Gonzaga should have joined the MWC

Denver is only a good coach away from emerging as a quality program.

Love Denver's basketball / hockey venue:

Why hasn't the WCC expanded to the Denver Market?!?!

Well, because we are waiting on one of our two ACADEMICALLY ELITE candidates to step up to the plate.

That is

University of Denver @jdgaucho

or

School of Mines @OrediggerPoke

Both schools deliver the Denver Market.   Both schools deliver the State of Colorado.   Both schools have beautiful campuses.   Both schools are natural fits to the WCC.   Just wish that one of them would finally get it going in Hoops.

Colorado Mines delivers the Houston market probably more so than the Denver market.  And you must not have been following Mines in hoops, they've been one of the best in D2 hoops for a number of years (D2 'elite 8' this year and 8 consecutive D2 tournament appearances). Colorado Mines is already better in hoops than the vast majority of WCC teams.

That said - they have zero fit in a religious private school league that would require substantial travel.  They have a great fit in the regional RMAC that keeps students in classes.  Every single Mines basketball player will have at least taken the following courses before graduation: Calculus 1, 2 and 3, differential equations, Chemistry 1 and 2, Physics 1 and 2.

Are Denver and Mines religious schools?  I think Denver was at one time but not anymore.

Neither are.

-Denver is an overpriced private school for the wealthy.

-Mines is a public school offering one of the toughest and most rigorous engineering undergraduate programs in the country. When I attended Mines, the acceptance rate was about 30% and the graduation rate for entering freshman was about 30%; plenty of smart folks that couldn't hack it.

I concede that the MWC isn't currently much of a step up in competition to the WCC, but what would it do to the ratings of both conferences to simply put Gonzaga in the MWC. Just playing a school like  Gonzaga twice has quite an effect on ratings. The MWC's would look quite a bit better and the WCC would look quite a bit worse. This is not insignificant.

Isn’t much?  LOL, it isn’t at all...

What would it do if we put SDSU into the WCC?  See how stupid that sounds?

Colorado School of Mines has a friend in BYU.   BYU will sponsor the School of Mines application if (when?) the School of Mines asks to join the WCC.

Yes, the math classes are hard in the School of Mines.   But, there are tons of eggheads at all these schools.   It can be done!!!

Regarding Denver being a school for rich kids, that's what all of the WCC is (except for us poor BYU folk).   Ask @Joe from WY---Dons alums are the rich kids.

Why is it stupid? Was Gonzaga not seriously considering joining the MWC? My point is that having an extreme (ly good) outlier school like Gonzaga in a conference like the WCC artificially props up their ratings.  If Gonzaga were in the MWC it would similarly elevate each MWC school's ratingsand likely to a higher degree, because the MWC has way more potential than the WCC. Gonzaga is literally the WCC

Bob....don't hate on the WCC.

We need your support!!!

Gonzaga is not here and they DECLINED the MWC and aren’t currently considering it.  So yes, it’s stupid.  SDSU is an outlier school in the MWC with somewhat similar impact.  The Net Ranking gap from #1 to #2 in the WCC is smaller than it is in the MWC this year so there goes that argument.

Let’s evaluate the WCC including SDSU.  See, stupid.

There are not at Mines past freshman year.  It cannot be done at Mines. There is no 'communications' or 'theatre' degree to hide under at Mines.

If that's the case, I guess the focus for the WCC needs to be on adding Denver, and then heavily scheduling School of Mines to improve the NET rating of the WCC.

I wish there weren't so many rich bastards in the WCC (adding School of Mines would have evened things out), but when you have a conference of rich kid schools, what are you going to do?!?!

Alas.... BYU will remain the one "poor kid" school in the WCC.

NorCal, if you can't see how playing road games against schools like San Jose St and UNLV would have prepared the Zags to handle a middling basketball program from Waco TX, then you really don't know much about college basketball.  It takes tough road games to build a championship level program and the Zags just can't get that level of competition in the lowly WCC.

Educate yourself, man!  You're making a fool of yourself on this thread.  You should spend a day reading nothing but posts from Ph and 18.  Those guys have forgotten more about college basketball than you will ever know.

D2 teams don't figure into NET rating.  It would be terrible for the perception of any WCC team to schedule and most likely lose to Mines.

I do agree with you, Denver University is a natural fit with the WCC. DU even offers critical degrees for the barista workforce such as: Art History, Media Studies, Global Studies, Socio-Legal Studies,  Gender and Women's Studies, Performance, Studio Art, Pre-Art Conservation, Theatre,

UNLV?  LMAO!  It’s not 1990 anymore.  UNLV is no more difficult than Portland.  Zags get plenty of road trip testing in OOC.  They don’t need the MWC.

But they do!   Gonzaga would have rolled the Bears if only they would have had some tough conference road games.  The fact that BYU beat SDSU & USU and the WCC has been ranked higher than the MW for the last 5 years or so does not matter in regards to preparing a team for March.

Nothing can prepare a team for the post season like playing a road game in vegas.  The opposing players look up into the rafters and see those banners with their moth holes and it strikes fear into their hearts.  It's a character building experience that just can't be duplicated in the WCC.   It toughens them up for post season play.

Inconvenient data for some of you delusional folks...  below are the Net Rankings by conference standing for the two conferences...  WCC is better than the MWC EVERYWHERE except in the 3-5 standing range.  The Avg Net Ranking for the WCC is 124.9 and 158.1 for the MWC.  Most every conference ranking system the last several years has rated the WCC higher.  You all want to talk about the Gonzaga outlier?  The MWC has the same thing with SDSU.  The ranking gap between 1&2 is actually SMALLER in the WCC than it is here.  Gonzaga is exactly 1.25 standard deviations from the conference average while SDSU is 1.19 (fairly comparable).  Every talking point you all blindly regurgitate is utter nonsense.  No empirical case can be made to support the MWCBoard fairytale that the MWC is even better than the WCC let alone head and shoulders better.  There’s a reason Gonzaga wanted nothing to do with you guys after taking a closer look.  😂

There are 2 moth-holed banners waving in the USF gym...  twice as intimidating as the lone banner at UNLV.

They are welcome to join with the Zags.  This board could use more fans who peacock over antique banners.

Like UNLV, pretty sure those from USF are made from papyrus.

@Joe from WY is a proud Dons fan, so he's probably seen their gym and Championship banners up close.
