The way people are attached to their cell phones these days, why would anyone need a watch?

Cell phones are evolving to smart watches. Apple and Samsung have models that connect to wrist watches each had developed, respectively.

Also, a watch is/can be a status symbol. Fashion. It adds to ones style. Pre-2020 covid, when I threw on a suit or a nice blazer or sports coat for a nice occasion, one of my watches was worn. And as has been mentioned, they are still practical.

I’ve been wanting to buy a watch for a couple reasons, but one main one is that it can help me break the habit of pulling out my phone instinctively when I have nothing to do. Part of the reason I take my phone out is to see what time it is, but it almost inevitably leads to me unlocking it and zoning out while I check alerts and whatnot. Watches also just look classy; as someone pointed out earlier, it’s one of the few masculine accessories out there.

Apple Watch is great for discretely checking messages etc...but after wearing mechanical art, it’s not hard to break that phone habit.

Well I've narrowed it down between the 58 and the bronze. Or maybe I'll come to my senses and use the extra money to help pay for an exotic trip or something...;)

The top color combination stands out more. Looks nicer.

If you're not addicted to a cell phone then a watch is a necessity.  Especially when in a 'Vegas casino (when the quarantine is over) since they don't have clocks.

"Fashion" is for my wife and her girlfriends (and David from Schitt's Creek); "style" is for men.

Leave chasing increasingly stupid and always ephemeral trends to the fairer sex and the youngbloods who don't know any better; the best a man can pursue is refinement of classic, timeless style. All IMO of course.

You can't go wrong with either of these, but keep in mind the stainless case - while less distinctive - will dress up to a higher degree of formality. It's difficult to get bronze to wear well with a suit, especially once the patina starts to set in. And the distinctive handset (Longines is the only other brand I can think of that uses a similar style hour hand) makes the BB distinctive regardless.

On the other hand, if you are looking to stay in the "tool watch" strata, the bronze would be my choice.

Stoked for you regardless of which one you choose tho. The BB is a watch that will outlive you and will make a nice heirloom. And as a bonus, Rolex's ability to ratchet up price points across their line will inevitably filter its way down to the Tudor line as well (esp. since Rolex is now making Tudor's movement in-house), making it more likely that they will appreciate in value over time.

That's a really good point. I have smaller wrists too, so the bronze might be a tad too big as well. Well guess all thats left is trying them on at the jewelry store. Really appreciated your advice.

Definitely. I also prefer total minimalism, so i think its sharper without the numbers on the dial. And the gold/silver combo is more versatile imo.

Planning is an exercise of power, and in a modern state much real power is suffused with boredom. The agents of planning are usually boring; the planning process is boring; the implementation of plans is always boring. In a democracy boredom works for bureaucracies and corporations as smell works for skunk. It keeps danger away. Power does not have to be exercised behind the scenes. It can be open. The audience is asleep. The modern world is forged amidst our inattention.

This was my last watch purchase, in late-2019. Eterna is one of the historic Swiss watch brands (ETA movements, which power a disproportionate number of Swiss automatics, were developed by Eterna). The Granges was made to celebrate their 160th anniversary.

This is one of only 100 that were made (there are an additional four variants with 100 examples of each). The movement was made in-house and is the thinnest automatic big date movement in existence. The entire case is curved in design to accommodate the movement, as are the convex dial and minute and second hands.

Have you seen one available to purchase  or is it like Rolex where you have to get on a waiting list? Interestingly, there are a couple of these 79030 pre-owned on Crown and Caliber that are going for about $700 more than retail. It might indicate a good choice for an investment. I like the steel better as well.

I didn't even think of this. Our local Rolex dealer says they have it available but I wonder if it's just for order like you say. I checked ebay just to see, and they are going for more than the brand new ones listed as well.

Hey @Stealthlobo here is my favorite dive watch. Oris is one of those often-overlooked brands that is more popular in Europe than in the North American market. They were founded a year prior to Rolex and are still independently owned. Their tag line is, "Real watches for real people." And Oris is one of those few brands that truly punches above its weight - you'll be hard pressed to match the quality, fit, and finish for anything less than 3x their retail cost.

The Aquis is their professional-grade dive watch. It is unique and distinctive in appearance - no one that knows watches will ever mistake it for anything else. This was their first ceramic bezel release (my one gripe with the BB - aluminum bezels are more prone to scratching) - it was also my first (and to date only) ceramic bezel dive watch, and has convinced me to opt for the ceramic bezel version when I buy my Submariner.  If I was to sell off all my watches but one, this would be in contention to be the keeper.

This might be in part because until not too long ago, Tudor used ETA/Selita movements which are far less expensive to service.

Before you plunk down the change it might be worth researching this price discrepancy a little to see if there are any reported issues with the 'new' movement (I'd be surprised tho given Rolex has their three-hand movement mfg process on lock).

Another '+' for the 58 - the indices suit the watch better IMO.

You have several really nice options that come in at or under the acquisition cost of a Tudor.

But if you find yourself drawn to the Tudor, you won't regret the purchase. It is a true "GADA" (go anywhere, do anything) watch IMO - just as at home in a t-shirt as in a suit. Here's a stock photo from an article online that shows how well it dresses up:

Heh, it's definitely a hot watch. I love the Rolex feel without the Rolex price.

those are handsome watches.

If your wedding ring is silver, I'd get that one.  If it's gold, the other one.

I had a Microsoft band, and my wife has an apple watch.  I hated charging it, and syncing it and all that.  I'm not into the smart watches myself, but my wife likes hers.

I like wearing a quality analog watch when wearing a suit like you mentioned.

A digital Timex or Casio is also a tool when camping or hiking.
