Watches

Recommended Posts

Was just out helping my mom look at watches for my dad as a wedding anniversary gift. Saw this (field?) watch on clearance for under $100 and grabbed it. Been meaning to try out an eco drive for a while, so this will give me a nice affordable chance to give this guy a whirl. Also adds some green to my collection.

Planning is an exercise of power, and in a modern state much real power is suffused with boredom. The agents of planning are usually boring; the planning process is boring; the implementation of plans is always boring. In a democracy boredom works for bureaucracies and corporations as smell works for skunk. It keeps danger away. Power does not have to be exercised behind the scenes. It can be open. The audience is asleep. The modern world is forged amidst our inattention.

I remember that story. Now that you missed that opportunity, which reference are you now waiting for? Or did your oath +++++ you to never realistically be able to buy a speedy because you can't stop buying other watches?

No idea, because the answer to the second question is "yes." :suicide:

Oh man that sucks. You're going to have to "update" the contract with the bump...

Small price to pay for how blessed I am* to have her by my side.

*85-90% of the time. The other 10-15% of the time I rather have the watch.

I know how that is. I keep doing that with the ck2998 pulsometer. Was around $6k new, dropped to $3k shortly after. Now you can't find one for under $10k. I keep checking every few months though to see if the prices settle back down.

Which is the better chronograph? El primero sport or Speedmaster professional?

To make it more even, I'm refering to a 'non-321' Speedmaster movement.

Even though imho it doesn't compare to the other two, I'll throw in the Daytona.

Since you are building your collection I would say the Speedy.  Unless a Chrono is your top category that you want in your collection.  If not, then put the largest investments in either the grail category or into an already identified grail watch.

Are you comparing the movement or the watch?

The El Primero is as historic a movement as the Speedy is a watch. If we are excluding the OG Cal. 321 (and even if we weren't, tbh), than the movement award goes to Zenith (which, btw, is what powered the Daytona until ca. 2001). Go check out an El Primero under an exhibition caseback sometime... you'll spill your milkshake a little.

However, if you're to purchase just one of those, Speedmaster all day. It's place in horological chronography is unparalleled.

Lastly, for market value appreciation, IMO the Daytona is likely the best choice.

A big part of me wants the chronograph to be my big grail watch and save for a precious metal Speedmaster in like 30 years (platinum 321 or yg 3861 🤤) and get the zenith sooner.

Other part wants me knows that no collection is complete without a speedy and wants a new 3861 or slightly used ck2998 now.

That's good info to see how each 'watch' and 'movement' is viewed from an horology stand point. I've tried on the white dial El primero and the movement is amazing looking, except I don't like star that much because it reminds me of the dallas cowboys (ugh).

Tbh I think the chronomter grade decorated movements they supplied to Concord and Rolex were far sexier - as seen through the Impresario's casebook (posted upthread):

Zenith is a haute horlogerie maker to be sure, but IMHO their watches have never hit that aesthetic sweet spot of so many others.

I thought I kicked the habit but I just preordered the all metal CasiOak G-Shock. I never thought I’d want one but it looks cooler than the real AP RO.

Having held several APROs in the hand I just can't see spending the money.

If I could get access to the Daytona at MSRP, I would buy it....

...and then flip it and buy the other two with the profit.

Personally, I don't think you can go wrong with either the Speedy or Zenith.  The Speedy with the new metas certified co-axial escapement movement would probably be my choice, but I'm an Omega fan, so take that for what it's worth.
