As Bad As TJ Otzelberger Has Been This Year

Recommended Posts

DRF has to be 1,000,000% committed to him and do whatever it takes to see that he wins.

If he’s fired, that would be three straight head coaches fired at UNLV.  At that point, there is ZERO chance that an up and coming coach who is any good would wanna come here.

If he’s fired after this year, not even a coach desperate to get a head coaching job would wanna come here.

The bottom line is that it’s self-punishing to keep firing coaches.

For $2 million a year and a guaranteed PERS payday they would line up to get the UNLV job.  Just have to get a pres and AD who aren’t afraid to hire the right guy/risky guy.  Houston lost forever and finally they took a risk on a winner.  Guess what, they are winning.  Might be texting too much, but they are winnin.

He won't get fired unless a scandal happens. He might be gently told to look for a new job if he wins like 3 games, though.

They will win more than three games.  Conference is especially amenable to winning games.

He’s not getting fired after this year. Even if you don’t win a game (highly unlikely) he won’t be fired.

Okay, if that's true, what does that say about your football team? Who was the last UNLV football coach who wasn't fired-- John Robinson? If he wasn't, he should have been.

His seat is not one bit warm. And won't be for a while.

Yeah, I agree. You have to give them at least a couple of years to show they can reverse the nose dive and are actually rising.

I hate it when fans say “it’s a complete rebuild and a new coach deserves a full 5 years to show he can do it.” That kind of mentality is right out of The NY Times Best Selling book: “Celebrate Mediocrity: It’s Your Best Friend and Lover”.

When a good coach takes over, he should look on the roster and determine who his best players are. Then he should create an offense and defense that maximizes the impact they can contribute for year 1.

An example of this in FB: If it means using a triple option instead of a pro style offense to be competitive and be able to win some games, you do it. Then as you recruit more good players that’ll work great in the system you ultimately want, then you can make the slow transition.

JR wasn’t just the UNLV FB coach, he was also the AD. And the prez at the time pretty much let him do whatever he wanted.

Without looking it up, is Lon Kruger the only coach in UNLV football or basketball history that wasn't fired?

Maybe a football coach back in the 80s?

Well, Grgurich almost died. Does that count?

Silly to think that Otz could be fired after this season if they have a lousy record.  He’s a very good coach and he’s in the process of building a strong program.  Hiccups so far this year but his M.O. is for his teams to show steady improvement over the course of the season.  Some top recruits coming in next season and only Diong (maybe Hamilton) exiting. I had them pegged for 5th in the MWC this year because of their inexperience together and the problems caused by COVID-19 in building team chemistry.

These threads are ridiculous. They are usually started by trolls or the unstable UNLV poster. This is more of the same. Nobody going anywhere as it should be. PH is thumping his chest one week and can’t take a shit except on this board the next.

Why am I even posting ? Oh yeah, Mug needs a buck because this is only click bait at best.
