45 men, women and children crushed to death in Israel. Police to blame, it looks like.

Look into the religious group that pushed Netanyahu to allow the event.  It appears there is a very narrow steep stairway where people fell and the pile up commenced.   Police were in a no win situation in this one.  With venue way overcrowded I am not sure how you stop this.  You have to regulate how many get in but the gov and a certain religious group were driving.  I think almost everything in Israel is driven by religion.

I wouldn’t say everything is driven by religion. A lot of the Israeli population is not particularly observant. But the orthodox segment of the population wields power out of all proportion to its numbers due to its key role in any right-of-center ruling coalition.

Outside of Vatican City it's the only country that is a theocracy unless I'm missing some small country somewhere - And no Saudi Arabia isn't a theocracy, it's a  "kingdom" that is run like a theocracy, but it wasn't created specifically for a specific religion

Then again, I'm the same guy, who, after the Harvest Festival shooting/Tom Petty overdose, went to class the next day and made the joke "I heard 30,000 people went to see a Country festival and 55 got to meet Tom Petty afterward"

FFS, Joe....

I honestly just don't care. It's amusing that people would kill themselves at a God Festival just like it would amuse me if people killed each other at a Music Festival. I mean, yeah, it's kind of +++++ed up, but on the other hand, it's kind of Darwin at work.

Then again, I'm the same guy, who, after the Harvest Festival shooting/Tom Petty overdose, went to class the next day and made the joke "I heard 30,000 people went to see a Country festival and 55 got to meet Tom Petty afterward", which sparked off a wild litany of outrage among my classmates. It turned out some chick in that class had been shot at the festival in Las Vegas. Lmao. I mean, it's not funny someone got shot there, but it is funny in that it felt like something out of a Kevin Smith film.

Everyone thought I was an asshole anyway, beforehand, based mostly on my boredom-induced BlueRules-inspired commentary, but that cemented it.

Oh well. +++++ 'em if they can't take a joke. So take my views with a grain of salt. Or cancel me. It's all good.

Sort of hits the same nerve when there's the weekly mass shooting.........it's NEVER the guns fault & GUNS are not the problem, it's always "mental health issues" .........which means for many on this board the NRA message machine & money was effective on implanting the immediate NRA driven response

Yeah, good thing you do not want to be a politician.

I realize that. There's a reason I'll never seek public office. Most of the reasons why have been on display on this message board over the last 10 years or so.

+++++ it. I don't care. Making off color jokes is my natural right. If saying shitty things about people is a crime, then I'm a capital criminal.

So long as you know it is shitty.  Saying shitty things knowing it is shitty is more palatable for sure than saying shitty things thinking you are being anything else.

I say shitty things too.

Israel is not a theocracy. The symbol means nothing in terms of the type of government. The UK flag is a combination of the crosses of three different saints (George, Andrew and Patrick). A theocracy is rule by religious leaders. Israel is a Parliamentary democracy where some of the parties are religious. MPs of religious parties have rarely held government positions, led alone been national leaders. Iran would be close as the Ayatollah has more power than the elected leaders.

I think every old timer here has probably made a post that crossed the line to some people.. Being a mod here doesn’t mean anything really and doesn’t afford any power. I suppose you can ban people but I don’t think we’ve ever had a mod that really did that. I banned 1 person in like 3-4 years with Steve. I’m getting off topic here but I don’t think removing UNLV2001 as a mod for a single post is necessary.  Same as I don’t think Bob should be removed for a few hundred questionable posts. Blue might have earned his ban I’m not sure I missed that ordeal, but the place isn’t the same without him even though I agree with almost nothing he says.

But you had to ban Steve like 15 times, all the while he's insisting that his new wingman account was a totally new person

My take on the whole 45 people getting crushed to death is that it’s simply tactless to make snide remarks, regardless of their religion or lack there of. But carry on.

Don't listen to Joe...he's a nihilist.

These men are cowards.

Good points, but Israel was carved out of the eastern Mediterranean coast for the single reason of giving Jews a homeland - Iran is ruled by Islamic hard liners but Iran wasn't created as a homeland for Muslims - The British basically partitioned countries in the middle east after WWI.......and then in 1947 Israel was carved out for one specific religion, which (to this day) has rankled Palestine & others in that immediate region.

I know the history of the founding of the state of Israel. The origin of the state does not determine whether or not it is a theocracy. You need to look up the definition of the word. A theocracy is a country ruled by religious leaders. Israel has never been that. It was founded as a homeland for Jews, but in its early days it was as much an experiment in idealistic agrarian socialism carried out by people of Jewish ethnicity as it was a haven for the Jewish faith.

I have several current and former colleagues who are Israeli and they’re about as secular as one can be. You’re absolutely correct about Israel’s government — for all its faults, it isn’t a theocracy.
