Joking aside.  I like Reno.  Good food.  Stuff to do. Pyramid lake not far away.   It has some ugly parts but most cities do.

Reno’s downtown - north of the river, south of 80 - is a dump. Gambling is less and less of an influence. I’ll probably be dead before that mess is cleaned up but I like it here. So who gives two chits!

OK, so they've cleared a lot of the 1960-era Motels out.  The Sands casino was just totally  renovated.

The closed Harrahs casino  has 3 high-rises that are all  in the process of conversion into condos and or apartments. And they  will redo the old Harrahs concert plaza.

They  leveled an entire  block of neglected  houses along Center and 6th streets, is going to be 9 stories of UNR associated housing. UNR wants to take over the influence of N. downtown, and they are doing it.

They just rebuilt N. Virginia St thru campus  from I-80 up past Lawlor.

They just rebuilt S. Virginia Street thru "Midtown". The numerous home-grown bars and restaurants along it will come back strong once the Covid crap is finally over.

the Old Town Square mall area along Plumb and SVA has been building new condos for past 2-3 years.

The Old Shoppers Square strip mall across the street from it currently being totally rebuilt. Will have new entertainment venues. No gaming.

They're moving the Homeless kitchen on Record Street down W. 4th street  about a mile to an industrial area away from downtown and there will be a new homeless "village". Shelter too..... Its almost done.

oh yeah, if any Reno/Sparks peeps want to help do the KTMB  river cleanup thing, here is the link. Saturday May 1st

I've done this about 9 times, its fun.  Once I was out at McCarran Ranch and we got 55 tires that had been thrown off a cliff from the I-80 highway for about  40 years.

They get 800 people area wide. 20 venues.

they do it 2x a year.

I see the progress. I drive down there because I’m interested to see what’s been razed. The “beer district” is cool. It just needs so much done it’s too bad they let it get to this point.

Plenty of lists saying the opposite.

Crime, homelessness and cost of housing are drawbacks.

Paradise if you like the outdoors or are starting a dental practice.

Reno is more or less a giant version of Elko.

I found a pistol under the bedside phone table at an elko motel 6 once. So in Reno, would it he a sawed off shotgun?

Planning is an exercise of power, and in a modern state much real power is suffused with boredom. The agents of planning are usually boring; the planning process is boring; the implementation of plans is always boring. In a democracy boredom works for bureaucracies and corporations as smell works for skunk. It keeps danger away. Power does not have to be exercised behind the scenes. It can be open. The audience is asleep. The modern world is forged amidst our inattention.

Could be anything up to an Uzi in that place, I'd reckon.

I was joking above.

Reno was great when I lived there and it continues to get better.  Mid-town’s transformation has been amazing.  Started with private investment since the recession and now the city has improved the roads, widened the sidewalks, buried telephone lines and installed new light posts and artwork.

UNR is growing and building south towards downtown which will clean up the bad section @NevadaFanmentioned within 10 years.

Great place to live.

Reno is fine and close to a lot of great outdoor spots.. It’s better than ABQ and Fresno for sure.

Not sure why Albuquerque gets such a bad rap. I like the city TBH. To each their own but the only three MWC cities I wouldn’t live in are San Jose, Laramie, and Fresno.

Should I track down the value today of the shit box house in san jose my parents owned when my mom was pregnant with me and see what I could buy with that number in every other city in the mwc?

People like to talk about objective metrics. Don't get much more objective than that.

The SJ hate on this thread is funny.

Fresno's great, too.

Fresno's great, too.

Most people think housing is too expensive in SJ.

Um, there is no such thing as too expensive.  The value states objectively that people are willing to pay more for housing in san jose than most other cities in the mw. Making it objectively a better city.
