Muni Stadium, an "actual baseball stadium", is right next door.  Eventually we will have to build one, but it's not the highest priority right now.

Our sports facilities have needed a lot of work, but people have to admit that there has been a lot of renewal at SJSU recently: new golf hitting range, new softball field, new soccer field, new tennis courts, new sand volleyball courts, new stadium scoreboard, new intramural field, new parking garage, new swimming and diving facility, new football operations building and east side stadium renewal (in process).   And more to come.   Has anyone else even come close to that widespread level of activity?

Does your new softball field still resemble a city park field?  Minus any actual permanent seats or dugouts?

Yes, Asterisk Boy, practice fields are like that.

The new baseball practice field is being built in order for expansion into a park in the future.  Right now we have a nice game day facility but need a practice facility.

Facilities are being completed in phases. Phase two of the softball field will turn it into a compete stadium.  When everything is completed, over $150 million will have been spent on the south campus athletic facilities (that doesn’t include the main campus facilities).  That’s pretty incredible.

In all fairness, we’ve been behind is facilities but we have caught up quickly.  The new swimming/diving and waterpolo complex is completed and top notch.  The new tennis courts are completed and are nice enough that we hold a ladies professional tennis tournament there each summer. The sand volleyball facility is (Spartan Beach) completed.  The new soccer field is completed and is awaiting the finish of the SAC to have new locker rooms, meeting rooms, coaches offices etc...and 1000 seats of grandstands.  The new parking garage is completed as is the new intramural field (rugby stadium). Spartan complex has been renovated for volleyball, gymnastics, and judo.  The new student recreation center is completed and incredible.

We need to build out phase two of the golf complex to include the clubhouse and locker room facilities. We need to finish the baseball practice field.  The softball park needs to be completed with grandstands and restrooms and the ongoing renovation of Spartan Stadium needs to continue.  Then we need to take a hard look at the Events Center for expansion. Either that or moving more men’s basketball games to the Shark Tank.

Things are definitely nearing completion at south campus. Look out MWC!

They should be putting that money into football and basketball.

Heard that the basketball budget jumped up considerably. Hope so. I don’t think Miles would have taken the job without a bigger commitment from SJSU.  The Shark Tank is right down the street if Miles can get something going.

Football has $40+ million going into the new east side football complex.  New locker rooms, coaches offices, meeting rooms, players lounges, etc.... Brennan got a nice raise and so did his assistants.

Baseball desperately needs a new practice field (the old one was lost when they built the golf complex).  They can not always practice at Muni because they share it with the SJ Giants of the California league.  Plus the baseball people donate to baseball, football people donate to football, basketball people....err....well we don’t really have basketball people, but hopefully Miles can start something.

Phase 2 for the softball facility was the locker room and team building fronting 10th St.

The next phase is going to be permanent seating.

Fair question.  Here's another fair question.  Has anyone else come close to that level of widespread dilapidation requiring this level of construction activity?

Doubtful. But it wasn’t all dilapidation. One problem was that the golf training complex took over land that displaced existing baseball, softball, tennis, and soccer facilities, requiring all new facilities to be built for those sports in different locations.  That wasn’t a bad thing.  It forced fundraising to build new facilities and we are way better off now with new stuff.

On main campus the swimming and diving pool was replaced with a brand new facility (Water Polo is big at SJSU). Same with the Student Recreation Center. Required taking out the old 65 meter pool and some old dormitories. Spartan Complex was old and needed remodeling and earthquake retrofitting. We got the State to pay for most of that because it’s student educational facilities.  The old Spartan Gym was remodeled for Volleyball and new basketball locker rooms went in in Spartan Complex for the hoops teams. Gymnastics and Judo (SJSU has the country’s best college Judo program with 40 national titles or something like that. It’s cool when the Olympics come around and the USA team is a bunch of Spartans) facilities were remodeled

Another age old problem at SJSU is that the outdoor athletic facilities are located on the south campus which is about a mile down the road from the main campus.  It’s always been easy for the administration to spend all the money on beautifying the main campus downtown  (which is old, hence my nickname) where they all work every day and ignore the south campus that they don’t see regularly.  Finally got all that rectified.

The south campus is surrounded by other athletic and outdoor activity parks (Happy Hollow Zoo, SJ History Park) from the city as well as industrial parks.   Two facilities across from Spartan Stadium are Municipal Stadium which is a baseball park used by SJSU and the SJ Giants of the Class A California League.  The other is Sharks Ice which is the training facility for the San Jose Sharks as well as one of the largest hockey competition facilities in the west. There are 5 rinks in the building and they are building a brand new 5000 seat hockey arena there as we speak for the Sharks minor league team (Barracudas) to play at.  This new arena will also be the new home for SJSU hockey games.  This displaced parking lots and is why SJSU built a new parking garage on its land that will be used to park fans going to Spartan Stadium, Muni Stadium, and Sharks Ice.  That parking garage will be a money maker for SJSU athletics.

I would say much of our facilities were dilapidated. When I would go to other MWC schools for a football games I was alway impressed with their facilities vs ours. I feel like with this work we are on par with our conference mates, but ours are in newer condition being that they are band new.
