OT: MLB to Vegas??

And yet, Raiders leave, Warriors leave, now the A’s are on the verge of leaving. Fans move all over the country. Tv access for people to watch a plethora of games is even on our phones. The one constant for millions of people is that they like to come play in Vegas regularly. We have our local population but we also have a large transient population of tourists to generate interest. Interest = $

You don't understand.  The economics of how a MLB team makes money are vastly different than an NBA or NFL team.

Whatever the economics are there is obviously a reason to leave a 50+ year location and tradition. It is also obvious that Las Vegas is very attractive to this particular MLB team and I would think that they have looked at the financials while talking to their broadcast partners. I don’t know, maybe they’re just wingin’ it.

One minor thing to all this is both the Giants & A's claim Las Vegas a their market - Dodgers, Giants & A's games are the hardest to get in the LV market due to MLB territorial rights deals.......LV gets Angels & most D-backs on the Bally's sports stations out of OC & AZ......Padres come in on YOURLVTV ch 14 cable (sitting on patio watching Giants at Padres on COX Cable Stream).........so A's relocating to LV probably gongs LV getting Padres, Angels & D-backs games

Same thing in the NHL......LV used to get most all Kings & Ducks games on the regional sports channels........when VGK came in, no more Kings or Ducks.....AZ Coyotes were never on TV here from a regional standpoint

So....based on MLB territories would the A's in LV mean the SLC/Provo/Ogden markets come under A's or Rockies control - LV is a 6 to 7 hour drive, Denver a few hours more

VGK wrangled a lot of the inter-mountain west region up into Montana, Idaho & Wyoming for ATTSN TV territory - which shares Utah with the Jazz

The hockey fans in Utah barely acknowledge that the Knights exist.  If anything they follow their own preference or follow the Colorado Avalanche because the Utah Grizzlies are part of the Avalanche farm system.  If the Knights or any Vegas team wants to gain more fans in Utah, they would need to play more pre-season games in Utah.  The LA Kings play a pre-season rotating opponent in SLC.

Sports betting was the main NBA issue for years - Now that should be put to bed with the expansion of sports betting across the country.

The AAA baseball team here had the highest attendance in all of MLB & came close to outdrawing the Marlins, so there's a baseball fan base here - then factor in visiting fans & pretty much any sport will draw decent crowds - See BYU vs AZ & what Iowa St brought in

It's not the attendance that makes me think Vegas is a bad baseball market. It's the regional TV deal, which is more important than any other major pro sport, that would have me concerned. Not only is Vegas a tiny primary TV market, its secondary TV markets are nonexistent.

This is true - that's why I was asking about how far to the north the LV territory would extend - I know that ATT SN RM WEST splits between Jazz & Golden Knights - But I think all of Nevada gets VGK, as does parts of Idaho, Wy & Montana - along with Mohave County Az which is Kingman, Lake Havasu - But that is for the NBA/NHL seasons........baseball I think SLC gets Colorado Rockies games while LV gets Angels & D-backs on the Bally's regionals - And both Bally's regionals come out of southern CA which were Angles & Ducks, while the other used to be Kings & Lakers........then lakers moved over to another channel, and Kings / Ducks are no more due to VGK.........so D-backs piggy back into LV area on old Lakers Kings Bally's feed.

Padres are Bally's out of SD, but YurViewTV on Vegas cable

Regardless...........any LV pro sport MLB, NBA or NHL will have one of the smallest regional populations of potential viewers

Agree - MLB has the most aggravating TV blackout system...........LV is far enough from Phoenix, SD, Anaheim, LAA, SF & Oak that I doubt anyone's said "let's not drive to the game tonight & just watch it on TV" - Same with Iowa, it's a few hours drive to each of the surrounding teams so it's not like it's a driver of attendance on a weeknight to blackout games & try to entice people to come in person

in SLC Rockies and Diamondbacks are blacked out, but we get the rest. It makes no sense

I don't think AAA attendance is indicative of potential MLB prosperity.  Just two massively different products. Minor league baseball is like going to a drive in movie. Mostly there for a little kitsch.

Cracks me up when the sports guy on the news says the aviators won or lost like it matters. It doesn't even matter that much to the aviators.

How the NBA has managed to miss the boat on Vegas is beyond me. It would have been an absolute home run years ago. But I think Vegas will be a terrible baseball market.

The thing with the nba now is that it's riskier with the Knights being so popular, and hockey and basketball are at the same time. The market may support both but I can see each product significantly denting the other.  However! That might be a good thing to locals as vgk tix and the whole experience is just redic. $800-900 to sit downstairs, shake shack, a couple drinks, parking.

You got to be @Rebels18 or @robe to afford that more than few times a year.

I would not be a fan of the Oakland Athletics moving to Las Vegas.  I especially don’t want the nickname and logo.

What if they changed their name to the "F*CKIN' A"'s and changed their mascot to a giant eggplant? I bet you'd get on board then.

Minor league attendance doesn't measure how MLB will do here - different animal & I said at all minor league levels, winning & losing is secondary to developing players to get up to the parent team.

But there is a solid baseball fan base here that probably would attend MLB games

Also factor in the difference between a VEGAS born team (to use the overworn term) vs a relocated team.............VGK had the benefit of being THE FIRST EVER & had no history to bring from another city, so locals glomming onto the VGK can pretty easy, there was no history to hate like with the Raiders.......great for the Raiders fans already here, but LV has a lot of people who will sill cling to their old home NFL teams just like they do with their college teams

I'd much rather have brean new expansion teams (even tho they might lose) over relocated teams

And LV being a smaller pro market.........there has to be a saturation point with all the pro sports teams looking at LV...........but also LV has a built in visiting fan factor that most metro's that have pro sports don't have -- Not sure how many many Las Vegas A's fan might have the urge to go on a 3 day roadie to Minnesota or Kansas City, but I'd bet the Minny & KC fans make a series when those teams visit LV

If there's people that are going to get burned, it's those that jumped on the VGK ticket frenzy & made a sizable profit by selling seats on the secondary market - Same with Raiders, there's people here who bought seasons tickets as an investment vehicle with little intention of attending games or very few games

That I think is one thing MLB is going to have to work on is the blackouts, was talking with a few people i know and Mariner games are blocked out all the way to Montana for a friend who moved there from Portland.

But do i think they move to Vegas? I don't think so think but as more time continue to go by, ehh. There are a lot of closet A's fans but who wants to go to Oakland Coliseum at night?

But Oakland at the same time, has not shown many signs they want to keep the A's in Oakland, everyone wants to keep looking the current ownership but this has been going on well before the current ownership. This is the third time they have circled the Howard Terminal for a stadium and Beane himself has aliented fans himself but the thing is with the A's AAA team already in Vegas someone is going to suffer as it would be go to Aviators or go to A's games. Most people aren't going to go to both. And whether in Vegas or in Oakland the ownership will be paying for the stadium and all that stuff unless some other investors come in which is possibly the case in Vegas.

But the fans have come out to support the A's the city not so much. But both sides are still talking................

Hard to get excited when their playoff hopes have collapsed and you are looking at a probable off season sell off of the teams best players and the owner is talking about moving.  Plus the A’s jacked up the price of everything after Covid.  They really have not been fan friendly at all this season. Until they commit to staying and get a new ballpark built, many fans will just give them the middle finger.

I love VGK but I'm not paying the prices they want for season tickets and 41 games is way too many. I won't spend a penny on the Raiders. If given free seats I don't know if I'd go. Not a fan of the NFL game in person. I have no interest in the NBA.

But if the A's or an expansion MLB franchise comes to Vegas I'd buy season tickets. There is something different about going to a baseball games. I have Padres season tickets now so I may have to give those up but it's a hell of a lot easier to go to games in town than get to SD for games.

The Giants have been just the opposite. Very fan friendly this year.  I’ve been to three games this season at Oracle — and one spring training game in Scottsdale. Ironically, the three games I’ve been to at Oracle were the best tickets I’ve ever had and the price was amazing (for Giants tickets in SF anyway). And the game in Scottsdale was the most I’ve ever paid for a baseball game ticket, period. And I lived in Denver in the 90s and used to go to games all the time. We spent over $200 per ticket in AZ because of covid for a preseason game!

Hockey ticket prices are obscene. I couldn’t afford them when I lived in Denver and the Avs were winning Stanley cups.

But the beer prices are unbelievable. Still, I love going to the park. And I've enjoyed the two games I've been to this year.

Oakland is so dumb. This is the sports team they need to keep. Football is a pain in the ass, played on Sunday, etc. But 81 games per year is an amazing thing for a downtown if done right. See China Basin in SF, see Lodo in Denver.  This would be huge for Vegas… assuming Vegas puts it in downtown and not some dirt lot in Hendo or a back lot at a casino.
