MLB stadium would have to be 100% privately backed - Plus with MLB sort of slumping in the major sports pecking order, I could see whatever Vegas MLB team going with a smaller 38,000 -34,000 seating capacity with a dome that can be opened - It could hold events that don't need the capacity of Allegiant

Allegiant Stadium room tax revenue hits post-pandemic high

Hotel room tax revenue that pays off the bonds used to build the $2 billion Allegiant Stadium reached post-pandemic monthly highs in recent months as visitation continues to bounce back.

In May, the 0.88 percent tax on hotel rooms in Clark County generated $5.3 million, besting the previous post-pandemic high of $5 million set in October 2021. The month before, in April, the tax collected another $5.1 million, according to the Las Vegas Stadium Authority’s latest report.

As of July, the fund stands at $66.7 million, or 26 percent shy of reaching the fully funded amount of $90.3 million. When fully funded, the fund is set up to make two full years of stadium bond payments if $0 in room tax was being generated.

Don't be naïve.  Las Vegas has already agreed to public funding for MLB and it was widely reported when they did so.

Las Vegas will do anything they have to do to have the Yankees, Dodgers, Red Sox and Cubs playing on the Las Vegas STRIP!

They told us it would never happen.  They were wrong.  Don't be one of them.  It is going to happen and Las Vegas is going to fund it!

Whatever it takes.  We will get NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL.   We are willing to open our pocket books if we have to.  Yankees on the LV Strip will HAPPEN!
