Anyone buy a watch recently?

My discretionary purchases this year have been mostly confined to men's fragrances. So no new watches, but the old ones smell f*cking great.

To answer your question though, I'm in the process of selling my car and depending if it hit a certain number, I'm going to purchase the Zenith Chronomaster Sport I've wanted for awhile. If I don't sell my car for as much, then I'll have to postpone the purchase and use the money for our move.

Good luck on the sale.  That would be a nice purchase

Not so much as a teaming up since, as with Omega, they're owned by the Swatch Group.

Yup. And IMO both are abominations, nothing more than marketing novelties that cheapen two historic legacy watchmakers.

I really tried to shelve any sense of snobbery and simply appreciate the fact that these Frankenbrands provide a gateway opportunity for more people to get into the hobby and/or acquire a watch "by" Omega or Blancpain, but I just can't get past the idea of a large marketing department simply looking for ways to increase revenue at the expense of diluting a brand's heritage.

Ford almost killed Jaguar via horizontal integration; IMO this is more insidious. And hideous. But to each their own I suppose.

Eh, I don't find it that bad as long as you acknowledge what it is which is a Swatch. It's the buyers that's are trying to pass off their Swatch as an omega or blancpain as if they contain the same historic movements that can get annoyingly eye -rolly. Otherwise they are fun toys that shout out to the unique designs of omega and blancpain.

Had a patient a couple weeks ago make a comment on my "Sun" asking if was a Swatch, I told him good eye, it was . He then reminisced about his old Swatch he had when he was younger and it was a nice conversation and not once did the term "Omega" come up.

Horological Legos.

Now, a friend of mine was recently promoted to the global head of marketing for a Fortune 300 company, and Legos are one of his biggest passions, so there's nothing wrong with that. I'm glad people enjoy them. But I see it as nothing more than a whorish move by Swatch Group that does cheapen the brands - again, IMO of course.

I see where you're coming from. There is a small line between introducing new ideas in a company to grow the brand and preventing it from becoming stale, and being tacky and tarnishing the brand. It's going to come down to the individual's subjective opinion. With me I feel they skirted the line, but in your opinion it they overshot it.

Next time my speedmaster patient comes in, I'm curious what he thinks. If he feels his omega feels cheaper with the moonswatch now out there or if he enjoys the added spotlight on it. My Hyde Park SA loves them and even had me get him the Mars while we were in Barcelona, but I wonder if the Omega boutique guys feels the opposite.

I'm not necessarily opposed to them.  If they draw younguns into wearing a real watch, I'm all for it.  Nobody thinks that Moonswatch is a real Speedy.

The people wearing flat-out fake watches are the true worthless scum.  The "homage" people aren't too far behind.  Imagine getting mugged and shot for the fake Rolex you smuggled into the country just so you could impress realtors, valet parkers and bathroom attendants.

My old man is a reformed certified dipshit in this regard. I think I have finally weened him off his "but it looks JUST LIKE THE REAL THING and only cost me $10."

I've put the same scenario to him - is it worth it to get shot for a $10 watch??

Not to mention buying a fake watch supports all sorts of f*cked up crime including human trafficking.

Finally found the green strap for the Miss's Oris Bronze Cotton Candy. She's been looking for it for years and Oris wasn't able to provide the accessory until recently. Gonna surprise her for her bday :)

That looks awesome man. I really dig on my Perlon straps - arguably my favorite due to the ease of use and near-infinite adjustability, light weight, and texture. Much prefer Perlon over Zulu/single-pass NATO straps.

I've never used one, but they seem really cool. Love the way they look too. I might be "borrowing" her watch more often in the future

I think it’s odd that they used a mechanical movement. If I’m buying a toy watch, I don’t want to wind it.

Oh wow. I didn't even know that. I assumed they used the same Swatch quartz movement that was used in the MoonSwatch.
