trump Impeachment Trial Thread

Impeaching Trump isn’t going to change the minds of the millions that support him. If anything it will make the crazies crazier. And it will give him another platform to stir them up again. Not a wise thing to do. But hey go ahead revenge is sweet and who needs a lame attempt at unity anyway.

It is not just about Democrats getting revenge.

Impeachment may be turning into a battle for control of the GOP between factions. There appears to be a developing move among some Republicans to both wrestle party control from Trump and end the unknown of will he or won't he run in 2024.

Exactly, get the republicans on record - Who cares about the trump cult, they will back him regardless of the crimes he's committed, they are that mentally far gone............this is to see if the rest of the republican party is OK with stirring up insurrection & sedition - which I'd wager most of the country is against - So let the 25-30% of trump lunatics crap themselves about this impeachment. It's the republican party that has to deal with the fallout from the trump era, so get them on record.

Secondly, if the republican spent years on endless BENGHAZI investigations, you absolutely know that had trump been a democrat they would have not wasted a nano-second to impeach, try & convict over what trump had done

Trump might try and run again, but his chances of winning are nil and zero. Besides the Dems would just stuff the ballot boxes again.😃

What’s the point really.. so that he won’t run in 2024? This seems stupid to me. Keeps him in the news front and center.

Because otherwise @soupslam1‘s “a President can literally do anything they want in their last couple weeks of their term except launch a nuke” opinion would essentially be reality. I mean seriously, should it be the case that once a President has run out the clock to the point where there isn’t enough time to remove them from office before their term is up they can do anything without facing consequences? A President just has to wait until they have 4-5 weeks left in their term and suddenly they are literally above the law?

I love the news coverage that is portraying Mitch McConnell as somehow torn over this impeachment vote.  The idea that Mitch McConnell operates on any sense of moral principle other than what in his reptilian best interest is laughable.  To the extent McConnell votes to convict Trump it will be because he thinks he can play Brutus in his own Julius Caesar play.  If Mitch can lobby the votes to get to 67 he will Murder trump politically.    If he cannot, he will vote to acquit.

McConnell would love nothing more than to remove the Trumpist albatross from around his neck.  He can destroy the populist masses and have the establishment cons ascend without having to deal with Trump for god knows how many more election cycles.  To the extent all of this "moral struggle" allows him to waste Biden's time, the better.

Democrats need to know that Mitch is not their buddy.  To the extent that McConnell is successful in his mission to kill Donald Trump is really of little consequence to Democrats.  Trump is no longer president so the best thing to do is get a speedy trial of no more than one day presenting evidence and to get to a vote.  This stuff is already baked in so stringing this out for days and weeks is not going to change the final outcome.

Getting every Republican on record is a win/win for Democrats.  Either there will be a conjob internal civil war or they can all be painted as Trumpist insurrectionists.

It's called accountability, something the GOP once stood for. The crazies won't be calmed by anything other than their representatives standing up and telling them the truth, they were fed the Big Lie for two months.

The Milwaukee newspaper wrote an editorial a few days ago calling for Johnson to resign.

Ron Johnson asked to be able to respond to the editorial. The newspaper published it but added 19 editorial footnotes to "provide additional context so that readers have a fuller understanding of the senator's actions."

I once had a modicum of respect for Johnson. Now, however, he's basically Wisconsin's version of Devin Nunes and Kevin McCarthy, aka Dweedledumb and Dweedledundee.

They expect everyone to cower in fear like Republicans such as Boehner and Paul Ryan do when the teaparty, QAnon, Trumpist idiots act like idiots.

Impeachment trials can not be filibustered.

Nor can the trial proceed without the senate rules in place. But it’s Akkula, let him huff paint and rant.

We’re all sitting in the dugout. Thinking we should pitch. How you gonna throw a shutout when all you do is bitch.

When only 3 Republicans vote to convict, it will illustrate the ridiculousness of thinking that somehow Democrats are going to be able to get 60 votes for anything.  If such a clear case cannot draw 10-20 Republicans the idea the Democrats can get to 60 for anything is a farce and just shows the ridiculousness of the filibuster as somehow making actions in the senate "more moderate."

That does not track, at all.  Bipartisan legislation is passed all the time and always has.

What major legislation has passed without reconciliation?  Obamacare was passed that way...giant Republican tax cuts for the wealthy too.  In the last 15 years what has passed?  We cannot even keep the government funded with continuing resolutions without being on the brink of a shut down every time they need to pass something through the senate.

Here are the major pieces of legislation passed by the 116th congress.

Great, so they passed laws for foreign countries and BARELY got anything done for Covid with a gun to their head and a spendthrift president.  The trade deal was basically only a tweak of NAFTA.  You call this major legislation?

Just be honest, you think the fact that the senate cannot get major bills done to address major problems is a feature and not a bug, like McConnell.  I can accept that but let's not pretend that somehow the filibuster just "moderates" legislation but the country's important business actually gets done.

I don't define what "major legislation" is.  The fact is every congress passes significant legislation.

Sorry that does not jive with talking points memo.

Even that super mean 114th congress where the GOP took back the Senate with Evil Mitch pass the following;

Great, just because you can name 50 post offices with 100 votes doesn't make you a productive congress.
