Josh Hawley Wants Govt Subsidized $16.50/hr Minimum Wage

Recommended Posts

Josh Hawley is jumping on the populist minimum wage issue with what he calls the "The Blue Collar Bonus".

Instead of business paying higher wages, Hawley proposes that the government pay workers a higher wage using a tax credit. Basically he would transfer part of the labor cost from business to government.

"The Blue Collar Bonus" is said to consist of:

  • A refundable tax credit of 50% of the difference between the actual lower wage and $16.50/hr, paid out in quarterly installments. The $16.50 would be tied to the Consumer Price Index.
  • It is only for 40 hours or less of weekly work. More hours or second jobs would not be eligible.
  • It only applies to workers with valid Social Security numbers

Hawley's proposal would also immediately hike minimum wage this year on large corporations to $15.

The current Democrat plan calls for minimum wage increases by all employers each year until it reached $15 in 2025.

Not shocking at all. Giving stuff to GOP voters, punishing the liberal elite on the Left Coast, keeping brown people out of America. That is the three-legged party platform of the populist GOP.

Planning is an exercise of power, and in a modern state much real power is suffused with boredom. The agents of planning are usually boring; the planning process is boring; the implementation of plans is always boring. In a democracy boredom works for bureaucracies and corporations as smell works for skunk. It keeps danger away. Power does not have to be exercised behind the scenes. It can be open. The audience is asleep. The modern world is forged amidst our inattention.
