Georgia Senate Runoff Thread

Recommended Posts

Unless there's a significant tabulation error, both of the Senate races in Georgia are headed to a runoff. The runoff is held on January 5th. If the Democrats win both seats, there will be a 50-50 split. That enables Kamala to be the tiebreaker. If the GOP wins either election, Mitch remains Senate Majority Leader.

This is a running thread to discuss the races and any new developments. I'll be keeping an eye on polling as well. There was a polling error in the 2020 General Election, but Georgia was one of the states where polling fared best.

In these sort of elections, turnout is particularly important. Usually, low propensity voters don't show up, giving the GOP an advantage. Their base is strong enough to carry a state like Georgia. But will Trump's loss impact the election? Will many of Trump’s rural supporters not show up? Would a COVID-19 outbreak in Georgia impact the race?

I wonder about the spending strategy. Do the Republicans just focus on Perdue with the hope that he could drag Loeffler across the line or do they spend evenly. Can the Dems afford to do this? Warnock has the best political ad I’ve seen in years.

We’re all sitting in the dugout. Thinking we should pitch. How you gonna throw a shutout when all you do is bitch.

More of this in my veins

Both Republicans are crooks. Will Georgians care?

Biden was a crook too and it didn’t seem to matter to the majority of Americans

If he was (that's disputed), he was clearly the lesser of two evils.

Warnock seems like a good guy. Ossoff is a typical corporate Dem, not sure if he's ever been accused of anything.

On the other hand, both Perdue and Loeffler pretty clearly are corrupt.

The GOP strategy was to accuse Ossoff of being close with China and terrorists. They also tied him to the left

This election should be near 100% on a voting rights bill and the dream act being put on the table.  It shouldn't be a choice on democrats vs republicans but a choice whether they will choose for a party who will enact civil rights or not.  Whites will have to decide if they are going to turn out to try to stop voting rights or to defend the legacy of Jim Crow.  John Lewis, Stacey Abrams, and Kamala Harris will be the main attraction with the symbolism of Kamala being able to turn in the deciding vote for civil rights and the Dream Act.

Attila the Hun and the debate Ducker will have to come up with a platform since they will not have Trump on the top of the ticket.  Will Republicans actually come out in person and vote without the messiah on the ticket?  I am hoping Republicans eschew mail in voting again and then flake out.

There will be no ticket splitting here.  We are going to either get two Republican Senators or two Democrats.

Minorities and white Democrats will have the opportunity to finally beat the old south and get voting rights across the country.

This election won't be about policies.

It will be about personalities, like it usually is.

There will be ads about the affairs of the candidates, and whether they said something rude in high school.

We will see if Democrats can get the same turnout for a special election when Trump is not a factor.  Republicans will be very motivated since the Senate is the only thing standing between the Democrat wet dream of one party rule and a check on "The Squad" types of legislation.

I think there were a lot of cult members who won't show up if Trump isn't on the ballot.  I doubt they are super concerned about the interplay of this "boring stuff."

Conversely, I doubt many Democrats were voting for Biden.  Hopefully they still show up as well without Trump on the ballot.

I think if Democrats can move the race to being a citizen referendum on specific policies versus just name calling about socialism, that bodes in their favor.  They need to get out a policy that motivates black people and set up McConnell as the impediment to that policy and shame old south white people for voting for the Grim Reaper.

You make it sound like Trump won't be aggressively campaigning down in Georgia for these 2 seats....

I highly doubt that.

He'll be down there.

Maybe. I don’t think Trump cares about Congressional Republicans as much as Trump cares about himself

I highly doubt he will. He may go down there a few times to whine about the election though.

And why do you think Trump campaigning in Georgia for these 2 Senators would not be him self-promoting?
