That lume shot made me spill my milkshake a little.

It's a pretty nice looking one. I did read that the lume brightness on GSs though don't reach close to Rolex/Tudor levels though unfortunately. I know my gf's Oris is way dimmer than mine.

That surprises me, considering Luminova and Super-Luminova are from Japan and Seiko is the de facto king of lume.

It was just a couple ppl in a Grand Seiko group comparing it to their rolexes. They might have been full of it.

Either way, that GS GMT is a work of art, and the lume compliments it nicely. Mix equal parts dress watch and Explorer, stir gently, and garnish with lume. Quite possibly might be my favorite GS model I've ever seen.

When my Seiko is fully charge, that lume is the brightest one in my box. De facto king of lume for sure.

It's a stunner for sure. I personally think it's better than their famous magnetic quartz watch's lume:

It's the association I've always had with them - the Orange Monster, Tuna, and Turtle are all known for überlume. Of course 5-figure divers will have killer lume, but I'm yet to see one that can out-lume a 3-figure Seiko.

Went looking to see who else crushes it and found this - five of their "top 9" are Seikos. Figures... lol.

I've always preferred tritium for multiple color applications for lume purposes (i.e., Ball), though that's beautiful for sure.

We've kept this thread going for over a year and a half. Well done, guys.

Here's a watch I think I posted upthread (maybe not?) that I had bought as a special-purpose watch for a particular function. Certina sits on the same strata as Hamilton - one might say they are Europe's Hamilton (in terms of popularity and price point). They used to be heavily involved in motorsport sponsorship and were the official timekeeper of the FIA World Rally Championship, but I can't find any mention of that anymore on their website. Anyway, they've been in the game for a century and a half, have a decent track record of innovation, and make some nice watches that are eminently affordable here due to their obscurity. Ceramic bezel and domed crystal are both nice touches. The white Perlon strap is aftermarket.

Hello, hello horology aficionados. I spent many days at the beach this summer. And will continue to take weekend trips to the beach. Kids are getting into boogie boarding. So, I need a proper water sport watch now.

I'm considering the Luminox #tide ECO or the Citizen Promaster.

Was considering a G-Shock, but hate that they are all over 45mm big.

Dude! I was thinking about posting a welfare check... haven't seen you around for a while man.

What's your budget? I have a couple Promasters - an EcoDrive and a Marina Militare (NY0041). Can't speak highly enough of either of them. I know nothing of the Luminox watch you linked to but I really like the idea.

I ended up going with neither of the above. I found an Orient model (The Defender) that checked all my boxes. And it was way more reasonably priced so I went with it. Left monies in my budget to spend on craft beer to stock up on.

Congrats on the purchase - that's a nice looking watch. Orient makes fine watches that punch above their weight. Take pride in the fact it has an in house movement. Screw down crown and 100m WR will suit you well - just make sure it's screwed down when you get wet. 😬

I thought Seiko watches were on the low end kind of like Timex. Wrong. Also, didn't know Timex made a $450 watch. I was checking out some GS and came across this used Seiko. Hey, free shipping. 👍

Seiko fanbois represent a separate silo of collectors. And understandably so - Seiko is the oldest watchmaker in not just Japan but all of Asia, with roots dating back to the late 19th century, giving them a heritage that is older than many Swiss makers of note, including Rolex. They are as horological accomplished as many Swiss makers, and have pushed Rolex and Omega for depth records with their dive watches. Vintage Seiko's like the one @smltwnrckr inherited are grails for a lot of watch guys, whether Seiko fanbois or not.

Well AA it's been about four months since you received the Mako... thoughts? :hmmm:

It doesn't seem to have the backup power it claims. But other than that, I really enjoy wearing it. I'm more of a casual dress guy but it looks great for any occasion. 👍

How long have you observe the power reserve's duration to be? FWIW, while it depends on the efficiency of a given movement, I've found that "normal" wear translates to about 6 hrs of power reserve per hour worn.

Orient claims 40-hour power backup. But you might be right, I might not be wearing it long enough when I do. I will keep better track of that. 🤔

You see the ultra deep yet? Watch looks insanely thick.
