Does Dixie State change their name any time soon?

They recently voted to do it.   So it looks like it is going to happen.   Not sure on the time frame.

Most popular name idea I read is "St. George State University" (kind of awkward, but maybe just because it isn't familiar).

Anything but Dixie State will be an improvement.

Well, Jeffery Epstein State excluded!

Nope.  Thanks primarily to the MWC, but also the other G5 conferences and P5 money games,  NMSU FBS schedules look just fine out for the next 4 years.  Beating an MWC team in USU in the 2017 Arizona Bowl certainly helped.  Frankly,  there is zero reason to drop down as long as G5 teams schedule games.  We have always been a basketball school first and foremost, but i'll take FBS games over FCS games any day.  It's also important to point out that NMSU balances its athletic budget, so it isn't burning through cash it doesn't have.

Good to hear, but that’s only for the short term. Prostituting your program out even if you can schedule games is not a viable long term solution to success. The Arizona Bowl victory was three years ago, so as great as that was for your program it’s value has been outlived and I think deciding not to play this season will have a far greater impact on the program.

If the WAC were able to attain FBS status, mentioned earlier in the thread, then I hope for your program’s sake it would be reconsidered. Geographically and competitively, I still think this would be the best fit for your program.

How do you figure? If by D1, you mean FBS and FCS, there are more than. 7 in California (7 FBS schools plus Davis, Sac State, Cal Poly, maybe another I can't think of). Utah has three FBS schools plus a couple FCS schools. These WAC teams are going to be FCS. Maybe someday they'll move up, but that might be years from now.

The best college football game I ever saw was a WAC game. October 4, 1986 - San Jose State vs #19 Fresno State. The Spartans rallied to win it 45-41 and Sports Illustrated chose it as their Game of the Year.

Correction: it wasn't a WAC game. Thanks gaucho. I'm getting old and forgetful. :oldman: But I do remember it was a great game.

I'll add a few more---

4- Pac 12: Cal, Stanford, UCLA, and USC

3- MWC: San Jose St, Fresno St, and San Diego St

4- FCS: UC Davis, Cal Poly, Sacramento St, and San Diego

2- DII: Humboldt St and Azusa Pacific

8- DIII: Cal Lutheran, Chapman, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, La Verne, Occidental, Pomona-Pitzer, Redlands, and Whittier

1- NAIA: Menlo

Then there is all of the JC that play football also, what does Utah have (Snow and anyone else?).  On a side note it's not like Weber St (Big Sky), Southern Utah (Big Sky), and Dixie St (WAC: January of 2019 started transition to DI/FCS) aren't already FCS (Utah Valley is also FCS in the WAC as a non-football school).

Didn't Humboldt kill their program?  I want to say Azusa Pacific did, too.

Yes, both D2 programs are now dead. Sadly.

Menlo College dropped football a few years ago.

Dixie State’s president said they want a name that better conveys their status as a polytechnic university.  Based on that comment I’m thinking they’ll end up as Utah Tech or Utah Poly.

I went to Google and typed Utah Poly and it continued on it's own to show Utah Polygamy. :D Thanks for the laugh Google.

UNLV is probably not the best example of long term success for football.  Neither is UNM.  But one could say all three schools have had sustained success in basketball.  I also don't think any of the teams should talk about dropping down, though win rate would go up quickly.  I could use similar examples in CUSA and Sun Belt - see UTEP.  P5 football is played at a higher level than G5.  G5 FBS is played at a higher level than FCS, and so on.  If NMSU ever has to drop down 5 or 10 years down the road, so be it.  We could also probably win a national championship in basketball too if we dropped, but i sure wouldn't want to go to the games.  Best case scenario is an all sports conference and that will always be our best option.  But easily the next best option from a fan standpoint, and it isn't close, is watching G5 games including our 2 rivals close to home, while having our oly sports in the WAC.  Onward and upward.  I am fine with people saying things like prostituting, but playing 10 games a year against G5 teams is not what i call prostituting.  Opinions differ.

Strictly from a MWC selfish standpoint,  i would think they want as many fans watching their games as possible.  Playing teams out west is probably a good thing for the conference.  I watch more MWC football and basketball because of the common opponents.  I probably would have no desire to watch a random USU vs UNM game if we weren't playing either.  Just another thought.
